I watched this movie in class and a lot of people teared up. A guy beside me was starting to cry it was cute:) and then Layton pointed it out in a joking way and he’s like shut up lol

While I prefer the 1968 film, this was undeniably beautiful. We finished watching this version in my reading class today, and from the scene of Algernon's death to the very end, I had to think of everything I possibly could to keep from sobbing. Flowers For Algernon has left a permanent weight on my heart.

I read the original story in school at some point, and I remember in 9th grade or so, my English teacher told everyone that there was going to be a new adaption of it on TV (back when TV movies were common, and some were actually good). So I watched and recorded it on VHS on two VCRs and gave her a copy. I enjoyed it, but didn't quite "get" the impact of it at the time. Then I started pulling out old VHS tapes to convert to digital and came across it yesterday. Glad I did.

Well, I've seen both versions, and I enjoyed this one much more. Neither is that faithful to the original, but I think the important themes and heart from the book were portrayed well here. I mean, the author himself praised this version.

I've mentioned this already, but the movie is now available on DVD at most online stores, Amazon being one of them. It's really cheap, too, so you have no excuse not to buy it. The DVD quality's much better than anything you can find online!

I've commented here a few times already that the DVD is available - legitimately. Just go to Amazon or any other online store and type in "Flowers for Algernon DVD." I just did and it shows as $6.99, the same price as when I bought my copy almost two years ago.

Check your inbox. In my opinion this CBS version is much better than "Charly." The acting is incredible, and so is the story (I liked the changes they made from the book). Don't worry though, it's not THAT different.

What happens to him underscores the truth of that old saying about being careful what you wish for. It is ironic that the operation that was successful in making him a smarter person, at least for a little while, also made him incapable of happiness by transforming him into someone who became resentful, self-centered and contemptuous of others. We should take to heart the simple but powerful message to be content with what we have if we wish to be happy. Sorry if my language offended you.

The other posters have exaggerated it a little. The scene was actually very tasteful and romantic. If you go to Daniel Keys' website, there's an interview where he praises the filmmakers for their portrayal of Charlie and Alice's relationship. Oh, and, uh, they don't show anything.
