I've been waiting for this. The subsequent seasons highlight how Pizzolato is truly a one-hit-wonder (due to plagiarism). I remember watching those seasons and waiting patiently for the occult elements to be given depth, which seemed the natural trajectory. It's such a shame.

True Detective Season 1 remains at the very top of the "one single season of tv drama" mountain. And I don't see it vacating that spot to any other show any time soon.. or perhaps ever. Rust Cohle is an amazing character and perfectly acted, too. The show truly is a masterpiece.

This was a really interesting discussion around true detective s1. It's such a nuanced show and I still genuinely believe it's 10/10 and one of the greatest pieces of media ever created.

Great video with some interesting points, really appreciate the side channel stuff. I'm inclined to excuse the theme-cribbing (it's difficult to imagine most of the works I know and love today existing without it) but taking lines almost verbatim irks me. Similar thing with Frank Herbert's Dune - I've never been able to bring myself to rate it when many of the iconic lines are actually worse versions of lines written by Lesley Blanch in Sabres of Paradise.

Season 1, as you said, had a very unsatisfying conclusion. Season 2 and 4, were just not good at all. However, if you did not get into season 3, give it a chance, to me it stood out above the rest. It had elements of that mystique from season 1, but the storytelling was better, and very well wrapped up. I'd say you miss out if you skip this one.
