Excellent, your channel has become, hands down, one of my favorites for creator content. Learning so much, thank you! I am a big fan of chapters because my goal has been to give the viewer what they want without having to scroll and search. I have a how-to based channel. I know retention is key regarding the algorithm, but I'm hoping this has helped please viewers enough to beat that retention issue . I need to study the analytics more to see if it's the case! Yes, you can trim pieces of your video afterwards, but it will decrease the sharpness of your video dramatically. When you upload your high quality sharp video, youtube compresses it before it puts its online, losing a lot of image quality. If you're going to edit the video on youtube, it will re-render the video that is already there! It creates a new file with again a loss of image quality and shows that video instead on your channel. You can also revert back to your previous version if you don't like the new version.

It's also really tricky if you have music in the video. Almost every video I make has music, and if there's a low retention spot it's not always easy to cut out. Videos that are more conversational, no problem.

I have mixed feelings about the obsession with views, likes, and money. We already had a medium that catered to the average, they called it TV. In the end, there was so much mindless drivel and placement advertising it wasn't worth watching. Watch times have a lot to do with the diversity of your audience, too. For some, a discussion is too simple, for others, too complicated. And worse, if a channel has a broad spread then a random sample will perform poorly even if it raises the bar for a subset of the audience. I think any contribution to the knowledge base out there deserves recognition, even if they don't entertain the masses. Those videos that are aimed at pure entertainment are on a rung below.

The end of your video drops like that because you added an end card. When someone clicks it you see that drop. So it’s hardly a bad thing because they’re moving to another of your videos, therefore getting you more views.

Does anyone know how long it takes for the retention data to actually consider the new length? I trimmed a couple of my videoes and the graph looks exactly the same. The average time vs percentage doesn't add up. Let's say I had a 3 minute video, and average view duration was 1:30 (50%). Now the video is 2:30, AVD is still 1:30, but percentage is also still 50%. I'm afraid youtube doesn't find and feed the new data to the algorithm.

I was just about to click the playlist, but before I had a chance to do that, I got an ad. When I skipped the ad, the ability to click the playlist was gone, so now I’m not sure if your edited out the end leading to that playlist, if you placed an ad there, or if KZbin was placed it there. Either way I was about the click, seems the video was edited to remove it, and that extra video I was going to watch i might not end up at. I suppose that’s also the risk of cutting out the drop at the end. Cutting the end, might actually impact your click through to the next video, and I’ve noticed this on a few videos of yours I tried to binge. So I’ll be careful about cutting out end screen outros that are designed to hand off viewers over to the next video. That said, my intros tank and I believe that’s because of voice. Would you say voice can be the make or break of a video? I have “great” art (otherwise no one would click at all) but the hockey stick comes once I start talking, indicating they despise my voice, and don’t want to wait to see if the video gets any good, Been doing a lot of binging of your content because you’re about the only channel that SHOWS the impact and importance of story telling and how to keep things moving, most other channels only say you need to do it, you actually show HOW to do it and how it impacts things. Essentially you’re the fusion of Nick Nimmin and Hillier Smith and I love both of their channels.

I watched the part about checking where your engagement falls off, and using youtube trim to cut the video short. Immediately did that for 6 videos.
