The reason why this song sounds “heavy” is because Bernie (who normally doesn’t get involved in how his lyrics should sound musically - he leaves that to Elton’s genius) specifically asked Elton to give this song a Lennon-esque sound. Those violins and other melodic lines are an ode to the Lennon sound. Elton delivered brilliantly, as usual, to bring these lyrics to life in the way perhaps John Lennon would have. After all, this song is about love and Lennon wrote so many songs focusing on love (Imagine, Love, All You Need Is Love, among others). So Bernie wanted to honor that.

Just another song in the long list of songs dedicated to a major personality. Marylin Monroe, Roy Rogers, Princess Diana, John Lennon, and Freddie Mercury. You know someone really made the list; if Elton sings about them

Great reaction! Elton sounds so soulful on this track, his vocals are perfect. You want another 'heavy' Elton song from the the 90's - listen to "The Last Song", so beautifully bittersweet

I'm sure you would like Elton's 'I Want Love' (2001). Video features Robert Downey Jr and in some ways was a bit of a lifeline to him in re-kickstarting his career again after his various troubles (Elton was able to empathize with RDJ given his own experience of rehab etc). It has a very raw, emotional feeling to it and also sounds a little Beatle-ish in some ways.

From the same album there is a song I think you should really listen to. The song is "Blessed". At this point in his life Elton started wanting children. This song is about his future child. Eventually he and his husband did have two kids via a surrogate mother. Their names are Zachary and Elijah. In any case, this song speaks about the feelings any loving parent would have about their future child.

This song is DEEP.... caused me to think about NOT about what I don't have... but what I do have....love has the power to change motives... love is life...love has the power to make a junkie...put his or her needle down.... the power of love is INFINITE.... the power to bring out the greatness of ordinary men.... Can cause even a self destructive man...to once again believe... that life and love are even for somebody like him... that even he has value....

A super-less known song of his is Ticking. Written in the late 70s about a mass shooting by a troubled kid. It's amazing lyrics from Bernie Taupin that tell such a compelling story that was "ahead of its time" and is so much more relevant over 40 years later.

This amazing song was the lead single from an album which was something of an intended 'comeback' album in the 1990s, and although it was acclaimed (and Grammy Nominated) it didn't quite hit the high chart position it truly deserved. Elton himself was a bit surprised, as he had confidence in the song and so joked at the time that he clearly couldn't anticipate what the public wanted so would be releasing 'How Much is That Doggy in the Window' as his next single lol. That whole Made In England album is filled with great songs in fact. Check out "Blessed", "Man", or "Please" for example. You can't go wrong with any of them.

A powerful song from Bernie and Elton that I loved from the moment I heard it. I don't remember the video of it though. I saw it as a modern version of their "Border Song", one of the first singles released by Elton John. Which I also consider a 'call for us', like Amber said. And did you know that the song "Your Song" was covered by Billy Paul (the one from "Me and Mrs Jones")? He turned it into something completely different.

You should check out 1960s Elton John, before he took the name Elton John. Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, he was part of a British blues band called Bluesology in the early 60s. He took his current name in 1967, legally changing it in 1972, from the band’s saxophonist Elton Dean and frontman Long John Baldry; hence Elton John! Elton left the group in 67 to go solo. Check out the group’s 1965 song “Come Back Baby”, written and sung by Reg Dwight (now Sir Elton Hercules John).
