Oh bless Ali! She is an incredible dog Mum, and animal rescuer! To hear both her and Scott talk so openly, and candidly, about the harm that excessive selective breeding has done to so many dogs, means so much and will hopefully reach a wide audience. We urgently need to go back and reassess all breed standards, we should be breeding for health, and for quality of life, not for Victorian aesthetic preferences. We know very well just how compromised the extreme brachycephalic breeds are, we have the veterinary literature, it is time we loved dogs as much as they love us, and put their needs first. I hope Ali and Wilbur's journey here will encourage more people to lobby their regional kennel clubs to move to health-based breed standards!!

I think I've seen your comments before, you are obviously someone that really wants the best for dogs. I really hope you are involved with breeding or looking after dogs in some way, I think those dogs would be very lucky. The world needs more people like you.

It doesn't help that the American Kennel Club announced that the most popular breed of dog is the French Bulldog. Now more people are going to want one. There will be more backyard breeding creating more dogs with severe health problems. Sorry if this doesn't make sense. I have Sciatica and the pain meds are making me loopy. Lol

It’s so enjoyable watching all of the Bondi Vets, been a subscriber for many, many years. Dr Scott, I’ve been with you through your friends’s heartbreaking losses, and to see you repair the Frankenstein breeding done to her newest friend. Truly outstanding craftsmanship, you’re a vet who takes so much pride in your work because of your love of the animals. And let’s not forget about Archie. What a sweetie, already shed tears for this cutie, hoping the test come back negative. Please keep sharing and I’ll keep watching, loads of love from Texas!!!❤❤❤

Perhaps if Bondi Vets talked about how much the various procedures cost and the added costs and risks involved with Brachy dogs and cats it would discourage people from getting those breeds in favor of animals that are bred for health rather than looks.

I know that panicked look on a dogs face. My little girl had a heart defect and when her heart started to fail and she would collapse, the panic on her face is obvious and unforgettable. She left us 4 years ago at 14 and a half. Not bad for a dog the vet estimated might just make it to two.

I hope the discussion of selective breeding does reach a wider audience. In many cases, it's not the breed standard, it's the too-liberal interpretation of it. A FAD. Judges, for whatever reason, start pinning different looks, movements, etc, & many breeders start scrambling to breed for this "preferred " look so their dogs can win & they can sell puppies. (Maybe the judges that go off the rails like this should be reprimanded.....). And it's not just in dogs that this "fad insanity" happens. I've had Arabian horses for many years, & in the 80s & 90s, the fad was a horse that looked like a sculpture from heaven standing posed in a halter class. They basically couldn't move bc their structure got in the way of breathing, impulsion, athletic movement. The Registry responded by making a rule that any horse showing at the national level of halter had to have performance credentials before they were allowed in the class. This went a long way toward producing athletic horses that move & be functional. Hopefully the dog world will respond in a similar positive manner...

So sad with the way these dogs have been bred to get their faces so smushed in where they have great difficulty breathing and the sound of the snoring of these bully breeds when they sleep. ( you can’t elbow them at night as you do your hubby to get off his back when he is sawing logs. Also with these breeds their eyelids come down over their eyes so that it impairs their vision. Think these breeds are what they refer to as cephalic dogs. The German Shepherd is another breed that has been diddled with so the joints of their hind legs almost touch the ground. It’s sad to see what is being done to some breeds. I have to say I am all for the “no docking, no cropping or declawing of kittens and cats” as for the rest, the CKC and AKC has breed standards. Breeder should be aiming to meet the Breed Standards) for their dog. I was a Community Reg Nurse for years and I had a client out in the county and was reviewing her blood pressure and her meds with her and I heard this chorus of ungodly snoring, I had to as her if her husband or partner has ever had his O2 Sats done during the night - has his family MD ordered him to be assessed for sleep apnea. Then she tells me she doesn’t have a spouse. She takes me into a spare bedroom where she had a puppy pile of Pugs sleeping and snoring. WoW which leads me to another question, has there ever been research done on snoring and sleep apnea done on these breeds. Lack of O2 affects brain function ….

People have this problem too, often referred to as a deviated septum, which restrains or even cuts off breathing entirely. This can cause clinical depression if unattended. If you know somebody who suffers from depression and takes drugs for it; check out their breathing and suggest they have it fixed if they can't say "M" or "N" and have less the normal inclination to exercise. You could change their lives. Your brain needs a certain kind of circulation and breathing through the nose stimulates it. This is why exercise is such good depression medicine. We all have sorrows and setbacks; Depression is something else, it's the inability to deal with them. It's all a matter of attitude, mental exhaustion, and breathing through the nose plays a chief role in all this. Give it a try.
