Hello Chris My name is Pierre Rousseau, I am from Canada. I just now discovered your channel quite by accident...the kind of accident that I really like. About 10 seconds in to the first video, I knew I was going to like it. Not just for the projects or your skills as a woodworker, but the cinematography , you obviously have some experience in visual arts of sorts !! Being a woodworker myself, I watch a lot of woodworking videos, and I think most of them are pretty good, but your video are of a very good quality !! Thank you for making them ! I will be watching. I am certain your videos will be successful Sincerely your's Pierre Rousseau

@musamor758 жыл бұрын
Chris, not everything's about time. It's more about approach, and the joy that certain of these can bring. Don't be too overwhelmed by the number of tools. After all, you can boil them down to their basic functions, i;e 1)planing with, or 2)against, the grain. I'd sincerely recommend the following : 1) low-angle block plane (Veritas), 2) no.4 1/2 bench plane ( Lie Nielson and NOTHING ELSE!), 3) low-angle bevel up mitre plane (Veritas), a medium shoulder plane (Veritas again), and maybe to finish, for your pleasure, a no. 6 or 7 shooting plane (optional)of either make. Follow up with 200, 1000, 5000 grit Japanese water stones (read up on their use beforehand). The blades supplied by both makes are finely honed to start with. That's it. Bravo, well done on 2nd job. Nice work. Keep going

Beautiful piece of furniture, and excellent video. Suggestion, do all the sanding and break the edges before assembly. That allows you to get into all the tough corners. Also, consider applying the finish to all pieces before assemble. Just tape off the joints where glue will be applied. I've found these steps save a lot of time in the long run.
@Foureyes.Furniture8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark. I've done that on occasion in the past. I probably won't do it on the videos though, just b/c it wouldn't be as interesting to watch. Well...unless it is absolutely necessary, then I may or may not show it. In fact, on some of the other builds (cabinets) I do sand the insides before assembly...I don't think I showed it. Can't recall though.

Put some plastic or metal feet on it, so that if the porch gets at all wet, it won't be soaked up into the bottom of the wooden legs. Looks great, and loved the detailed information. I know everyone gives people crap when they have a whole shop full of expensive tools, but as I watch it, I can see says of doing make of the things with inexpensive versions of said tools anyways. Those who can't lack imagination. :)
@Foureyes.Furniture8 жыл бұрын
+necrojoe Thanks! Yes...it's definitely possible to make the bench with fewer and cheaper tools. I think that one of the points that goes missing on the people who get mad that I have lots of tools, is the fact that I actually use these tools to make money when I build commissioned pieces. That's almost exclusively what I used them for the past 4 years. Only now am I beginning to build more things for myself. About the feet. I have some spacers so it isn't actually touching the ground now. Also, the only time that porch gets wet is if I hose it off...so I'll just move it out of the way when that happens.

i like this video simply because it shows the progression of skill from what was built earlier (the flimsy bench) to what the artisan builds now (the modern bench) It gives me hope, one of my first projects was a bench as well, though i took a different approach... i dont think my beginner bench will break easily. It is made with solid pieces of mdf and a few 1 by 2s for extra support. for a cross stretcher i built an extra shelf useful for placing shoes on. I also upholstered mine so that your arse would not get sore sitting on it.

Nice job Chris. I appreciate how you show your process while also revealing your tooling. I like this because I think sometimes these things stagnate when there are really a lot of technological advances going on; a good way for me to look at my set-up through a new lens. I just came across your work yesterday, but am tuned in for more.

I really love the design. It feels Japanese, 50s/60s (the best modern parts 😉), but somehow timeless. The structural component is very visual. You see, that the top tilts the legs outwards and the stretcher pulls it inwards. This creates a balance between push and pull, you can see. The finish is excellent. This bench has an aura, that attracts you to sit down.

I only subscribed because I like how precise you are when you cut and sand near the line you made on the wood.

i think i am going to use this for making my outdoor table. only difference i would make is i would use a thicker piece as the bench and then inset the top piece that is meant to sandwich the bench so it would run flush with the top of the bench, it would probably work better for the application i need. nice job by the way. diffinietly a very nice design. i am glad i saw your video. good editing too!.

That relaxed and methodical procedure to the details really inspired me! I am often too anxious to get going and finish and therefore make mistakes! Thanks for the video! Awesome job!

Perfect video, great bench, thanks for sharing. Like your "silent" approach. Couldn´t sleep and did search for something to watch - I like the music, relaxing. Kind of Spa for eye and ear. Cheers.
