dudamel is such a genius conductor and brings the genius out in these kids. nobody can make an orchestra sound like dudamel. a thousand hours of technical accuracy and practice cannot make you understand how to put your soul in your music. life teaches you that. it is just as important if not more important than technique, music theory, muscle memory, scale practice, and so on. in a single word: emotion. the same pieces from many other conductors do not illuminate the heart in the same way; rather, they have a certain flat quality to them. these performances always remind me what being a musician means. to master your craft is to listen with every atom in your being. to become the music. you don’t learn this without blood sweat and tears.... which only end up making you better in the end. as a musician, music drips from your pores, vibrates in your words, subtly emanates from your every action in the world--especially your silence. so much of music is about silence. organized silence. to listen to the wrong song at the wrong time doesn’t work. even if you love the song. silence is so important.you also learn early on that few people notice for a long time. but those who get your style really get it. you are able to give them something. you just do it because you have no other choice. it is who you are.
