This is how a response video is done properly. No emotional backlash or victimisation. Facts and transparency. We should all still take every information online with a grain of salt, but I can comfortably watch your content again after this video. Thank you. Edit: Slight change of mind. Actually, they often use Bill Gates-funded sources and studies to tell the audience Bill Gates's position on different problems. For example, they dismiss completely the academic battle between the degrowth concept and the "green growth" concept and tell the audience that "green growth" is the only viable solution.

This youtuber in question also attacked kurzgesagt's use of "ourworldindata" (a point I don't agree with so I didn't really care about their criticism here). Kurzgesagt was transparent in this video about funding and editorial direction, and I am satisfied with their explanation.

@@yaseen157 thanks for the explanation. I work shift work so barely read comments on videos I "watch" (mostly just listen), but the title peaked my interest and seen people mention controversy of some kind. @@yaseen157 it's eerie going through the comment section of that video. It's full of disillusioned people that are all disappointed with Kurzgesagt without much critical thinking. But half the video is pretty much just badmouthing billgates's enterprises so it kinda lost its plot for me half way through.
@gavinwilson5324 Жыл бұрын
@@yaseen157 Kurzgesagt has always said their sponsors have no editorial influence, and the exposé acknowledges that. The real source of the controversy lies in the indirect influence sponsors have. If the the channel wants sponsorships from these institutions in the future, they have to be careful what they say in their videos, and there are a few instances where this can be seen, like how the video on "neglected tropical diseases" implicitly painted the pharmaceutical industry's response as an act of good will instead of a way to expand their influence and profits. Also, the exposé noted that Kurzgesagt has a tendency to neglect to explain who their institutional sponsors are, and often only mention the sponsorship at the very last second of the video, when most viewers will have already clicked off. Even in this response, they kind of brushed past the issue, and failed to address these particular aspects altogether. I can only hope they try to do better in the future, but there's still reason to be skeptical of them.

@@jeronimas7148 There's no one size fits all answer. Kurzgesagt goes with practical possibilities with the intent to make one think. They don't provide "answers" to anything. If you think degrowth is "the" answer, I have a bridge to an ivory tower to sell you. Kurzgesagt is known to encourage degrowth even if they don't think it an viable answer to the problem. Because.. human nature wants growth. In my heart I want degrowth, but my brain says "good luck, focus on reasonable goals". But that doesn't mean I don't believe in degrowth. Just means that my personal focus is on other things that I reason to be more practical. I'll leave degrowth to others with more inspiration. I still don't agree with them, but I hope they do well.

Then you haven't seen that much KZbin. Linus specially during the WAN Show, evey now and then speaks about their process and gives some numbers, without a video dedicated to it, just as part of the regular content, and that is one of the biggest channel groups of the platform. Wintergatan does the same, and the rest they might also drop a "channel update" kind of video. It's not out of character for personality driven channels to show the inner workings, and yeah, talk numbers too.

What a welcome change of pace 😂 🥳🥳🎉 So yeah, if you eeda cool channel to watch with loads of technical coverage and stuff I can highly recommend him. @@thomasmcgrath8568 "Most of it was about their founder and their success story"? Only 2 minutes of this covered that which is hardly "mostly". By minute 4, they already talked about where their revenues came from. They said how their in-depth process for research is in a link in the description. The BG stuff, they said that the topics they use funded by BG were topics THEY---Kurzgesagt, not BG---suggested. If BG had an influence, it's most likely more on approving these topics, not providing them. They even mention that it is only after the video was made when they tell the sponsor. This whole comment of yours made me question if you actually watched and *listened* to the video or if you did and just let your worry and paranoia take over. Paranoia about information is well and all but it's also not well and all. As a viewer, it's in your discretion to fact check information you consume. Also, that "explain why kurzgesagt isn't influenced by grants" is the same as "explain how it is" because you basically cannot prove either of them. What you think is "proof" is speculation. It's like saying you giving them donations means you have influence over their content. Donation is still funding after all. Being skeptical is fine, but running assumptions (saying "who says they aren't", "what if", "maybe", "i don't trust what they said") as proof isn't good either. That's how conspiracy theories start and actually muddles up facts.

the pessimistic view is a political interest, people want you to believe things are all doomed and it's all someone's fault so that they can inflame you and therefore control you instead of letting people actually solve the problems, they are interested in letting the problem get worst so that they can gain from it. The opportunistic view shouldn't be considered naïve; we've worked together to stop CFC before, we can work together again and are working together again to stop CO2. There has already been a massive transformation in our industries such as with the rapid adoption of electronic vehicles and with nuclear and renewable energy. Also, there has already been a decoupling of carbon emissions and growth; we've seen from the data from the past couple of years with carbon emissions lowering AND with GDP rising. So don't believe the climate doomers or degrowthers, they're not interested in solutions, they only want things to be done their way

I appreciate the optimism and I too believe Kurzgesagt are well intentioned, unfortunately they are not doing a good job. They should stop upholding capitalism and economic growth over the climate, what you perceive as optimism is them saying "yes 3 degrees will be devastating but we will endure". I would too like to convince myself that Kurzgesagt just doesn't know the consequences of 3 degrees like: destroying poorer countries, bringing mass migration to the western core which will lead to the rise of social fascism and most likely genocide. I unfortunately can't convince myself that they aren't actively ignoring these points. Is "humanity will endure" really an optimistic argument? They are liberal capitalists, they are a German company, they uphold the systems that served them so well which I understand, I just wish they took the extra step to acknowledge how capitalism brought this to us, and upholding it won't fix the problem, it's actively delaying it

Everytime you guys publish a new video, I pay my daughter (10 yo) 5€ to make me a resume in english (non native). She thinks she is ripping me. We love the content and the format. Not enough good words to thank you. Keep up the good work. Thank you very much.

This is such an awesome technique to get kids in the habit of consuming scientific content on the internet! But I assume you still watch these Kurzgesagt videos, just not with your daughter, or else you would miss the awesome animations and you wouldn't know if your daughter misunderstood something

Kurzgesagt, I don't agree with everything you say. Or your sponsors, but your core vision has sparked my curiosity and makes me excited every time you post a new video.

Started watching in 6th grade and now I’m nearly out of Highschool and I still love learning about all of the various topics from this absolute gem of a channel, from the bottom of my heart thank you Kurzgesagt for teaching and entertaining me for all of those years.
