Some also suggest that Cobb's wedding ring wasn't his totem but rather a representation of his guilt over what he felt was his role wife's death. Hence why he only has it on in the dream.

Yes. It’s as if Nolan has a degree in psychotherapy. There is so much processing of guilt and loss written into the construct of the characters. This movie gets better and better the more you watch it. One of my all time favorites.

Ariadne is the person that gives the hero Theseus a method to get out of the labyrinth (using a spool of thread to backtrack your way to the entrance). Figuratively, that's her role in the job. The first thing Cobb asks her is to design a maze.

To add to that, the spool of thread Ariadne’s gives in the myth is red. And you’ll notice, in the movie, red is constantly a part of Ariadne’s wardrobe.

"The first thing Cobb asks her is to design a maze" That would make her Daedalus, not Ariadne. Right myth, wrong character. All Ariadne does in the myth is as you see give Theseus the thread to leave a trail that can lead him back to the entrance of the labyrinth. Daedalus was the genius that actually created the labyrinth itself. You could say that Michael Caine's character was Daedalus was equivalent to Daedalus as the one to teach Cobb how to teach mazes and how to navigate the mid, and as his son in the film Cobb becomes Ikaros (Icarus in Latin) who flew too close to the sun.

You’re absolutely right about the final scene. It’s actually something took me multiple watches to realise. The important thing isn’t whether or not the top is going to stop spinning. The important thing is that Cobb walked away to be with his kids before he could find out. He doesn’t care whether he’s dreaming or not. He’s just content.

Yep correct, and Nolan said this to Gamerant/HappySad podcast: The Oppenheimer director revealed that everyone is missing the bigger picture. ...According to Nolan, Cobb doesn't care if he's still in a dream. "I went through a phase where I was asked that a lot," Nolan continues. "I think it was Emma Thomas who pointed out the correct answer, Which is Leo's character... the point of the shot is the character doesn't care at that point. It's not a question I comfortably answer." Nolan added, "There is a nihilistic view of that ending, right? But also, he's moved on and is with his kids"

My interpretation of the ending is this: By focusing on the totem in the last shot and cutting to black as soon as it wobbles, Christopher Nolan is performing INCEPTION on the audience by planting an idea that it isn’t real, even though it is real. Brilliant writing!

Actually, when he wrote it, it was reality whenever Michael Caine was in the scene. But later on he waffled and decided he liked the idea that it’s not definitive one c way or the other. Kind of like the end of [spoiler below] Total Recall. You never know if the events are real or false implanted memories.

It's amazing that you are able to feel all the emotions while simultaneously also catching so many small intricacies of the plot. It took me multiple viewings to realize that Cobb wears his wedding ring in the dreams. And then some more viewings to understand that he would stop wearing the ring in his dreams after letting go of his wife. And then a couple more viewings to finally come to the conclusion that the entire point of the last scene was that Cobb turns away from the spinning top (instead of waiting for it to topple with a gun in his hand) because he accepts that he is where he wants to be. He embraces reality instead of chasing it. Spotting all that in your first viewing is incredible! Good job!

Like many people already said, the wedding ring is an absurdly astute observation for a 1st time watch. Back in the day when it came out, people were catching it on their 3rd watch and it soon became "the hack" everyone was trying to tell their friends about and appear real smart. Great reaction Teegan, keep it going! Couple of fun facts others maybe haven't mentioned yet: - during the main part of the hallway fight they didn't have wires, the actors had to time their movements perfectly while the entire set rotated, otherwise they would fall from the "ceiling" to the "floor" - the water exploding in from the sides at the beginning of the dream was all real, they used cannons - Nolan worked on the script for 10 years, on and off - Nolan got the initial idea when during college he had to wake up earlier to get a free breakfast and then went back to his dorm to sleep again, and started experiencing lucid dreaming and becoming self-aware; Inception was his idea of a Bond-ish movie with that concept at its core - Nolan wrote the part of Cobb with Leo in mind I could go on but I won't, kudos if you got to this part 😆👋🏻

I think they weren't on wires in the first fight scene in the hallway. It was in a jig that rotated and rolled while the actors were free to move. I think they only got onto wires when Yusuf's van was in free fall and they needed to float

I hope you read this because I feel strongly about this. I have been following you for a while now and specifically since this year, I've noticed your growth. I'm also following your bloodborne play-through with great enjoyment in which you are really making leaps in your self-confidence and making me jealous because you are waaaaay better at the game than I am. So imagine my disappointment when you enter this movie putting yourself down and saying you maybe 'will never fully grasp it'. HOWEVER: imagine my utter glee when you end up to be one of the very very few people (not including myself) that get the thing with the wedding-ring from THE VERY FIRST WATCH!!! All the while understanding the emotional gravity of this movie and realising what is important (for example about Cobb choosing to accept HIS reality). So I just wanted to say: you are an amazing human being! I love your reactions - and your gameplay - every time! I admire that you are so in touch with yourself and not afraid to ruin your make-up (as if we care about a little smushed mascara) reacting to truly profound and emotional events in these stories, especially when they hit close to home. It’s amazing you picked up on Cobb’s wedding ring on your first watch, that it’s on when he’s supposedly in the real world, how he’s not wearing it when he’s dreaming. Cobb’s wedding ring is the audience’s totem. If you pause the movie when Cobb hands his passport to the man in customs, you can see Cobb is wearing his ring. However, even if the top falls in the final scene, it’s still possible Cobb is dreaming because he told Ariadne how Mal’s totem works so any architect could design a dream where a projected top falls. So Cobb’s wedding ring totem could be a misdirection by Nolan. Bottom line is that, as you pointed out, Cobb doesn’t care to check whether the top falls or not. He’s happy to see his children’s faces and has let go of the guilt over what he did to Mal. Yet, don’t forget the last line of the film by Cobb’s son James. He says “Look what we’ve been building…we’re building a house on a cliff.” This line likely refers to Saito’s Japanese Castle House in Limbo that was built on a cliff. So Cobb could be projecting everything, every character, and every line in the film…that it’s one giant dream from the beginning of the film to the end in Cobb’s mind to rid himself of the guilt he feels - there are many hidden clues in the film that lend to this charitable interpretation that “it’s all a dream.”

Cool think about Ariadne is that she was named after the daughter of Minos in Greek mythology. In one story, Minos actually has Ariadne take control of a labyrinth. In the movie, the labyrinth that Ariadne draws for Cobb’s test is almost identical to paintings of the ancient labyrinth.

About the ending... Saito touched the totem in limbo which defeats its purpose right before they last woke up, it is also not Cobb's totem it's Mal's. Cobb's totem is his ring which is visible in the dream but not in reality. The ring was not on him when they went to sleep on the plane and it wasn't there when they woke up in the plane. A running theory is that Cobb is actually Nolan, Cobb is the director, set designer (Ellen Page) and an actor (Tom Hardy), Mal (meaning bad in some languages) as the bad guy, Cillian Murphy's character represents the audience (us) who must have the idea planted into their heads and accept it (The last scene is believed to be an inception attempt by Nolan about Cobb (himself). @@LiteWeightReacting

They shot those corridor scenes by having corridor looking set inside spinning machine, that's why it looks like they are standing on walls, ceiling. Weightless scenes were either lines or done inside a plane descending at speed nullifying gravity pull.

Great reaction! Ugh I love this movie so much. It was the first Nolan movie I watched and led me down a Chris Nolan movie marathon lol. I ended up liking every single one of his movies and he’s my favourite director honestly. The Prestige is another one of his that’s just absolutely brilliant. A psychological thriller starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as 19th century stage magicians. Highly recommend!

You are correct: Cobb is wearing his ring in dreams, but not in reality. It's much easier to see in the airport as he's going through customs, there are a couple of shots where you can clearly see he is not wearing his ring. But the ambiguity at the end is purposeful in conveying that in the end, it didn't matter to Cobb anymore whether it was real or not: he was going to be with his kids no matter what. When this came out in theaters, I was going through a custody battle for my kids. I ultimately won custody, but at the time my access to my kids was limited, so this film really hit me hard.

Also, you rightly wondered in your reaction how the team got back to the plane from the “rainy city” dream level one at the end. They actually had to wait around a week in that dream layer until the timer expired on the dream machine on the plane. They rode the double kicks back to the “Rainy City” but there was no way to double kick back to reality on the plane. Had to just wait for the timer to expire which then wakes them up. If they would have killed themselves in Rainy City level, they would have dropped to Limbo. Somehow Cobb and Saito, when Saito shoots Cobb and himself in Limbo at dining table, they awake on the plane (possibly because all the other dream layers have all collapsed and no longer exist). Cheat code for understanding the layers: It's all about the kick - any layer added means a kick has to be planned. The kicks are timed so that riding the kick of the lower layer gives you time to ride the kick of the layer above it etc until you're back to reality. Any unplanned layers means they have to figure out a kick and time it right (because it wasn't planned) The last kick planned was the van going off the bridge, once Saito died they had to go one layer deeper to get him but make it in time before the van hit the ground (last possible kick)

This is my favorite movie OF ALL TIME. And I so, so appreciated your reaction to it. This is one of my favorite reactions to this film that I’ve seen. Your ability to pick up on the small things and your emotional connection to all the hard-hitting moments. It’s so wonderful to see it resonate with others the way it resonates with me. It is such a BEAUTIFUL movie. I actually did a persuasive essay on whether the ending was real or not for an English class in college and there’s a lot of evidence that it’s reality. 1. The biggest reason I see for this is that Cobb was always aware of his reality, even in limbo the first time. He admits to that when Mal says “you don’t believe in one reality anymore, so choose here, choose me.” He argues, “no I know what’s real because no matter how confused I get, the guilt is always there reminding me of the truth.” As much as he wants it to be true and submit to delusion, anywhere Mal can show up, cannot be reality. She is gone and it was his fault and there’s no forgetting that. I think that’s truly why he uses her totem. It’s more symbolic…when he has a moment of doubt, he spins her totem (like he did in limbo when he planted her idea) and it’s a reminder of the guilt and it grounds him. Aside from that, as many have stated, his wedding ring is always present in the dream and not in reality. Ariadne asks him “why is it so important to dream?” And he replies “in my dreams, we’re still together.” 2. The kids. Despite the real-world fact that there are two sets of kids (and one set is credited as “older James” and “older Philippa” ) and the differences in clothing, (they are very similar in color and shape but look at screenshots, it’s different clothes), there’s the point about never seeing their faces. I liken that to dreams where, say, you’re trying to fix your hair or makeup but no matter how hard you try you can’t seem to get a good look in the mirror, or your driving and can’t for some reason look up out of the windshield. His children’s faces evade him like that in the dreams, I think. His subconscious feels guilt over leaving without saying goodbye and punishes him with that barrier. So being able to see their faces at the end is more than just oh he chose to wait and look at their faces. He could literally never get a glimpse in the dreams, even if he’d wanted to. 3. Michael Caine states that Nolan told him any scene he’s in is reality. So, boom, that’s easy. 4. Cobb says “you never really know how a dream starts, do you? You just end up in the middle of it. Think about it, Ariadne, how did you get here?” But once Cobb wakes up on the plane, we see his entire journey through the airport, through customs, and then home. I think that was all done intentionally. Cobb knows how he got there to his kids and so do we. 4. Finally, we get a good clip of how the spinning totem responds in the dream. The only instance we see of its function in a dream, is when Cobb plants the idea in Mal’s safe in limbo. In a dream, the top spins straight up as if it’s standing still, on and on. It never wobbles or wavers or moves in circles. At the end when he spins it, before the cut to black, it in fact wobbles. I know people say the point is that he doesn’t care and I think that’s valid and I agree. (But I care! Lol) But I also think that’s the biggest clue that it’s reality. If that totem really was just a reminder of the guilt of what he did to Mal, he’s made his peace with it. All of that is finally in the past. He’s forgiven himself and atoned and made it home, so he has no need to look back for the reminder. He’s not suppressing the truth. He’s moving forward and letting go-not of the concept or belief in reality (because he’s sure of that now) but of Mal. Dreams and Mal are the past, reality and his children are the future. Something you might have noticed about the Nolan’s by now is that they have an obsession with time, any story that they tell time is a crucial element of the story, it’s a little rudimentary in the Batman sequels, but it is still present.

In the final final scene it's difficult to see if he has the ring, but in the prior scene he hands in his passport at the airport with his left hand and there's no ring there Good job noticing that detail as early as you did

All by yourself, you've come up with the things at the end of this film that I wish the various pedants would: 1) that Cobb not wearing his wedding ring might simply indicate that he's still dreaming but has finally let go of Mal rather than that he's awake, and 2) that it doesn't matter whether the top was going to fall or not because Cobb has decided that this will be the reality he lives with his children from here on out.

Love this movie. It's one of those that after it was over, I sat alone in the theater just in awe with thought on it. Amazing that one can think of this, then relay that thought to someone else, then to build a script for it, and then digitally recreate it all. It's mind blowing when you think about how it came to this point of us viewing this idea. WOW. Recommend a rewatch to really put the puzzle together, although you seemed to pick up on most of it. ... Have you seen "Shutter Island"? Its another one that will play against your mind. I sometimes confuse the ending of these two films with each other.

Very thrilling, a heist movie with wild science fiction ideas. Visuals, editing, music executed on such a high level. One of my favorite Nolan movies.I also recommend The Prestige, and Michael Mann's movies Heat and Collateral.

There is a much easier explanation that Nolan gave, as to whether in the finale, Dicaprio is dreaming or not: the explanation was "If Michael Caine is present it is not a dream."

I use to play with dreaming. Trying to become conscious when I was dreaming. I accidentally spend 20 years in a dream. It was hard after waking because I had forgotten everyone's name. I didn't expect to ever wake up. It took about a week to remember everything I had forgotten. But I had only been asleep for 2 minutes. I've had some amazing dreams.

You’re one of the first people I’ve seen who one, figured out the wedding ring, two, understood that the top not falling is proof that Cobb has healed. He has accepted his current reality and is no longer paranoid. Also for the turning hallway scene, Nolan actually constructed a mobile hallway and had them do their choreography while it slowly spun.

As far as I'm concerned, Nolan is hands down the best director there is right now. It's not only the quality of the stories, but especially his ability to explain very complex, multi-layered plots like this one with very simple visual inputs. He estabilishes some small details that stick in your subconscious and then uses them again throughout the movie as reminders so that you immediately realize where/when you are. It's masterful. And the build-up. The music and the drama growing along with the stakes, to explode together in the finale. I honestly wish he would make a new movie every other day.

There is another movie that reminds me a lot of Inception (personally one of my favourites) that have kind of gone under the radar, "Source Code". Its a pure gem of a movie! And has one of the most beautiful scenes ever made in a movie!

I’m not trying to do anything but let you know that there is a very old movie out there that’s been a favorite of mine ..forever…and there were times in the past I could not recall the title because it’s a forgotten 1941 movie nominated for Best Picture of 1942…RANDOM HARVEST..not really a war movie, but war had an influence..a guy is in the hospital because of it and set free because of it…Ronald Coleman and Greer Garson..who won the Academy Award that year for another movie, Mrs.Miniver…beautiful red hair, but these were black and white years..great emotional movie…

A wonderful analysis. And yes, I'm in complete agreement with you. As an older guy I was even tearing up, especially at the end when Cillian's father said he was "disappointed" that his son "had tried" (to be him) and then Cillian opening the small safe to find his pin-wheel carefully protected and preserved (to confirm its value)l, only to turn back to his father who had now passed on. And more tears by Cillian as he held his father's hand. This movie was so stock-full of multiple plots, sub-plots, and details, all filmed so well AND cut together so well that ---- it put the lie to the famous clique that ---- books are better then movies. Nope! Not in this case. This movie WAS better than any book! And the score was so dreamy and perfect for the movie. So haunting but beautiful. Sad and happy at the same time. Makes me smile because although the ending was ambiguous, I've already decided what I believe to be real.

I've watched this movie probably 75-100 times (it's in my top 10), and I had NEVER noticed the wedding ring thing in all of those viewings. Very interesting detail you instantly picked up on! I also hope you do Nolan's "Memento", it's my 3rd favorite Nolan film, and I think you'd really enjoy it. Anyway, great reaction!

This film is two stories and a meta-level argument all in one. On one level it's like a "heist" film where a team of specialists is hired to do a job. Only they are there to leave, rather than take, something. On the next level, the film is about Ariadne performing Inception on Cobb, to show him the way out of the maze of his guilt for his wife's death (as her namesake did for Theseus). She was likely hired by the Micheal Caine character. Also, the entire film argues that all movies are like shared dreams, where sometimes we end up in places without knowing how we got there, or where odd things happen that we just need to accept if we are into the narrative, and we can share these experiences with anyone who has seen the same film. Finally, here is my take, it does not matter if Cobb is awake or dreaming. If he is awake he is home with his kids. Some suggest lack of his wedding ring means he is no longer in the dream because he only has it on when he is in the dream. However, in his dreams, his ring could also be a representation of his guilt over his wife's death and his not having it on in the end could mean he has forgiven himself. If he is in Limbo, because of the way time works there, then he will still get to see his kids grow up, get married, and have a life. That dream world will become his reality and to paraphrase the old man in Mombassa, "Who are we to say otherwise?" Either way, he is "home" with his kids. For the hallway scene, they built a hallway on a gimbal so they could rotate and tilt it. Ultimately, there is no "right" answer in most films, only what each person takes from it, At least that's what I teach my students when I do film courses. Anyway, sorry for going on about this, as if you can't tell it's my favorite film.

The significance of the camera cutting before we see if the top falls isn't whether Cobb is in reality or not -- it's that Cobb walks away from the top before checking if it falls. Cobb no longer cares if he's in reality or not, as long as he's reunited with his kids.

I walked into this movie blind, no clue what I was in for, last second decision with friends. I was blown away, partly because of the total package of the film, but mainly having somebody else depict the concept of dreaming the way I had always known it, through vivid and lucid dreaming. Had to look up Nolan after, and sure enough, he's left handed. He lucid dreams and writing from experience.
