The 1911-1937 Warlord Era in China.
Dates are year.month.day. Months are represented by numbers.
Every polity is given its own colour. All Chinese polities have the name and photograph of their current leader next to their identifier. They are grouped into factions. "Southern Warlords", "Northern Warlords", and "Neutral" are not coherent groups.
The video ends with the capture of Nanjing on 13 December 1937, since I felt that this date makes the final transition from a state of warlordism in China to a state of national resistance against Japan.

Fun fact about Zhang Zuolin (the leader of Feng until the 30's) He basically controlled printing the money, and he essentially did a Germany and printed a bunch of money, making an inflation crisis. Then one day, he was out on the city, looked at the local shop's prices, got angry they were so high, had a few of the shop owners executed, and told the rest of the shops to stop being greedy.

The Long March ( 9:17 to 9:38) was the most interesting part of the video tbh. Watching the Communists go on the journey to move out from the cities and into the mountains that would eventually take the lives 93,000 out of the 100,000 soldiers was interesting to see visualized on a map. It's also kinda funny that most of the comments about it was that it looked like slitherio.

Thank you! Very, very edifying. Some thoughts (for your forecoming 'day by day' maps): those subtle colour differences aren't always discernable. Maybe add some sort of low-contrast hatching? Same for the territories being disputed, now those are done in the lighter tone of the main colour, and so also not always easily discernable from similar colours elsewhere on the map. Maybe slow the speed to 1/2 or 1/4, too? As it is, it's hard to keep track of everything happening in the frame. Finally (still more work for you XD) maybe add the briefest of explanations when something drastic happens on the map, like big chunks of territory sudenly flipping colours.

(I had no idea Zhang Zuolin controlled only a third of Manchuria for most of his career, I didn't appreciate the Nationalists were such a southern-based force and didn't appreciate they had so little presence in the north, et cetera.) This is fantastic! I can only imagine the work that went into this. If i could offer some advice, try to differ your colors more. Understandably, there are quite a few entities to color in this sort of map, but using light pastels for foreign nations (and more than red for the major players like the USSR, Japan, and UK) and then bright, vibrant, and clashing colors for the Chinese factions would have helped them stand out more. As is, it is very hard to track movements (which is probably due in part to the chaos of the era), but still, great work.

I designed the colour scheme used for another project, and I could probably have saturated or brightened them or something.

Looking back to this, the only thing that the video lacked were the zones in Manchuria that were mostly controlled by Korean anarchists AKA the Shinmin Prefecture, otherwise very good video ngl

Before 1916 most "warlords" were loyal to the central government. But they did have significant autonomy derived from their military control.

Great job for all those details on such a complex topic. But I think you could have made it more understandable : you should have used the same border color for all the warlords in the same alliance, in addition to each warlord color. On the other hand was it relevant to give a specific color to every countries around China ? I may have missed some details, but I think Tibet, Russia/soviet union and Japan would have been enough (perhaps a specific color for european colonies ?). As consequences, some colors are too similar to easily differenciate them (Zhi and Britain, or Yu and oceans for example).

You are entirely correct, although after all there are only so many colours in existence.

Hey, even thou that's somewhat inaccurate I appreciate the effort you put on this video, I'm working on a project of my own and I was wondering how did you choose the colors for the diverse warlords and governments, is this related to anything or just pure randomness ?
