I've been watching you for 7 years. You finally tried the ultralight gear! I knew, if I was patient, the day would come! Soo happy for you Mr. Dave. The older I get, the lighter my pack gets. When it is that light, we can keep it with us all the time. My edc bag has everything needed for a comfortable overnight anywhere. Thanks for sharing your gear progression.

As an ultralight hiker I'd like to make a couple comments. 1) If you keep an electronics bag you pull it into you bag/quilt to keep the batteries from draining. 2) Put your phone on "Airplane Mode" when you can. The GPS will stay active for maps and all other apps are essentially killed. Your battery will last infinitely longer. 3) Leave a small gap at the edge of your tarp for draft unless it's pouring rain sideways. DCF will consensate just like plastic otherwise. 4) For Thermarest style valves a pack liner can be used as a Schnozle Bag by taking a SmartWater Bottle Sport Cap, pushing out the blue nipple, add a hose washer after you cut the bottle threads off of the bottle. Sandwich the pack liner over the male threads, the add the hose washer on top of the liner, after which you screw on the Sport Cap. Cut the trapped packliner following the hosewasher circumference. 5) There's a principle in physics. If you blow into a large area the central air being forced will pull tge surrounding air with it. Basically a quick, breath into a wide open Schnozle bag will fill it up 2-3 Xs faster than just blowing air into it. Just hold your face back from the wide opening several inches and blow. It's counter intuitive but it does work. You can fill that sleeping pad in 1/2 the time.

Great to show the setup and tear down of this equipment in detail, it really helps to see what it's like to live with it in the woods. I've really been enjoying this series, I think I might make a similar kit "in the shadow of Canterbury".

I own and use that stove.....are there better ones, yeah. But this one is 1 oz. and costs about $12. As long as you realize that it's a boiler and if you try to do anything else with it you'll be eating scorched whatever......it's a winner! I love mine. I have others that get used for actually cooking things. When going lite, I plan my meals according to the cook system...instant oatmel, precooked bacon, Those Idahoan potatoes come in some pre-seasoned flavors that are outstanding You can manage a rice side with that stove head if you pay attention but i find that minute rice with my own seasoning is easier. Use a ziplock FREEZER bag , it will stand up to the scolding water.

I don't normally comment on videos, however I appreciate this series you're doing. I enjoy both backpacking and bushcraft and had two complete different setups to do both. I am not a weight weenie but if you've hiked more than 15 miles in a day with a heavy pack you soon realize it's best to shave weight where and when you can. It never occurred to me that I could blend my two favorite outdoor activities together. Love this series Dave!

I really like this series, Dave. I enjoyed your Longhunter series and the old style and heavy-duty gear, but the way you're approaching the ultralight gear is an interesting evolution. It's really nice seeing you still wanting to learn! It's a great lesson for your students and fans that learning never ends. What size water bottle did you use and what bottle holder were you using? Never seen one attach to the pack straps. Thanks

This is a phenomenal series, while I have a deep respect and need to learn the traditional ways and keep it as something to fall back on, I choose modern equipment any chance I get. In my opinion it’s the best way to “smooth it” when I’m in the woods by choice. I liked seeing how it all packed up at the end and really look forward to the videos that will go into detail on some of the stuff you showed.

This video is only a testing phase video for the Ultralight camp set up I am going with in the series, I have tested this prior last weekend a 19 degrees it was only around freezing last night. However the kit for this was discussed I believe in Part 3 and more follow up will come on individual micro kits like cooking etc in videos to come. Really did'nt need to film this I guess just thought it would be good to show the overnight and some of the kit like the air mattress a bit closer up as well as speak to the Titanium I am working on. Thank for watching-

With those light weight tarps, I've never folded or rolled them. Always just crammed em which ever way into the stuff sack. It prolongs the life of them so your not getting wear points from repeatedly being folded in the same spot. Really liking this setup though.

Dave, I think it’s great that you’re trying the ultra light weight camping techniques. Three things. The long handled spoon Is my favorite and I use it all the time. You’ll like how the shiny spoon end feels in the mouth. Second, You’ve always said that getting a great neighbor sleep is key to enjoying the outdoors, using a nice thick pad a pillow only will help that. It’s 8 hours or the day. Lastly, you’re seeing that having a light pack doesn’t effect the comfort of the overnight or the hike. Keep the videos coming. Skillet

Hi Dave! I'm a new subscriber. But I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your work on Dual Survival. You were my favorite of ALL the episodes. Not to take away what others have accomplished. But you stood out by far on so many levels. I became interested in Bushcraft and Emergency Preparedness thanks to you. I live in Philly and would love to meet you someday. I am interested in learning more about your survival school. Wish I could spend a night or two camping with you. It would truly be an honor. I have always loved the outdoors. As a teen my friends and I would go camping in the Poconos. In high school I did a course in West Virginia. It was a 30 day stress challenge course called " Project Alive". We went mountain climbing on Seneca Rocks, explored two different caves, did a solo of 3 days by myself, hiked 15-20 miles per day with about 40-50 pounds in our back packs and drank water from the springs we found along the way. Best time I ever had. I didn't want to go home. Good luck and best wishes with all your endeavors. Bob. 🕊️🙏👍♥️🇺🇸🦅 PS: Ever get the skunk smell out of your hat ? 🤮🤣 Have a wonderful Thanksgiving 🦃and Christmas 🎅🤶🎄☃️❄️♥️

One of the best "gear dumps" that I've seen. One of the biggest tricks is getting it all IN the pack, not taking it out. It's comforting to see that even the pro's have to cram with enthusiasm to get it all in. Also, I'm really interested in the cuban fiber (dyneema?) stuff sacks / dry bags. Would love to learn more about them. One of them might be a useful introduction to CF that would fit in the budget.

Nothing can beat the speed of a backpack stove and it is incredibly small and light but for a little more volume and a couple more ounces I prefer a basic folding stick stove every time. When you factor in not bringing the fuel it saves weight in the long run and you can use it indefinitely.

Would it hold air over time though? I have equipment made out of similiar fabrics, inflatable "beach sofas" or whatever they call them. At one point we thought we could sleep on them in the woods. Woke up on the ground fozen stiff a couple of hours later. They're great but you have to top them off every couple of hours because they slowly leak. Not sure if its the low density fabric or the seal itself.

I know your income is tied to selling these products band totally understand and respect that and support it by occasionally buying something from your store. I would like to know if there’s alternatives to traditional tarps for people who would like to get a nylon or ultralight tarp but who is limited by budget or who wants to make their own from less expensive materials and I remember a time when you’d show things like that. I mean, I know it isn’t a lightweight by any means alternative, but an example would be like the time you showed how to make the oilcloth tarp from a canvas tarp from Harbor Freight and painted it with linseed oil and iron oxide and it was a very inexpensive, but time consuming process waiting for it to dry and cure and whatnot. But things like that harken back to the ingenuity of the pioneers and some of these new high tech ultralight, but ultra expensive gear tends to push some of us into the realm of needing to be a sponsored backpacker or only drawing in wealthy adventurers into the world of bushcraft.
