The ancient Cobra 148 GTL in my equally ancient Jeep is receiving the entire hemisphere with an ancient Wilson Silverload antenna that has been on the Jeep since one week after I bought it in 1996. It is likely the ancient Cobra 148GTL is it putting out thed full 12 watts after all these years. But I answered someone calling on channel 40 USB and he heard me just fine. It was even raining where I am. When Citizen's Band is open, you can not stop it. When they are closed, 3000+ watts will not open them. I rather wish I had a transmitter in my house. But the old Cobra 148 GTL is permanently mounted in the old Jeep since 1996. I would have to take apart the dashboard to get it out. It has been laying with white noise for the last ten years in my Jeep. The 1990s, that old radio was a passage to the world. I remember talking to the canary Islands with nothing but the radio out of the box. I did not think I would still have the same radio. Worse yet, I did not imagine I would have the exact same vehicle either. It is my time capsule on wheels. You should see the cassettes and CDs that are still regularly played in my tooling time machine also.

This gives me some great nostalgia. I am a ham but have been off the air for years because of antenna restrictions where I currently live (tried indoor antennas with zero success; ended up selling all my gear). Before I moved here, I had an IC-718 with an old vertical multiband antenna in the backyard - not a great antenna, but it did get me quite a few contacts, including Australia from the midwestern US. Ten meters was by far my favorite band! I also loved working 17 meters with a homemade dipole - I had some nice rag chews on that band. Watching this video makes me want to get back into radio, but I have to wait until I move to a better place. Thanks for the video! 73!

I am a listener. It was such a treat to hear 10 meter so open as to hear, AM, FM, SSB, and CW this day. I use an old television antenna and rotor to aim the antenna around on an all band communications monitor. It can listen from 100 kilocycles to 2.4 gigacycles. All bands have been very empty, save below 20 megacycles. But yesterday, All HF bands, 6 meters, 4 meters, and 2 meters had incredible propagation. It was like being a kid again during the last solar maximum. I even heard CW on 11 meter CB on channel 40 from Germany to someone in Northern United States of America. On Channel 16 LSB, I heard Mexico talking to Jamaica. I live in Saskatchewan, Canada and heard Dominican Republic on 10 meters. 12 meters was busy also. On 6 meters, I heard two operates conversing from Prince Edward Island, Canada, to Northern California, USA. 2 meters had sideband traffic to something similar to 40 meters! What a grand day for radio!

Hey Eric. Quick technical question: did you make those contacts with a vertical or horizontal antenna? I ask because I'm curious about the polarization severity when the band is open.
@HamRadioDX4 жыл бұрын
On Sporadic E, polarity doesn't mean too much as it shifts around. There may be some different between H and V but it could change in an instant. I've had several contacts over 1000's of miles on a vertical antenna on 10m and 6m. But a directional antenna always helps to fire your signal in the correct direction.

Today, the 13th of June 2020, there has been an all day opening on 10 meters. This is not necessarily rare, though not very common during the solar minimum. However, 28.475LSB was extremely busy. Lower side band is a rarity on 10 meters. AM/FM/USB and CW are the modes most commonly used on 10 meters as far as I can tell. I guess the legends are true. There is lower side band activity on 10 meters. It is just rare and illusive.

Today, the 27th of June 2020, 10 meters, 11 meter Citizen's Band, 12 meters, some wierd abandoned band between 11 meter Citizen's Band and 10 meters, and 6 meters is very open. With the humblest of antennas (an old Archer 75 antenna from radio shack with an added 103 inch vertical up and a 103 inch vertical down, I am hearing a lot of activity on the cheapest of SDR receivers. It makes me wish I could transmit. But I am very happy with just the listening. I know the 103 inch antenna going up and the 103 inch antenna going down is a 10 and 11 meter vertical dipole and the television antenna is also acting like a center ground plane of sorts. The antenna may actually transmit with low standing wave ratio. But I have no transmitter and more importantly, no license. I do not need the government cronies knocking at my door when they should be inverting their time with real criminals instead of some loser with a thrift market amateur radio. Chances are the few thrift store amateur radios I have seen likely do not work. But they would be very easy to fix.

FM & SSB is my preferred modes anyway and 28MHz 11Mtrs is a stone throw away from CB, so antennas i have will do just fine. I need to do something about it.
