Madhu Trehan Interviews Karan Thapar on his book, Devil’s Advocate

Karan Thapar’s new book, Devil’s Advocate, has got people talking once again about access journalism, New Delhi’s close-knit Lutyens’ circle and the importance of protecting a source. In this interview, Madhu Trehan addresses a host of these issues. About being a Lutyens’ journalist, he responds, "Falling into the Lutyens' category means you are not desi and ganwar and I don't wish to be ganwar in any sense of the term." Thapar has devoted a full chapter on his attempts to uncover the BJP's boycott and refusal to appear on his programme. Madhu reads an article by Thapar where he exposes Narendra Modi as a source and writes of him, "The man I discovered last week is a mere creature - of prejudice, of petty vengeance, of double standards and forked-tongue utterances. The first Mr Modi deserved to be chief minister. The second deserves to be sacked."
Madhu also asks about the ethics of quoting Pavan Verma without his permission and betraying Sambit Patra who was trying to help him. Thapar also leaked a story to a newspaper about Amitabh Bachchan after his boss demanded he remove that section from the recorded interview. Watch what he has to say.

Since I had no prior opinion on any of these two people I started with thinking Karan was the bad guy here but as the interview progressed it started to settle on me that he's a journalist and people don't tell him things, he takes it out of them. He's doing his job by speaking the truth. However it was such an enjoyable watch because two people were discussing their wildly different povs without anyone raising their voice in the most elegant manner possible. How can this name calling, one-upmanship, bullying, scoffing, and preaching on the part of Mrs Trehan ever be called an interview? She seems to hate a good number of people, particularly the ones who she considers more capable than herself. One hopes that her journalistic discipline would have enabled her to keep her hatred/contempt under check and ask meaningful questions, but the hope is in vain. Very true. It's one thing to ask uncomfortable or tuff questions, questions that put you on the spot and demand a response. But why was she dragging on them and constantly calling him names and sort of straight up bullying him to say that he agrees he's a horrible person. WoW what an interview! Grabbing the bull by its horns. @Madhu amazing interview even though it seemed to be a tough one, and the opponent was in an attacking mood with no ethics n morality. You asked the hard questions still without getting frightened or subdued and the best part was as they say in English - you didnt let the pig drag you in the mud as that's what it likes to do... You kept your high ground!

Notwithstanding many comments here, I think this interview is pretty well done. Madhu Trehan offers a mirror to Karan Thapar when she interviews him. Pay attention to the topics and stories she brings up, they are crucial and deserve no different treatment (e.g. the Amitabh interview at the end). If you think her 'journalistic skills' or 'interview manners' are not great, you are mistaken. For example, check out her interview of Arun Shourie or Barkha Dutt.

My sentiments exactly. I discontinued my subscription to Newslaundry because of her. There is no limit to her irrational hatred of a range of people. While journalists shouldn't be any politician's friends, they most certainly shouldn't hate anyone either, at least while being journalists. I think she will do a big favour to Newslaudry by maybe supporting it from behind the curtain but not letting her biases impact their reporting.

Karan is intimidating to us viewers too. Never feel comfortable watching his interviews. The only time he behaved was with Ms. Arundhati Roy who clearly would have given him back in his own way.

I’m into 29mins of this interview and already an idea is forming in my mind. The interviewer ( perhaps in their youth) had a bad crush on Karan and he wasn’t interested. She somehow hasn’t gotten over it yet and taking it out on him. And, this is highly amusing for him. 😜
