Jahrhundert!

Finally, a performance of this elusive work that makes perfect sense to me, provided by one of the greatest maestri of all time. Unbelievable tension in the musical line and forward motion, plus structural integrity and supreme musicality.

+Adam Czarnowski I uploaded an other Sibelius 7th by Mravinsky (Tokyo 77). I think it's worth hearing it as the concert all is different, and the playing perhaps even more intense.

Best performance? Worst performance? Mravinsky is clearly keeping himself from coming between the music and the listener. Not an easy thing to master. Every nuance is clearly delineated, making for a multi-dimensional edifice. Good enough for me.

Initially I thought the tempo was just right, but I was wrong. This thing is way too fast.

If the Russians are going to play Sibelius, I would dearly love to hear Gergiev conduct. What passion and intensity he could bring.
@robinmiller98653 жыл бұрын
Mravinsky was a first rate conductor whereas Gergiev is and will remain a first rate second rate conductor.

A tad curious as to what your source is here. I own this mesmerizing performance on a Olympia/Melodiya CD. Sound quality is just about the same but the applause is expertly edited out.

I would love to have witness Sibelius reaction to this! It's rather nice but is almost a deconstruction.

If Karajanus had lived long enough to conduct the 7th, I might have sounded something like this, because there's a Sibelius authenticity to Mravinsky's interpretation, don't you think?

Haha, "Karajanus". You've (unintentionally?) combined two of the best Sibelius conductors!

strange but nice performance. The most intense performance is i think Barbirolli live with helsinki. this one is a bit fragmented. And the end is too relaxed

Is that a clown on the trombone or is he just been on the vodka? I was enjoying an unusual interpretation until George Chisolm started wobbling into the middle of it.
@mikecole16333 жыл бұрын
That’s how Russian brass players did solos in those days. We Westerners simply couldn’t get used to it, except possibly the French who had a similar tradition. Perhaps the vodka might have straightened it out...

Mravinsky always exposed the raw marrow of a work. The rest sound effete.

Cannot believe some people call this the greatest version ever of this symphony. I find this a cold and lifeless version This is not Finland - this is Finland back under Russian control. Lorin Maazel (with Vienna Philharmonic) and Karajan (with Berlin - easily my favorite recording) far outshines this Mravinsky recording- both powerful, but with life, warmth and humanity- not this ice cold steel version of Russia's iron and steel conductor.

Maazel (Maazel!!!) better than... Mravinsky?!?!?
