Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Walk Of Life", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.

Mark Knopfler called into a bar and he was the only customer, apart from a band. They played their entire set to one man, at the end of their set the lead singer announced " Thank you very much..we are The Sultans of Swing!" And a legend was born!!

Sure . the video is taken from the Old Grey Whistle Test but the sound is clearly from the studio album. There is no way that the sound is live. But regardless, the point is that its missing the final and the best solo.

You have to have lived in this era to truly understand the impact Dire Straits had on 80's music. When they guys came on it was amazing. I know this first hand, their albums sold by the millions and we all had at least two or three of their songs on our playlists back then. I am just glad younger people today appreciate what they did.

Dire Straits was also particularly distinctive in they were 'Themselves', not punk or New Wave (tho slightly), or Boogie Blues, or '80's Hair Metal, or gated-reverb synthed-up Euro-pop... They were independent.

Very strange to have to tell young people about the impact Dire Straits had had. They were the biggest band in the world. We were in high school at the end of the 80's and the only topic was Knopfler and Dire Straits next album. Cure, U2... what a joke they were for us in comparison. Hum.. at least still think 35 years later we weren't so wrong to consider him as a musical genius.

I wholeheartedly agree! Makes me proud to be of English heritage. Of course the British Invasion began with the 'boys from Liverpool' and spread from there. I was in college in the mid 60s, and many male students started to grow long hair and cut it like McCartney's. Our parents and other adults were outraged to see boys sporting hair over their ears and shirt collars. A girl I was dating then, who is still my wife 55 years later, introduced me to her parents. This song came out in 1978. I was a junior in high school then. I remember skipping school and riding around with my friends listening to this song on cassette tape. It still sounds as good today as it did then. Brings back lots of good memories. Life was good then!

Mark writes songs about what he sees in normal life, with this song he is describing a band that he saw in a London pub, they were fairly poor but called themselves as the Sultans of Swing. His song ‘Money for Nothing’ was influenced by his visit to a tv and electrical goods store where the staff were commenting on a pop group singing on MTV, he just picked up on their comments and wrote the song about them.

Watching this made me cry just now. It brought back memories of my dad, he didn't show much enthusiasm for modern music ( he only had tapes of Bonnie Tyler, Fleetwood Mac and Dire Straights.). Whenever we went anywhere in the car, he would play this... He died in my car on the way to the hospital in 2008. I still miss him so much!

Mark Knopfler wrote the song while he was working as a teacher, long before he got a recording contract. It's astonishing. Notice how the guitar part is written to sound like the brass section of a swing band. Gorgeous.

I think you got it wrong with the version. 1st, this is a cut off edit of the studio version (+ it’s lacking the legendary solo at the end) 2nd, you said you were reacting to the live version and I guess people must have encouraged you to check out the Alchemy Live version. Mark Knopfler is a totally amazing guitar player, songwriter, and singer. He took his technique from Chet Atkins and made country fingerstyle guitar work in a rock and roll context. If you ever watch the movie "The Princess Bride", Mark wrote the music for that and is playing all the guitar parts.

In 1985 I helped my neighbor install a stereo system in his BMW 2002, for a car stereo competition: A Pioneer CD player, 4-Pioneer mid-range 6x9's, 2-Cerwin Vega subwoofers in a full trunk plywood tubed speaker box and 4-tweeters in the doors. And this was the first song we listened to test out the system. I'll never forget it. - One part of this song I LOVED and played over and over was the drumming fills, like @ 4:26 - Epic musicians.

Mark, the lead singer was in London and it started raining so he went into a pub he was passing and there was a jazz band playing called the Sultans of Swing, and that is where the song comes from. As other people have said, watch the Alchemy Live version if you like a good guitar solo.

This is an early live performance with the original band members. As others have said the "Alchemy Live" version is a harder heavier version with Terry Williams on drums & runs for a good 10mins with a monumental guitar solo by Mark K. Did you spot that he plays without a pick - finger picking style. He is the personification of a musical genius. One of my favourite bands of all time.

Mark Knopfler is one of my all time favourites. Absolute genius on guitar and an amazing songwriter. His voice may not technically be the best but it's unique and has a quality to it that fits the songs nicely, and as he's aged it seems to have taken on a more melancholic 'vulnerable' tone in a similar sense as Willie Nelson. I'd highly recommend some of his solo work as well, such as the album Privateering and a few tracks from his collab with Emmylou Harris on All The Roadrunning. For me there's just something about the melodies and 'emotion' he can portray with a guitar that's unlike anyone else. And unlike many other guitarists who feel the need to fill every moment with a note, for Mark the notes he doesn't play accentuate the ones he does, in a similar way to the legendary J.J. Cale. Mark is a true virtuoso. Straits wise I'd agree with many of the songs already recommended in the comments. I would also recommend giving a song called Wild West End a listen. You have just stumbled upon one of the greatest bands in the history of rock. Now heed everyone's advice & check out the Alchemy live version. Pay attention to Terry Williams the mad drummer, who is, in his own words, "Still bangin' on the bongos like a chimpanzee." That's a line from Money For Nothin' which is also worth a listen. You can't go wrong with Dire Straits. They played at Live Aid in 1985, just before Queen. Knopfler is a genius guitarist, composer & storyteller. His post-Dire Straits work is also astounding. Try Piper To The End or Fare Thee Well Northumberland. He has scored several films, including Princess Bride and Local Hero, one of my all-time favorite movies. The soundtrack is all instrumental except for one song sung by the late great Gerry Rafferty, The Way It Always Starts. I'd love to see you react to that one.

Dire Straits led by Lead guitarist, Mark Knopfler, Made this original version in about 1976, He is reputed to be possibly the finest guitarist of all time, and certainly is as far as I'm concerned, he was born and raised in London, Eng. I think one of the things that make Mark's playing stand out is that he doesn't use a pick so the sound tends to be smoother and less harsh. He's got great rhythm as well. I think with drums, bass and rhythm guitar unless it's specifically meant to stand out (John McVie The Chain for example) you often don't notice until it's not there.

Mark Knofler is tremendous live. I saw him in Newcastle a few years back. He also wrote the song "Why Worry" sung by Dire Straits and then played guitar on the version by the Everly Brothers, on their Born Yesterday album. Apparently Mark Knofler had actually written the song for the Everly Brothers.

Every time I hear this I’m transported back to 1979 when I was dating my late wife. I can still see the Fisher receiver on the wire stand in her apartment. Invariably this would playing on the local FM station when I came by to pick her up. Lost her to cancer in 2021 after 41 years. This song always takes me back. Miss you baby!😢

okay, whoever chose to fade this video at the moment when I was waiting for you to REALLY get blown away! The climax of the song is in the final riff and it's his signature riff! Whoever did this should not be allowed near music editing software ever again. Anyway, I gotta tell you, I'm taken back to 1978. I was 14 yrs old. My sister bought this cassette, their first, and we drove from PA to Arkansas to visit her boyfriend. The first time I was ever away from home. And we listened to this whole album (and yes, this first LP is one of those albums that every song is great) over and over again while cruising down the interstate. It was truly a moment in time. Almost 45 yrs later and I can still pull out this LP and do a start to finish. It doesn't get old.

Great to hear and see your honest and accurate appreciation! A treat, Dire Straits is. "Sultans of Swing" got me, as a favorite song starting from when I first heard its chiming brilliance Jan 1979, working in a nursing home, my first quarter in college in WA. Mark Knopfler is a guitarists' guitarist, so much feel for each tasty note or trill. He has a very unusual picking tech too: I think it's called Claw-hammer, or that's part of it. He plucks with several fingers of his right hand and thumb.

Notice that Mark plays his guitar without a pick, he is plucking the strings and it is down tuned to get that unusual sound on the riffs. Very talented and he has a video covering his guitars and style you should check out.

Dire straits, not only are they great , they showed how rock should be played .they are (in my personal view )one of the best things to ever come out of England 🇬🇧. I grew up listening to them ,there music is never out of date .

I remember when this LP came out and I was one of the first knowing it. I played it in my car, got a very good stereo, the Pioneer KP 88 Dolby tape deck, it was summer, had my windows open and literally everyone listened to this new and uncommon sound that blasted out of my car. This went on for quite a month until the radio stations picked it up and you could hear it everywhere ...
