+Howard Springsteen Thank, Howard. Ideally, with this carving disc I would like to use a 7" grinder with 60 grit paper to smooth out the shape and then go to the orbital sanders for smoothing. I lack the 7" grinder though. I think for the next sculpting project I will purchase the King Arthur disc to pair with my Squire disc for a cleaner cut. Or just pony up and buy the Arbortech TurboPlane.

At 5:35 you apply danish oil...then at 6:06 is that a sealer? or like a varnish? Im also going to be doing a reclaim bench with some fir timbers and would like to know how to really bring out the colour. Thanks! Subbed
@SeanRubino8 жыл бұрын
+Alan Douglas Hi, Alan, thanks for subscribing! Yes I applied a dark walnut Danish Oil to add colour first. Otherwise the SPF (spruce, pine, fir) and Redwood would look too plain. After a 5 days of applying that once a day I started wiping on Gloss Minwax Oil based Polyurethane diluted 50% with mineral spirits. I like the gloss for the first several coats because the light that reflects off the finished surface shows ANY defect in the finish, i.e. dust, lint, etc. Those defects can be sanded out with 600 grit wet/dry sand paper with water as a lubricant. After 14 (yes, 14) coats of thinned gloss poly, I wiped on 2 coats of satin poly in the same manner. 1 week later when the finish had time to fully cure, I rubbed the whole thing down with a 5000 grit pad from the auto parts store that was lubricated with mineral spirits and mineral oil. I should note that the initial coats of gloss poly were applied with a 3000 grit pad and the excess was wiped with a cotton cloth dampened with finish. The final result is a surface that is so smooth it really can't be beat. Enjoy the show!

Very nice this bench but found a big mistake in a making progress bkz used here many PC's square or rectangular size wood and top off the bench made carving and four sides are slapped down maybe 30 or 35 degree so before applying glue each PC wood we could cut carving using band saw, jig saw or others saw and four sides also could cut it's degree and then use glue for joint. such making was so easy and faster but using angel grinder making carve very difficult and long time. thank you.

Absolutely beautiful bench man - 2 questions - what type of finish did you put on after the Danish oil? And what is the other wood besides pine?
@SeanRubino9 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Thomas. After the Danish oil fully dried, about 3 full days in my location, I wiped on 14 coats of gloss Minwax oil based poly that was diluted 50% with mineral spirits. Essentially that was like putting on 7 full costs. Then I wiped on 2 coats of Satin Arm-R-Seal. As a final touch to get the smooth even shine I rubbed the surface down with a 50/50 mix of mineral oil/mineral spirits with a 5000 grit pad and rubbed the oil mix off with a clean cotton cloth. The wood combination was Doug Fir, Spruce Pine Fir (SPF from HD), and Redwood. All 2x4 material I had laying around for a long time that I needed to get rid of. I didn't know I was using redwood until I planed the boards because it was painted initially. Thanks for watching!

Great bench man! What did you use to do the acid finish on the steel base? and what wheel type did you use on your grinding wheel?
@SeanRubino8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, +Felix Espana! The patina solution was a 14" length of 12AWG that was coiled and dropped into about 8 oz of muriatic acid then diluted in a gallon of water. The wheels on the angle grinder were a thin cut off wheel, a regular metal grinding wheel, and a 60 grit flap sanding disc to finish it up to shiny metal. I used a King Arthur Squire carving disc for the seat sculpting. Thanks for watching!
@fbiker798 жыл бұрын
+Sean Rubino Thanks for the reply. It is really a beautiful bench. both of them look nice, but the one shaped is much nicer in my opinion. The other one is probably a faster build though. How wide was the bench? I noticed you didn't give any dimension. I would love to re-create it.................someday! Thanks again for the response.
@SeanRubino8 жыл бұрын
+Felix Espana yeah I planned on making the bench a sculpted bench from the beginning but I wanted to show it as a block seat so folks could take inspiration from that too. It was standard bench dimensions: 13" wide, 40" long, and 17" tall.

Awesome job, Sean! That bench turned out beautiful. Looks like it'll probably last forever hahaha. Was that 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" 1/4" thick square tubing?
@SeanRubino9 жыл бұрын
+Braxton Wirthlin Thanks, Braxton! I used 1-1/2" square tubing at 3/16". I was worried about burning through 1/8" thick stock as I had a few times on the bases of the bookshelves made earlier. It is a hefty bench. If I had a real MIG set up I would have just used 1/8" material. That is plenty strong for this application.
@BraxtonWirthlin9 жыл бұрын
+Sean Rubino Even thinner than that would be fine too. I used 0.65 1"x2" rectangular tubing on the coffee table I just built and it's still super strong.
@SeanRubino9 жыл бұрын
+Braxton Wirthlin I don't have a source for anything thinner than 1/8". That is good to know because the cheaper the material the more profit in the end. I paid $65 for a 20' length of the square tubing. I can make two of these benches with that.

Wow, that bench is stunning! +1 subscriber! What is the stuff you spray on your metal racking? I didn't get that part. And for curiosity, how many hours did you put into this bench?
@SeanRubino8 жыл бұрын
+ProbeGT2 thank you! The spray was a patina solution I made. There is a video on my channel about it. Mixture of muriatic acid and copper. I probably had about 20-24 hours in the bench.

what type of wood did you use?

I used Doug Fir and Redwood 2x4 material that was sitting around my shop for a few years.

+Sean Rubino looks great! I want to try my own version. I have a ton of white oak slabs that I have no clue what to do with and I just bought a kutzall disc too.

+Phillip Rowland Well there you go! You are all set to start putting out some awesome benches. In retrospect about the seat carving, I should have drawn a curve on the side and then set the table saw blade at the heights to roughly shape and set the depths of the seat. The way I did it turned out fine but doing it at the table saw first would have made it much more uniform.
@RCW-Designs9 жыл бұрын
+Sean Rubino I thought about drilling depth holes first and then running it across a Dado stack to get the rough shape. or even just my hand power planer.
@SeanRubino9 жыл бұрын
I think the dado stack should be sufficient. When I make another I'll do that then use my Shinto rasp to clean it up.

Also is it weird that I actually miss doing all my welding with a flux core machine? Just leave it on high and weld everything. Can't do that on a real mig.
@SeanRubino9 жыл бұрын
I don't think that is weird. I don't have a gas setup and I know it would be cleaner but I get a craving for welding once in a while and I have at it with the flux core wire. It works, it ain't pretty, but it works.

Most excellent!! 2 Thumbs up. Aside from danish oil, what else did you finish it with?

+Thomas yates Thank you, Thomas. I thinned Gloss Minwax Oil Base Poly about 50% with mineral spirits and applied about 14 coats most of them with a 3000 grit abrasive pad from the auto parts store. The last few coats were applied with a 5000 grit pad. After rubbing on each of those coats, I wiped off the excess with a tightly folded cotton cloth lightly dampened with finish to get the excess finish, abrasive, and dust off the surface. The final 2 coats were full strength General Finishes Satin Arm-R-Seal just wiped on with a cotton cloth as before. The final treatment was a rub down with the 5000 grit pad with a 50/50 mix of mineral spirits/mineral oil and then rubbed out with a cloth. The finish is very smooth and looks great.
@thomasyates85619 жыл бұрын
Wow, lots of rubbing. Finishing is my weakest bit of knowledge. Never sure what is compatible with what,so im always in fear of being one coat away from disaster. Wish I could find some Red Wood here in Florida, sure that would cost me 2 arms and a leg.

+Sean Rubino I have a completed a 6 week hand carved coffee table and i'd like to try what you took the time to describe for me. It's been sitting in the shop for a week begging me to finish her. I have tested numerous stains, dyes, tung oils, etc...and i still find myself looking at it thinking, i'm about to screw this up. If this was any other project i might not be so reluctant, all i see is 6 weeks of hard work going down the drain if i screw this up. So, with that said, i have decided to mimic exactly what you did here, and pray for the same result. So i have one last question. Is there anything you forgot to mention in your description before i tempt fate? Maybe something you could have done better? Or wish you hadn't done, or could have done that you didnt mention before? Sorry, i know im asking a lot of you.
@SeanRubino9 жыл бұрын
+Thomas yates wow hand carved. I assume that means the surface has some texture? If it does, wiping poly on the surface may be problematic as the high spots (assuming there are marks from a gouge) will pull finish off and pool in the low spots. That point is moot if the surface is smooth. I'll advise you as if the surface is smooth. The only thing I would do differently than I described above would be to apply 3 coats of Arm-R-Seal at the end. It would just make me feel a little safer when doing the final rub down that I wouldn't burn through the thin layers and I to the glossy finish, thus revealing shiny spots. Other than that, one or two coats of Danish oil would be fine (I think I put on 5 with no change in color or appearance, just time and money wasted.). If you choose to use Danish oil initially, allow the surface to dry for 4+ days. That stuff takes a long time to dry. All this information is under the assumption that you are using a domestic wood such as Maple, walnut, etc.
