The Mars Manned flight requires more upfront planning than any another space mission Space X will do. It will be the equivalent to the Apollo Moon landing mission of the last century. The keys to the successful Mars Mission are Detailed Planning, Flight and Crew Preparation, Complete Redundancy, and eventual Self-Sufficiency. The only reason for an Early Mission Termination should be a major flight crew related issue, not because of a failure of any mechanical or environmental systems. The Risks and Cost of this first Manned flight will impact future Mars manned missions. Everything needed must already be available on Mars when the Flight Crew gets there. They are literally on their own for the next 18+ months except for consultation from Space X or NASA.
@djohannsson82683 күн бұрын
Hope Space X chooses a full 500 day on Mars exploration mission, even if it has to be delayed until 2030. It's questionable to do NASA's 6+ months in space, 30 day stay on Mars(this could be a logical point where a 500 day extended mission could be early terminated), followed by 9+ months back. Unless this is considered a "preliminary" mission, with the real Space X mission to follow in 2 years. So many options...

Given they just landed a StarShip without a whole bunch of heat shield tiles, including ones where the landing pins would go, I can see them doing a setup where the landing pins are internal and act as landing gear on an airplane, the pins go through doors that open to allow them out. This actually could have been done on this gen 1 StarShip. The other option is just to leave the pins out with some fairings to protect them.

With regard to propellants, I would not be too surprised to see a pipeline bundle being installed from the launch site to the build site and possibly further. SpaceX could then extend the pipeline bundle alongside the highway all the way to Brownsville but I can see them exploring the possiblilities of putting in a railway line to Brownsville instead, with a railhead near the build site. If they did that they could potentially also start delivering engines and other build materials by rail, further reducing the number of trucks using the highway.

There is a pipeline made for natural already going to Boca. It was put there because the Sanchez site used to be a gas well. It doesn't make enough methane anymore for starship, but they could put a new pipe in the easement to pipe gas out of Texas' existing natural gas system and liquify methane at the Sanchez site. The only additional thing they would need to do is get an easement along the highway between Sanchez and the fuel farm.

Agreed with Musk about the SLS. It's a cool rocket for sure, but the cost is utterly insane: nearly $100B for a program that's fired off one test flight and will need close to another decade (and $50+B) before getting us back to the Moon. The failure doesn't stem from bad engineers or bad engineering. Rather, it stems from terrible technical requirements, micromanagement from Congress, a program structured for political stability over technical results, and a cost-plus contract structure. NASA is still capable of incredible things, and they have some amazing programs doing great science at a reasonable price. But the SLS program is the very definition of "fat, dumb, and happy."

SpaceX is such an impressive company in how fast it does stuff. Feels like back in the moon race days with the fast pace rocket tech was designed and built and solutions found to fix issues as they popped up without slowing or stopping forward progress. I still see a lot of hate towards spaceX based purely on the fact elon is involved but that is also insulting to the thousands of people working at spaceX who are the real force behind the company vs just one man. As a middle aged guy I really thought I had missed any chance of ever seeing anything like this because we went from the moon race to slowing down space exploration by humans to not even having a launch system to take people into space after the canceled the space shuttle. But here we are in a new space race and it's so fing amazing...Im loving it. Just hope I live long enough to see us make it to mars...all be it decades late.

Excellent video. Good work, Marcus. SpaceX will be able to launch 25 Starships per year from Starbase Boca Chica. That's 100 Starship launches within the next 4 years. That should be sufficient time for SpaceX to begin regular missions to the lunar surface using Block 3 Starships each carrying 20 passengers and 175t (metric tons) of cargo to establish permanent human presence there. SLS/Orion is out of picture (way too expensive). The route to the Moon would follow the Apollo missions from LEO to low lunar orbit (LLO) and back to Earth. That crewed Starship lander would be accompanied by an uncrewed Block 3 Starship drone tanker that carries the methalox needed for both Starships to return to an elliptical earth orbit (EEO) with perigee at 600 km altitude and apogee at 950 km altitude. The refilling operation would be done in LLO after the crewed Starship lander returns to LLO from the lunar surface and before the trans earth injection (TEI) burns are done by those two Starships. Ten Block 3 Starship Earth-to-LEO tankers are required to refill the Block 3 crewed Starship and the Block 3 uncrewed Starship drone tanker in LEO prior to their trans lunar injection (TLI) burns. Assuming that in four years the operations cost to send a Starship to LEO is $10M per launch, that part of the operations cost for this lunar mission would be $120M. Operations costs for the rest of the mission are TBD.

Replacing SLS: Dock Orion with Straship in LEO or take away the nosecone of Straship (which seems to be just empty space in the images anyway) and launch Orion on top of the HSL (crew separately in Falcon 9). You don't need ICPS. Also safer to dock in LEO rather than LLO and the crew can live in Starship on the way.

I don't know if launching ICPS on Falcon Heavy would be possible. It would definitely require significant alterations to the ground support equipment, the Falcon Heavy itself, and possibly even the HIF. Also ICPS, along with other DCSS stages are discontinued and aren't intended to fly on missions beyond Artemis 3. Finally Orion isn't really meant to be able to dock with ICPS backwards and docking nose-to-nose would mean performing the TLI burn while the astronauts in their seats are basically upside down. What might be more feasable would be to still launch Orion on something like Vulcan Centaur, but then have a HLS derrived transfer vehicle (either based on HLS Starship or Lockheed Martin's cislunar transporter) take it from LEO to TLI. The transfer stage would probably want a small crew capable orbital module with correctly oriented seats that would allow Orion to dock with it nose-to-nose and have the astronauts not hang upside down in their seats during the TLI burn, but unlike ICPS they'd probably have the performance budget to do that.

Marcus, the areas that you thought had missing heat shielding are correct. They left the tiles loose to ensure they would fall off to test the bladed material underneath them.
@Lu.capuchino4 күн бұрын
they dont let the tiles loose, they literally cant with the pin mechanism
@jroar1234 күн бұрын
@@Lu.capuchino You are absolutely correct. That is why SpaceX engineers purposely introduced potential problem to see the results. Remember, StarShip in still in the Testing phase.

@@Lu.capuchino Is that not why they left the V1 tiles on it rather than replace them like they did on the prior flight? They wanted to stress test the TPS?
@Lu.capuchino3 күн бұрын
@@imaginary_friend7300 They didnt redo the whole heatshield because it was not needed in some areas, the real stress test was on the sides and on the forward flaps

The only real solution to getting propellant to the launch site, in enough volume to supply a busy launch schedule is: bulk delivery. That means either a rail line or pipeline. It would take a dedicated fleet of tanker trucks running non-stop to deliver that quantity. This will require a much heavier duty roadway to support the weight and wide enough not to hinder other traffic. A rail spur to the site would be far less expensive than new roads and a dedicated fleet of trucks. A pipeline would be even better.

That might be the plan, since last I heard missions will fly from the cape while Boca remains a primary R&D site.

SpaceX has said they can do a propulsive landing with Dragon now. Can you imagine that one landing back at the cape! That would be to cool!
@imaginary_friend73004 күн бұрын
When and where did they say this? I know they wanted to that originally but was dropped and there is no landing hardware. What Dragon are they going to modify?

awesome presentation and content.....as usual.....Thanks😊

Seemed to visually be a perfect launch so curious to see what the 'regular' damage is to the OLM and the tower and quick disconnect. If those structures are burned each time to the point of requiring refurbishment, the design may need to be altered to support rapid reuse. Love seeing all the raptor engines and the diamond design.

Yes, it's all still a giant WIP!

As a human, landing on a starship seems like a truely terrifying proposal.

Agreed, NASA, JPL and others are very good at making probes, landers and science missions. Leave the heavy haul business to private corps to compete with each other.

I say I say those look like legs on that there Starship; Not sure how some people expected the thing to land reliably and actually take off again without blowing up without legs but there we go. Then again it is kind of funny that some people don't get simple things even after having it explained to them, good thing we have pretty pictures!

Space X mentioned in the broadcast that some of the tiles were made of steel for testing, I think the strip of missing tiles are where the steel ones were and they burnt off
