Welcome to Make My Space Work - a series where Shopify, in partnership with home decor expert Alexandra Gater, gift entrepreneurs with makeovers to make their spaces more functional and beautiful.
In this episode Alexandra is going to be helping David, a surgical resident, huge techno music fan, and an entrepreneur. He’s such a fan of techno music that he founded an apparel business called Techno Apparel!
Now for David, space isn’t an issue. The biggest problem David has is that he needs to use his space to work in, chill in, and entertain in, but right now he’s struggling to do any of this. His current set up really doesn’t flow: the printer is on the other side of the room to his desk, his tv distracts him from his work, and the furniture is just placed against the wall leaving all this awkward space in between.
Can Alexandra reconfigure David’s space to help him to focus on work efficiently, relax when he wants to, and have the room flow better? You got to watch to find out!

Everyone needs a Xico, man of many talents!! This space feels much more neutral it’s still manly but it has personality now, his partner would feel so much more comfortable (I would) its not acold, black and lifeless Batchelor pad any more. Loving the couch configuration.

People keep saying the TV should be centred to the couch and I completely disagree! That TV is MASSIVE and would only look right centred on the wall. PLUS once it's mounted.. it ain't moving. It's not something you can just move around when you get the urge to rearrange your furniture. This way they are not limited to this layout if things change in the future. Alexandra you nailed it! Awesome job!

I would have moved the TV over a bit so it was cantered with the couch and put a giant monstera beside it... But I just literally look for any excuse to put a monstera somewhere. Beautiful job, I loved this makeover and that freaking couch!!

Hopefully, this will help them make better use of space in future homes. Suggestion: Create a wood box to hold the paper and place it on top of the file cabinet and under the printer. (Not good to store paper upright like that.) An extra storage drawer could have been created under the file cabinet too given that they have limited storage.

that book stacking works if you have 20 books and you use them as decor. when you have a ton of them you stack them vertically and then another row horizontally to try to fit the rest :))

Really loved this make over! And definitely the idea that there is space to grow instead of having it fully done, because it did feel a bit unfinished but I already imagined what more can be added to the space. You laid a great baseline that can help. Awesome! Love your work!

Great design! Love the use of his items in the new layout. The sofa is in the perfect place. It works even though it is not centered. We have done a similar layout with our sofa and tv in our home. BTW when are you moving into your new work space? I can't wait to see the makeover!

lol we also have "that light" here in my house but It came in handy mid quarantine when the light switch in our kitchen broke and there was no one to fix it. Three long months that light was saving my dinner prep each time.

Looks great! Only problem is having a leather couch with cats. Their nails will poke holes in the material. And if they scratch the couch it will look a mess. I learned this the hard way when I left my big, expensive leather camera bag out where the cats could get to it. They absolutely ruined it.

Bright white, sage green, same rug, boho pillows... I just wish you had pushed yourself closer to his brand. I would have done the accent wall either pure black (and centered the tv to the sofa), or a deep rich cognac to tie in the sofa. A thick sheepskin rug and textured throw instead of your comfort zone rug and pillows. And a more linear and masculine light fixture. Usually I love your aesthetic and quibble the functionality, and this one I love the functionality but feel like the aesthetic is just a little off.
