Whether it's engineers creating custom electronics to keep retro gaming consoles working or fabricators recreating rare parts for iconic cars. It's remarkable how good we've become at breathing new life into objects we care about long after the original creators are able to support them. For mine the inconsistency is a feature, not a bug. Fuji pack film is like 100 USD a pop now, it’s insane, and even then there’s a lot of luck involved in getting a ‘good’ batch.

I believe in doc and supported the Kickstarter for the OneInstant. Up to now I only shot one photo and it made me feel like I took a small 20x24. It’s special, charming. I really liked the outcome. A few weeks ago I got an email for the B&W and preordered 2 boxes. I want this to succeed for a long time. Still have some FP100C in the fridge and freezer, also a few FP3000B and for my converted Polaroid roll Film camera some Fuji 4x5 color packs and a few different types of Polaroid sheet film. Integral film is good and convenient but the packfilm we could use is the best from my point of view. Looking forward to your next video, just love this channel so much.

Ben, you are doing a wonderful job with this channel! I can hear Doc talk all day. Met him in London a few years ago when he launched his book and at the time the only thing that was around was New55 and Doc didnt have a bright outlook for packfilm. I'm so glad it turned out differently since then. I'm a Johnny Come Lately with Land cameras and packfilm, but when Doc (who I totally regard as the saviour of Polaroid film in general) launched his kickstarter, I was like whatever, Im going to drop a couple hundred on 18 shots, just to support and say a massive thanks to him. I didn't have a camera at the time, but since bought a 340, a 355, and now have one of the holy grails known as the 180. Like I said to you before though, as much as I love the OneInstant film, I decided to hunt down some FP100C and FP3000B and my little stash has grown. And then one of my friends gave me a pack of the holy grail stuff! Original Polaroid pack film. I am saving it all up for when we get out of lockdown though. Keep up the great work!

Fujifilm declared that it was because "insufficient rentability" when they announced that back in 2016 (probably compared to Instax big sales...). And even if the machines no long exist, is it impossible to create new machines with today technology ? Kodak was able to bring back Ektachrome, and Fuji Acros, so nothing seems to be impossible.

Very well made video. You opened an interesting door when you said “sustainable”. By using old film stocks and old pods chemicals from 20x24 studio, I struggle to see how they are making one instant sustainable. It would be interesting to hear from Supersense about this as they don’t seem to show what they plan to do. I wonder also why they need to stick to the old camera backs and not come with a more modern solution if needed. Have they tried to run their film into an Instax camera? Curious to see the interview.

Nico, that is not what I was referring to when I said “sustainable.” I was talking about the fact that they have limited their expenditure and burden of resources like factory size and use of materials (like their cardboard holders). By doing this, they are ensuring they can be a sustainable business (that doesn’t disappear suddenly due to cost of operation). We discuss the alternative sources they are working on in next week’s episode. Per your camera question, they are not producing integral film (so wouldn’t make use of Instax) and resurrecting the use of 40 years of amazing cameras is part of the reason One Instant is reviving the Type 100 format, along with the fact they’re the last hope to do so.

Totally totally totally! This comes from a different, very fundamentally analog part of us, which we as humans want to keep alive. It is niche, sure, but those who feel strongly about it are a very tight knit group of kindred spirits indeed! As for cameras to try, I'd just pick up one at a thrift shop or antiques store, but make sure the batteries haven't corroded the interior, which is quite common.

I really really hope they can continue with a "Type 669" film going forward. It's probably the most iconic look and has a HUGE following in the expired community. I would love super high ISO instant film again be it integral, or peel apart. I haven't ever used peel apart for all the reasons discussed here sadly, but yeah, 3200 ISO black and white? I want that. I love night photography.

That high sensitivity peel stuff is simply amazing. Being able to go outside in the dead of night and take an instant photo feels like a minor miracle. Hopefully somebody brings that back in some form one day!

I just realized $10 per exposure for the film...which yeah I can see why people are not happy. Hopefully they can get more of the process automated so that it becomes more affordable. At maybe $5 per exposure I would consider trying it for a photoshoot, but nothing casual, I'll stick with my phone, digital and integral film for that.

Ben one question, as I might didn't catch it... Am I right, that One Instant has limited stock of their product as they are not producing it but reselling the old stock of Polaroid instead? So there will be the point where peel apart film will be dead for good? (ofc there is the chance that by our funds they will have money for research and dev new, their own, formula for peel aparat film).

They are constantly developing new methods to continue production of the film! The folks at a different company, New55 have already developed fresh pods for B&W, so it can be done.

J'ai eu dans les mains un Polaroid professionnel du style 380, ici fallait faire la mise au point manuelle. Lors d'un p e l e r i n a g e à Lourdes, j'ai fait le portrait de quelqu'un en noir et blanc, avec une certaine netteté et contraste,,qui m'a permis de fixer le négatif et après lavage et séchage le mettre dans une poche pour le conserver. Le film couleur était très bien aussi. Pour le noir et blanc,les i s o étaient élevés et sans aucun grain,ce qui est agréable. A quand, un film où l'on n'a pas besoin du flash pour les vues en extérieur ou en intérieur avec juste la lumière de l'endroit avec un film de beaucoup plus hautes sensibilités. et saturés pour la couleur, et par exemple faire une photo dans un endroit très peu éclairé ( scouter dans une fête foraine etc).

Hear me out - I get it's expensive given the amount of hands-on attention it takes to make this pull-film possible. My plea is that they might at least try to find a way to somehow make it possible to lower the unit cost of One Instant. You can't deny that there is a demand despite the niche nature of this format and film in general has had a huge boom over the past year. I would gladly open my wallet if the price wasn't so cost prohibitive for me individually. I can't imagine there aren't others that are in my position in a large enough number that would make working towards a more affordable pull-film more profitable. I want Supersense and One Instant to succeed and regardless of future prices, I hope they do. My only request is to not have to pay nearly the same price as the inflated FP100c. If I had a goldilocks area for what I would pay it would be less than expired FP100c and more than Instax. Also, call me crazy but there's just something nice about having at least 10 exposures to a package. Is that too much to ask for? HA! Here's hoping!

Still, the original Polaroid material ages, the chemistry deteriorates, and at some point, it will be dead. I do sincerely hope that someone will be able to sustainably manufacture a new peel-apart film in the future.

When I think of Polaroid, I think of my childhood/adolescence dream that never came true. I spent my first 8 years of life living in Soviet Union, so we didn't have access to things like Polaroid, Coca Cola or jeans. I believe it was first years after my country gained independence from Soviets and I saw a short reportage on news about a miracle camera that printed instant pictures. I was mesmerized and wanted it badly, but the reality was that at that time there was no WWW and you couldn't get it anywhere in my country. I still don't own a single Polaroid camera, but I've got other instant cameras, and every time I take an instant picture, I feel like I'm a badass teenager from Soviet Union :) OK, gonna continue watching this video now :)

I find it strange that Florian Kaps left Polaroid (still a shareholder) to save pack film. Why couldn't he have done this with Polaroid?

The company had no access to the manufacturing capabilities to do so, and packfilm had yet to be discontinued during Doc's time at Impossible. Once it had been, he immediately went to Japan to try and deal with Fuji, which failed, but he ended up launching Supersense as a result.

Great Video Ben! Although, I'm sorry, this film (One Instant) is so impractical, and also wayyyy too expensive for me for the results which are (in my opinion) pretty bad (to say the least). I find it pretty annoying that they are accepting the situation as it is and keeping on talking about their handmade film instead of trying to build some type of machinery. Huge pass for me. Would not support a business that accepting this absurd pricing without making any promises to their customers to lower the price (by building a machinery) and making the results better.

It's rightfully expensive. Producing anything in Vienna is expensive as hell, employees get paid well and renting a place alone is hella expensive. I'm glad they are trying, they don't have to. They're not a huge company like fuji and don't have as much access to chemicals. They're working on it and trying to improve. Impossible film was not as good as polaroid is now.

I have to agree.....I’m sorry but it really is a dead format. I have the upmost respect for Doc - he got Impossible going....and it has improved. BUT...this is just really buying dead time....all of the chems and material are just OLD polaroid stock that was made in 2008....they have made NOTHiNG....they have just origami the units together by hand from old materials from 2008. There is NO information about making the materials or chems again- NOTHING. Sorry but it is one last ditch swan song man.... Unless Fuji pulls out a miracle and remakes their packfilm.....then it is just a fantasy. Sorry dude....but I usually agree with most of your videos....but I’m betting against Doc....and he will not make a real packfilm with useable neg like Fuji....it will never happen PERIOD

How much more time can you pull that off? What are the plans for the future? How much more are we going to hear about the "LeGeNDaRy P7" that's no one gives a f*** about? One Instant is SO DISAPPOINTING by not making any announcements about working on machinery which will make this cheaper, buying new materials, and more. It looks NOTHING like Impossible's first days. They just keep on talking about their "handmade-cardboard-light-sensitive-film" which produces pretty awful images for 10 euros a shot(!!!!!) and not offering solutions or plans for the future. Sorry, this is just ludicrous, they don't deserve my money unless they get their s*** together and start acting like a business that actually wants to be relevant for the next 12 months.

@@InAnInstant yes I’m aware of new55..... are you referring to yet another Kickstarter that raised bucket loads of money ($400K usd) then took years to develop and then only delivered mediocre results...then was highly overpriced.....and then we keep getting rumours about new55 being no longer...but wait they are back...then they are gone...but then?? That new 55?? Seriously though I see where you are going - maybe one instant can use their chem and materials... maybe.... but the cost again....and also the lack of results.... Look I admire anyone for giving it a go....but it is a dead format unless some serious company like say....Fujifilm....decided to do it. I’m sick of experimental results that WE have to pay for.... you know the Land story.... he came up with an amazing idea and developed it over decades.....he DELIVERED amazing films and results....he didn’t go to Kickstarter and ask us to pay. The business “ people” of today want to spend others money and profit. To them I say F#$2 off...pay for it yourself and give us a real finished product then we will buy. Sorry....I know these comments will upset people here. I love packfilm...and would buy it if it was at least as good as what we had. I don’t expect cheaper or better....but at least EQUAL in results and in quantity per pack. The only real future for instant film - is camera companies to build some decent quality cameras for what films we actually have and actually work - instax and Polaroid originals
