Brilliant documentary, those were the great ones, one thing that it neglected to mention which I think is very important in fairness to the legend that was John L Sullivan, he had actually retired undefeated, technically he was the first to achieve that but the last fight against Jim Corbett was a comeback he got pressurized into by fans who wanted to see him fight again, he was past his best, it was their mistake not really John L's but unfortunately he was the one who paid the price for it.

Wonderful awesome and great documentary this was originally aired on the HBO cable network and I remember watching this when it first played. This is one of the best documentaries of the Heavyweight division I've seen and the best ever produced in my opinion. Very nostalgic and reminiscing to watch a piece of Boxing history tracing it's roots back to the origins of this weight class which was once the crown jewel of the sport.

First time i've seen this excellent video. Thanks for sharing. Some of the older fighters looked awkward and clumsy. They wouldn't have lasted very long against Ali , Frazier or Liston. With exception of Johnson , Louis and possibly Marciano.

Marceano is awkward but more than makes up for it in pressure and power he's a pressure/Power fighter through and through if he cornered Fraizer he'd be finished. Ali could probably out point him but if rocky got him w a good hit well then it'd be up for debate.

IsiahRay • ROCKY MARCIANO wasn’t really awkward rather he wasn’t a classic fluid boxer in the but who was besides Joe Louis at Heavyweight...... no one really, Dempsey was herky-jerky as was Johnson...a lotta hitting and holding back then. Rocky because of his dimensions couldn’t fight with a classic stand up boxer style so he developed a style that allowed him to did what he wanted to do...... many call it effective awkwardness meaning the style allows you to execute your game plan and that requires athletic ability. Many of these cliches about Rocky are repeated in such documentaries however those in the know will tell you that Rocky’s style was by design. Take a guy like Ernie Shavers hard puncher with very little athletic talent therefore he only got so far. George Chuvalo another example. Point being you have to have athletic ability along with the obvious other skills to make it as GREAT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION...... can’t just be all braun......

michael hampton 100% we know that ROCKY MARCIANO’S style would have been difficult for Ali as Ali said it based on their making of the computer fight as they actually got in a ring and simulated a fight however the were enough moments where the action heated up and gave both combatants an idea as to the others capabilities. Also Joe Louis told my father on many occasions that Rocky’s style was troublesome as Rocky jammed Joe the way he did Archie Moore and all his opponents not letting joe extend his arms the way he wanted..... so we know that Rocky’s style transcended eras....

modern boxers don't know how lucky they are, so many titles and weight classes. even a half decent boxer with the right management can seem unbeatable. how do you know who the best is? if like most modern fighters they duck each other? good example being pacquiao and mayweather. back in these days you had to fight those tough fights as there was only one title bring this back!

As an old school fan of heavy weight boxing I say all the heavy weight champions deserve respect and admiration but taking all factors into consideration the two that I particularly take my hat off to were both John L Sullivan and Jack Johnson, these in my view were the two greatest boxers of all time, there's not much between them, of course it would have been impossible for them to have met in the ring but if they did, both at their best it could have gone either way......

Awesome documentary, but how dare they not point out that Schmeling was simply German at the wrong time - He was no Nazi, he was a saint that tried to save many innocent people under Nazi tyranny. Also wanted to point out that James J. Jefferies deserved his own segment, and I'm beyond sure of that - he was just as good if not better than most of these guys in his PRIME (not 6 necessarily years out of retirement, although Johnson may of stood toe-to-toe with him then too, they were both great).

He was an intellectual and a MAN of other interests who possessed boxing ability however he knew his limitations therefore he took advantage of his opportunity capitalized and got out.

@banofee999 Tyson is no doubt a modern legend. The fact that he was the youngest heavyweight champion on all time makes him so. He like perhaps only a few champions of the past evoked so much fear in his opponents many were defeated before they even stepped into the ring. His peek did not last long but in his peek who would have been a challenge to any champion in history. So you may or may not like him but give him his just due.

John L Sullivans last contest wasn't against Jim Corbett, it was against a young fighter named Jim McCormack in Grand Rapids Michigan in 1905. Sullivan won by 2nd round ko.

McCormack/McCormick was reportedly out cold for a few minutes after being kayoed. Also, he did become part of a sparring tour with Sullivan, but after this bout. Interestingly, Sullivan was on a drinking binge in the run up to meeting him, but gave up the drink days after this victory. Thank you for your reply sir.

.....JJ would have had more chance in the first ten rounds because he was the faster of the two although JL was certainly no slow coach, however, if he failed to knock out JL which would not have been easy then going into 11-15 rounds under Queensbury this would have been more JL's element, he had more stamina I reckon although I know that Johnson went many distance fights as well, it still would have been either way on points but my money would have been on John L if it went the distance.

Just a few days ago I happened on to KZbin's Ali vs Spinks fight. I watched intently (how) Spinks beat Ali. I could see clearly Rocky Marciano getting just as close to Ali as Spinks did. Without any of my doubt, Rocky would have knocked Ali out! A day after watching this fight, the news announced the death of Spinks. ~ God rest his soul.

Ali was 37 and already had Parkinson's. In the rematch Ali danced for 15 rounds and completely dominated him. Ali at 25 as fast and tall and mentally strong as he was he beats marciano in a unanimous decision easily.

Sullivan was never WORLD champion. He never beat even a good heavyweight. Most of his victims were farm hands and tavern brawlers and the rest were pygmies, usually outweighed by 40 or 50 pounds. One of the few decent real heavyweights he fought was Patsy Cardiff of Canada and that ended in a draw which local papers said should have been declared a win for Cardiff. James Corbett was the first international champion.

actually he brought nothing new to boxing at all, in fact his style was a throwback to the great infighters of yesteryear, it was developed in the 60's by Cus, Mike's trainer. and Mike studied the older generation of boxing extensively, you can see in the way he moves its similar to the likes of Dempsey, with some Ray Robinson mixed in, he was probably the most pure "boxer" traditionally in the 90's. the only thing that set him apart was his strength and intimidating physique.
