So, so, SO glad you got back to Peter. "Solsbury Hill" was actually his first hit, after leaving Genesis (in 1977). He is a master entertainer, worthy of a deep dive. "In Your Eyes" (esp. the live version) is phenomenal, as is the live version of "Secret World". I also recommend his duet with Kate Bush, "Don't Give Up", which is as uplifting a song as you'll find. "Digging in the Dirt", "I Have the Touch", "Steam", "Big Time"... so many great songs to choose from!! And speaking of artists/bands you've only done one time.... PLEASE give Radiohead another try. Jay, you did "Creep" in your very first week, and didn't like it. But you've come so far since then, and they are WORTHY of another chance. "Fake Plastic Trees", "Karma Police", "There There".... they are amazing.

The song is about the trepidation, anxiousness and, finally, elation that he feels as he readies to leave his band, Genesis: "Open doors would soon be shut," "So I went from day to day, Though my life was in a rut," and "I was feeling part of the scenery, I walked right out of the machinery." He's ready to go: "Watched by empty silhouettes ... I will show another me." Then, when he makes the announcement: "Today I don't need a replacement / I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant / My heart going "Boom-boom-boom." Among Gabriel's finest.

Absolutely best commentary about the song. Obviously you have your tickets for the upcoming tour. If you’ve never seen The Musical Box it’s a must for any Gabriel era Genesis fans. @peterbland72272 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the explanation. It seems to me Genesis was never the same after he left. Genesis became increasingly commercial - making music that does not stand the test of time. In the meantime, Peter Gabriel became better and better. I have a sense Fleetwood Mac had the same “machinery” character. Great interview with Bob Welch saying he never felt like he belonged and could be easily replaced.

When Peter left Genesis he moved to a simpler life in the countryside (outside Bath near Solsbury Hill) like many other artists in the 70s. Many of them grew kale and cabbage as it give rich haverst and are healthy. In Solsbury Hill video cabbage, with a bit of humour, is representing this change of lifestyle - leaving the intense touring with Genesis, focusing on family and mother earth. Also in the Sledgehammer video Peter is holding cabbages before turning into a fruit cage. 🙂

Unusual song because it's one of the very rare times that a song in an uncommon time signature hit the Top 40. Most songs are in 4/4 or 3/4, but this is in 7/4. The way it goes through the different parts, it isn't immediately obvious that something is "unconventional" about it, until/unless you start trying to follow it as if you're wanting to learn part of it. Part of the reason is that each bar is composed as if it's a standard count of eight, but the next bar keeps starting a beat early. You don't always catch it because the seven beats you *did* hear gave you what you needed from that bar.

This is one of my most cherished songs (which I play myself on the guitar). If I had to give up all my music except for ten songs this would be one of them. The back story (in 1977) was Peter Gabriel wanted to leave Genesis for a solo career but it was a big risk and shot in the dark. He walked up Solsbury Hill (in Somerset in the UK) and saw an eagle. It was a spiritual experience for him. He felt the eagle was telling him to take a chance and follow his heart (and leave Genesis). He did and "Solsbury Hill" was one of his first solo compositions. The song brings back strong emotions and means a lot to me personally. Thank you so much for reviewing it.

Think about how incredible Genesis was! Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel and Mike Rutherford, who went on to start Mike and the Mechanics, who also had some great songs. I saw Genesis live a looooong time ago, and remember thinking "damn these guys are really good" lol

Wonderful song. I've seen Peter Gabriel many times over the years from the early 80s up until 2008. The song is from his first solo album in 1977 and is mainly about leaving Genesis as their lead singer. That role was subsequently filled by their drummer Phil Collins before he also went onto become hugely successful as a solo artist in the mainstream. Peter was always a bit more niche with superb quality of output.

My favorite from Mr. Gabriel. When he was a baby my nephew would dance to the opening of this song. He just graduated high school, man I'm old! Please check out "Red Rain", "Steam", "Shock the Monkey", and "In your Eyes".

I was never big on "Sledgehammer" but I've always loved this song. Gabriel is a singer I forget about for long stretches, then I hear one of his best tunes and find myself wondering why I don't own one of his albums. Might be something I go looking for this weekend. Thank you for another great reaction. Again, I'd love for you two to react to Marvin Gaye, if you're not opposed to it for any particular reason. "Heard it Through the Grapevine", "Mercy Mercy Me", "Take This Heart of Mine", "Wholy Holy", "Suny", "Let's Get it On"... Just for a start. He was an outstanding vocalist and there seems to be a dearth of reactions to him.

"Back in the day" when Peter was lead singer for Genesis (and Phil Collins was backup), and I was new as a Genesis listener, I had a ton of trouble telling them apart; they sounded so much alike, believe it or not :)

Tony Stratton Smith, a former manager for Genesis, once said that Phil Collins sounded more like Peter Gabriel than Peter Gabriel did. 😱

Collins sang all the high vocal harmony parts. "Seconds Out" was a double live album, recorded after Gabriel's departure. Collins fronted the band (singing right well) and played drums on a few songs and shared or played along with Bill Bruford and Chester Thompson on others. It's really a stunning performance and I suggest Los Endos/Dance on a Volcano as an example.

And Definitely "Biko" as the very powerful messages in the lyrics trancends time, and is so extremely relevant now. Games Without Frontiers is also a very poverfull songs as far as the emotional message he is pushing. Definitely react to the Live at Athens version for both these songs. AndFrom this live Concert San Jacinto, and of Solsbury Hill, Lay Your Hands on Me, and In Your Eyes are must react songs.

He wrote the song about a spiritual experience atop Little Solsbury Hill in Somerset England after his departure from the progressive rock band Genesis, of which he had been the lead singer since its inception. The single was a Top 20 hit in the UK, peaking at number 13, and reached number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1977. Gabriel has said of the song's meaning, It's about being prepared to lose what you have for what you might get. It's about letting go.

Oh my GOD! I love this song! Brings me back to my childhood, my mom & I would listen to this song on the way to school. I’ve seen him live three times. He always puts on a great show. The next PG song you should get to next is In Your Eyes, or Don’t Give Up. He was also the original vocalist for the band, Genesis. Solsbury Hill is about depression and his decision to leave the band and go solo.

If you like Peter Gabriel, PLEASE react to some early Genesis. Peter was the lead singer before Phil Collins took over as vocalist in Genesis. Some great songs to check would be "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway", "Firth Of Fifth", and "Cinema Show" just to name a few.
