My first job in 79 were ripout and replace elevator entrances. We were supposed to do 2 every day. If the opening could not be secured by lunch, we were not allowed to start the second one. These were occupied buildings. I did that for 2 years before the company switched to new construction only. My very first day I lightly grazed a (broken) glazed tile early in the morning and it bled like crazy. I still have the scar on my wrist. 35:30. Do you ever cut 2 for odd spaces? Like 12'' + 6'' = 18". split it in half gives you 2 pieces 9'' each. The cuts don't stand out so much.

Great job as usual. That wall is a lot more solid and stable now with that heavy concrete lintel installed. It's always baffled me why houses were still being built well into the 70's with wooden lintels on the inner walls even though concrete and steel was used on the outer walls. Maybe building regs weren't so strict back then?

Cut up one of these old salvaged angle irons to about 15" sections and some 4" secctions. Drill a few holes in them. Screw the short lengths on the joists as hangers and then rest the longer sections on these, between the joists and then fix to the joist fill masonry to stop the droppers.

I always turned these little bits down but trust me the customers who ask for things like this are out there.

I’m out of the construction trade for a very long time now, but my foreman would never allow such a wide opening in a brick/block wall without needles to support it. I started to watch this, hoping to refresh my memory and learn how to do something, but this isn’t a how to video. The guys are using experience to get away with stuff you probably shouldn’t, but not explaining any of it. A diy-er copying them would end up getting a spin in a white van, or perhaps even a black one, when the bricks above the opening came down on them and their air hats failed to deflect them. So, if you want to learn how to relate to your son/father, this is for you. If you want to learn construction, it’s not.

Could have match the original mortar better, why didn’t you source some lighter sand, to archive that??? If you had done, in time it would look like it was the original build and not a modification!!!’ Tidy work though, shame about the mortar not matching!!!’ ຈل͜ຈ .
@SteveAndAlexBuild Жыл бұрын
You haven’t seen it fully dry
@Wobbly-World Жыл бұрын
Yep I did see it after it dried I wouldn’t have commented otherwise!!!’ OK I suppose, but could do better, it’s one of my pet peeves, of course you may not have a matching sand available, and the whole wall is a bit of a hotchpotch, but it was a better match than the cowboy’s that patched the hole, what with different bricks and a very dark mortar, that was no match at all.!!!’ It’s to often overlooked by less professional brick layers, and from what you say, you did at least try, keep up the good work, and always try to match the existing mortar, just makes for a better finish, if you get it right, it should be impossible to tell the new work from the original build.!!’ But you know that, so I give you 8/10 ຈل͜ຈ .

Wow these guys should embarrassed to put their name to this, in this short video there is more wrong than right the customer is obviously construction ignorant, not a hard hat in sight , the door should have been removed first as it restricts access and a temporary stud and polythene screen erected to separate the work from the kitchen , that pre stressed lintol should have a minimum seating of 150 mm and beaded on concrete pad stones or engineering brick not 7nt thermal breeze block, the acrows should have been nailed to the timber support and it stitched to the joists to prevent the acrows moving the wrongs are endless , Steve & Alex are cowboys .
