Einfach genial!

So beautiful. What a wonderful orchestra. Such great balance in sound. Mozart would be proud to hear his Prague symphony played by the Berlin Philharmonic and Bohm. Every minute of their playing I feel authenticity and true beauty revealed.

KZbin U R my education (musical at any rate!) having first heard "other" versions here and read comments I came here! The difference is astonishing. So, my thanks to Incontraio, posters here and elsewhere for sharing their knowledge. Thanks too of course to Böhm and the B Phil. You are all simply splendid but über alles thanks to Amadeus, his genius. energy and the joy he communicates: like soaring high up in the sky.

Exquisite. Böhm knew his Mozart.
@gerardbegni28066 жыл бұрын
Perfect. Böhm takes care of rendering all the details while evidencing the overall architecture. This is very important in this majestic but delicately crafted "Prague" symphony. Note that the symphony is in three movments, which increases the impotance and the weight of the central one. This is extremely rare in the classical or even romantic symphony. No Beethoven's symphony is such.

Mozart under Böhm´s baton (esp. with VPO) is an absolute top! He had an unmistakable feeling for right tempi not only in Mozart but also in Schubert, Strauss, Brahms etc. What great Masters come from Austria - Friedrich Gulda, Wolfgang Schneiderhan (speaking of Mozart).

Bohm was so great with Mozart. Check out his opera recordings.

Böhm in Mozart later works: being fair to the melancholy that is part and parcel in them. Most conductors do not ! False image of Mozart the mature composer. Transparency and orchestral equilibrium (of instrumental groups) perfect here. Like it 's always with maestro Böhm (Bruckner Fourth e.g.) Do not forget the 'Nozze' by Böhm (and D.F. Dieskau). Same great art as here. Melancholy, shining through drama, joy and energetic frolicking. Symphony no. 38: Prague, 'Don Giovanni' revisited, opera in disguise.

Although it's not exactly "unknown," I feel that this symphony tends to be underrated because everyone always talks about the final three as his best. But I would say that the first movement of this is actually his greatest opening symphonic movement. The introduction alone is something else, with all the similarities to Don Giovanni. But then there are all sorts of interesting things going on in the Allegro, which has a lot of counterpoint in it as well. The other two movements are great too but I wouldn't pick them as standouts compared to the equivalent movements in the last three symphonies. Interestingly this is the only symphony he wrote where every movement is in sonata form, and actually it might be the ONLY symphony written that way.

I do love R. Strauss as well but you should recall that R. Strauss is a Late Romantic Composer, whereas Mozart is a composer of the classical age which means that they have a different vision of the brass section.

This is fast becoming my favorite Mozart symphony; at least one of the very few where I do not miss listening to Beethoven, as happens with the Jupiter for me. I still enjoy No. 40, at least in this conductor's hands, and No. 39 is OK, but for me still does not equal what the Prague has become for me.If you need a transition from R. Strauss back to Mozart, try his neo-classical works; the Dance Suite and Divertimento after Couperin. I also highly recommend Strauss' Oboe Concerto, perhaps the finest ever written for that instrument.Another work of Mozart where I emphatically do not miss Beethoven is the Piano Concerto in C Major, K. 467, the No. 21 (I will not repeat the subtitle it has unfortunately acquired in recent years). It is for me very similar to Beethoven's No. 1 Concerto in C Major, Op. 15. I can listen to either of these without missing the other.Schubert's Second Symphony for me falls into the same category - I love it all the way through, especially in Maestro Bohm's hands.
