50 years ago in August 1971, a 20-year old Bengali officer serving as a Lieutenant in Pakistan’s elite 14th Para-Brigade, stationed in Sialkot, crossed the border carrying in his boots critical military documents and vital battle information which, months later, invaluably helped the Indian army win the war between India and Pakistan. That officer’s name was Lt. Col. Quazi Sajjad Ali Zahir. Today, in an exclusive 29-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, he recounts and relives the almost unbelievable story that made him one of the youngest war heroes of 1971.
Col. Sajjad - as he now is - tells the story of his escape from Pakistan and why he believed he had to do this. He recounts how he had to hide in a gorge to avoid firing and deliberately did not surrender to the BSF for fear they might “trade him” with the Jhelum Rangers but chose instead to be captured by the CRPF, very close to the Samba Highway.

Very nice interview. Was wondering 2 -3 days back while watching 71 war documentary , how many war heros of 71 war would be alive since it's been 50 years and average age of a soldier would be 30 years. Here we could listen to a hero who was 20 yrs old that time and he can still move people to tears thinking about that time and lamenting the loss his parents. I Wish Good health to Col Sajid. You are doing a great job recognising war heros

So the fighters had to do things which others in normal circumstances cannot even imagine. My 18 year old uncle fought for 9 months and was martyred with 11 bullets. Most people know the story of a paf pilot flt lt Matuir rehman and pilot of Minas both honored by their respective countries after the war..where rehman wanted to defect to India in his T33 and pilot offr Minas failed his attempt.both died in the crash because young Minas fought with the controls and crashed the trainer aircraft...heros for their countries. thanks Mr karan thapar

We were upper primary students then. We used to hear a lot of stories about killings and refugees pouring into India. The Indian News Review in the theatres was showing moving images of Bangladehis. I remember very well the 'Bangladesh tax' (10 paise) levied on cinema tickets. After the victory the college students in our town took out a huge procession in which we children shouted slogans. All that we knew was India defeated Pakistan and vivisected it. The whole nation was jubilant. Elders in our families got glued to radio sets and felt elated at the turn of events. Later we realized that national pride was at its zenith in December 1971, as never before or after. The sacrifices of East Bengalis are to be written in golden letters. Thousands of Bangladeshis like Col Sajjid had scripted a new chapter in the history of liberation struggles.

Touching story! Great interviewee. Impatient interviewer, as usual. Thapar is so interested in the military story that has been repeated so many time that he completely missed the human angle. Col Sajjad, it appears, was open to discussing the cost that his (and others' too) family - mother, sisters, father and brother - paid for his heroics deeds but Thapar wouldn't let him. We missed an opportunity to hear the untold story of millions of common Bangladeshis who fought for the independence of their country.

Before him Muslim ummah had Mir Jafar , Mir Sadiq etc Mir Jafar served as the commander of the Bengali army under Siraj ud-Daulah, the Nawab of Bengal, but betrayed him during the Battle of Plassey and succeeded Daulah after the British victory in 1757. Mir Jafar received military support from the East India Company furthering British victory Mir Sadiq held the post of a minister in the cabinet of Tipu Sultan of Mysore. In the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War in 1798-99, he allegedly betrayed Tipu Sultan during the Siege of Srirangapatana, paving the way for a British victory Fast Forward names have changed but characters remain the same and paved the way for Indian victory and creation of Bangla Desh

Mr. Karan Thapar, I'm from Bangladesh and always an admirer of your wonderful presentations and interviews. Especially, we know from your interviews with different pesonalities about Indian democracy, rule of law and the press freedom. Do you know that consecutive Indian governments have been associated with undermining the democracy in Bangladesh? Our last election was even stolen by Sk Hasina regime overnight prior to election day! Astonishingly India and China have been behind this government. The US and democratic world are totally against this fascist regime because of destroying all of our institutions! If Indian democracy is on life supported as mentioned by Mr. Siddart Vardarajan,Bangladesh democracy is about to be graved! May I request you to get into the deep why our friends who helped us to gain independence in 1971 behind a party instead of the people of Bangladesh? Still in your country you have voting rights but for the last 10 years Bangladeshi voters had no rights to cast their votes since this regime has become North Korean Kim like authortarian thug!

Salute to great Bangladeshi General SAJID , he is real hero of both india and Bangladesh, not only both countries but he fought for the universal human rights, Bangladesh was a greatest human crisis for all humanity, 4 millions Bangladeshi was butchered in such an inhuman way , hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshi women were raped by Pakistani army .but as their is a saying in English,”EVERY BAD LUCK IS OPPORTUNITY “ now Bangladesh is a very progressive country much better than Pakistan, it is the greatest attribute to the soul of Bangladesh citizens and Indian solider who lay their life for a great cause .

People who are commenting on this interview are such a Hippocrates, when India fight for Bangladesh people who are traitors in Pakistan’s view are heroes for India and some bangali people. But if sikhs fought for khalistan they’re traitors in India’s methodology and heroes for Sikhs and remember there were so many heart wrenching stories of demolishing Khalsa and Sikhs😢

Very interesting. Thanks to Col. Sajjad for sharing his experiences with all of us and doing his part in liberating his people in very trying times. However, I do not believe someone as junior as him would have possessed any strategically vital/useful information to the Indian army.

Agree with Native. I graduated from PMA in early 1972. No Lieutenant is privy to strategic, high level information. I am glad he made it across. East Pakistanis were never treated well by the West Pakistanis.
