I like the Battenshield door bar system, but in most suburban residences in America it would only be of use if the glazing on all large ground-floor windows and sliding glass doors could be replaced with the Riot Glass panes shown just before that. Sliding glass doors can otherwise be breached in a couple of seconds with a rock picked up from the garden.

I love the Battenshield, pretty cool design. Way too expensive. I don't have any sliding glass doors, but I have brackets on all my exterior doors for 2x4's. The Battenshield is $1300. For under $15, you can buy two brackets and a plank and get the same level of protection, it's just not as elegant. I am thinking about building my own version of this that can stay mounted on the door, but I'm fine with just manually putting the plank in place. Battenshield sells the exact same setup that I use, that I paid about $10 for, for about $85 on their website. Most hardware stores carry those brackets which are specifically designed to hold a 2x4 as a door barricade.

Some of these are practical, but some are fairly extreme and may run afoul of fire laws that require exit doors have locks that can be quickly and easily disengaged, even by children and the disabled. If you make your doors intrusion-proof you have to do the same with your windows. I imagine that the Riot Glass is quite pricey!
