Inboard's M1 electric skateboard is finally shipping out to Kickstarter backers, and it's really good. Subscribe: goo.gl/G5RXGs
The $1,399 price tag is steep. But it has a sleek design, a swappable battery, and a top speed of 24 miles per hour, making the M1 a good alternative to Boosted's top-end model.

With brushless motors you can also kick when you're out of juice! Pretty important point as your cant do that on boosted!

I assume you mean because of the in-wheel motor not brushless motor as every decent consumer board uses brushless outrunners. But sadly because of the weight of the motors being inside the wheel, kick pushing is about equal to the Boosted. I have tried the Boosted, Inboard and Evolve boards and kick pushing is equal on the Boosted and Inboard while slightly worse on the Evolve due to the tighter belts. The only advantage you get over M1 is that it coasts after reaching speed. Kick-pushing is not a benefit exclusive to the M1. I chose the Evolve Carbon GT as my final choice. It's significantly more expensive but its power and range make it worth it IMHO.

They're all brushless. Its not only that the boards are heavy, but also that the motor drags a bit all the time. That's because you can't turn off the permanent magnets in the motors and they interact with the iron motor core, wasting energy. But since these motors have a 1:1 gear ratio (direct drive), they won't drag as much as belt drive motors which have say, a 1:3 ratio which means the motor spins 3 times faster than the wheels. The disadvantage is of course, low torque. These things probably can't go up very steep hills, or not for long without overheating.

Good assessment. I got the Evolve GT in June of last year, was one if the first to ride it. No regrets at all, but the remote is touchy and with that instant 3000 Watt power you can fly off it if your not careful. I prefer boosted remote for comfort. But what can you do...Anyways, it's incredible to ride the boardwalk in Santa Monica.

well, u can still use a bike. Iam living in the alps and if you are fit enough that shouldnt be a problem. Electric bike and lngborads are great, but as long as you are fit it should be enough to own a bike for short or mid range trips.

The swappable battery is a game changer. You could throw an extra one of those in your backpack and instantly be able to double your mileage. That alone makes it better than the boosted board in my opinion.

Great review! The $240 batteries should be $99, since materials are probably around $50 to make them, but it should be easy enough for 3rd party makers to make super cheap batteries to plug in. Thanks for making this! Awesome photography.

yeah, how many 18650 cells are in a pack? 10? that's only like 10*5$?
@andeez_nutz
@andeez_nutz 7 жыл бұрын
Disagree on that one. of course they're getting the 18650 cells for less than you and I would have to pay (since they buy in bulk), but even then you end up paying quite a lot. Let's go by price without the bulk savings. The battery looks like it has a 10s2p setup. meaning 10 cells in series, and 2 cells parallel. Assuming that they're using something like the LG HE2 cells (since they will need to be able to handle high current draw to not explode), you're looking at $5-6 a cell. That times twenty equals $100 alone. Add in a battery management system to prevent overcharging and you're looking at an additional $40. The case itself is not free either, so add about $10 (?) to that as well. Price for the thing would come close to about $150 in total. Now add import taxes for them and the fact that they wanna make some profits off that as well. Oh and however much you have to pay the people that assemble the whole thing. You see how that's more than $50 those battery packs cost to produce, right? Now, realistically speaking they probably get the cells for around $3 each. Can't imagine the BMS to cost more than $25 each and the case itself won't be too expensive either if you break it down to total price vs. total number of units. They're certainly making their fair share of profit but it's not like they charge you five times of what it costs. I've build some electric longboards myself and you'd be surprised how quick you reach a price range of over $1k without even going for the creme de la creme parts.
@Beakerzor
@Beakerzor 7 жыл бұрын
$120 wholesale + assembly and labor, that's more fair; good to know it's not just 10 cells

I bought a boosted as well but I'm definitely getting an M1, I've had my board for 1 week and the new V2 Boosted has plastic motor coverings compared to the metal ones on the V1 model and I am already wearing down those coverings making the belts more exposed... that sucks. I like the M1 because there's way less likely of a chance to damage your motors being that they're inside the wheel. If you need a discount I can score you $100 off and they have super flexible financing offers. Enjoy your board :D

What's real speed? What's real range? How low is it? I have boosted v1 dual+ I like its speed/torque but the range really SUCKS. I will have maybe 10 minutes of fun riding time. It goes about 3 miles when you go full throttle. It also scratches the motor case and battery cover when I go over rough roads. I was thinking about getting evolve gt series because it's like riding suv with those all terrain wheels. (plus better range)

Ive been using this for about a week now and I was worried at first that I would feel like it would feel underpowered but i have to say this thing moves, It doesn't have the off-the-line punch of a boosted board but it has more of a smooth build up snowboarding feel to it. If you like cruising on a snowboard you'll love it....If you're not ready for the boost it'll kick you off when the throttle kicks in. Great board , I can't wait to see what they have in store

I love the inboard M1. But it's funny how many different Max speeds that are according to these videos. 20 or 22 and 24. I just bought mine in the boxes 22. But everybody who owns this board knows that's BS it gets like 18 and 19 Max. I can't believe they had the audacity at one point in time to save it I got 24 mile an hour. Don't get me wrong other than lying about the top speed this board is now perfect and just about every other way. If they could make a better version of this board or faster version, or make this version faster it would be perfect!!!

I'm not quite sure that's true. I have one myself and it climbs hills like a beast without the extra 25%. It also has a higher top speed. It's not the board, it's the software-based acceleration curve that makes it start slow.
@VT4

Bluffamuchuck I rode an inboard for 2+ weeks and a BB dual plus before pulling the trigger with the BB, even to this day that friend that lent me his inboard can never keep up. We (me +3 other BB riders) always find ourselves waiting for him every 5~ blocks. Also the actual reason (wasn't going to bother explaining it because it probably won't mean much to you*, no offense) that the inboard has such a horrible acceleration is because: it doesn't have a gear ratio for its low end torque (due to it having a hub motor.) Also the inboard top speed is 24mph And my BB's top speed is 25mph thanks to a super simple belt and wheel change (it cost me like 3-5% acceleration/braking torque but worth it,) now I have a much faster acceleration, braking and 1mph faster board then an inboard (:

Why would you get this or a boosted board over a Zboard 2? The Zboard 2 is cheaper, has no problems climbing steep hills, has over double the range, only goes 4 mph slower, and has a control mechanism that is FAR SUPERIOR, as you don't need a handheld controller.

Mac Arows Bro get a Zboard. I own a Zboard SF special and used to ride it around 12 miles a day to, around, and from my university; I've legit never had any problems falling off of it due to the wheels being too small. I've ridden over in use water hoses at over 20 mph when the campus groundskeepers are watering plants with no problem, whereas my buddy accidentally did the same on his long board and full on Super-Manned across the pavement.

Controller and receiver $100? That's not true. More like 30-40. They buy them in bulk. Also the ESC is probably a dual ESC (but since I haven't seen the inside of that, I can't say for sure). Just doesn't make sense to use two separate ones when you can have someone build a dual one. Why would the batteries be 2x$40? it's only one battery pack, not two. And the price of the battery pack alone most likely is closer to $100 ESC is more expensive than $30 though. Have you ever seen how much a VESC costs, in comparison to that?
