Yeah, higher compression and no cats. That is what destroyed performance in the 70s and 80s, compression brought down and the catalytic converter, literally cut horsepower in half. I think the Buick 6 cylinder, used in the Grand National, in the late 80s was the beginning of adjusting to and getting numbers back up.
@scottcupp8129
@scottcupp8129 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheSchmed Absolutely. Someone lopped the cat off of my 99 E250 Cargo with 5.4 in it. So I had a welder friend of mine weld me a couple pieces of pipe where the cat was. In Lea County NM we do not have to worry about smog regulations as there are none here. After that cat was chopped off, I noticed a considerable increase in horsepower and performance. That 5.4 Liter 2 valve can breath and it loves it.

Wow! VisioRacer is a handsome fellow! This is one of my favorite channels ever. So much of KZbin is about 3000hp Miata’s with 4 turbos or Lambos and it all becomes too much sometimes, like anything I could ever accomplish on a car means nothing, but I love all engines, the stranger, the better!

Visio! The Sea Scouts group that I'm a member of owns a ship with a straight 8 Deutz engine! It's called the SA8M 517 :) We maintain it ourselves. There's only some info on it out on the internet. It's a naturally aspirated, 18.050 cc (18,05 L) indirect injection four stroke diesel unit with an overhead valvetrain (two valves per cylinder) and somewhere between 155 and 170 horsepower at 1350 rpm. Its bore x stroke sizes are 130 x 170, respectively and it weighs 1.5 tonnes. No idea on maximum torque though. Maybe you knew about it already and didn't put it in one of the videos because there's hardly any footage of it, but anyhow, here you go :) I'll upload a few videos of it if you like, for your next inline 8 engine video! I'm also subscribed by the way, keep up the good work!

A good range of inline 8 engines, from the low revving low horsepower automobile engines built for smoothness to powerful racing engines. That Mercedes engine was a real monster especially for when it was built. If you do another episode on straight eights you have to include the Sulzer 8LDA28 in the British Railways class 33 locomotive, this is another very nice sounding and long lived diesel engine.

For any of you that are fans of old race cars, I recommend looking up vids of “Victory by Design” which is a tv series from the 90’s where racer Alain DeCadenet drives the heck out of old cars from the 20’s through the 80’s and he means business! Great show! I believe it can be found on KZbin.

just a subtly that most folks would not know about or notice, but one of those Mercedes Benz engines you show is actually 2 inline 4's linked together. That configuration was used in the 300 SLR race car up to 1955 when the SLR crashed into the crowd, and burned to the ground as a great deal of magnesium was used on that car. Regardless, MB used two 4 cylinders linked together in a number of race efforts. One of the most successful racing campaign wherein straight eights were used, and who won many races was the Studebaker inline 8L. Examples of this remarkable engine can be found online, with some excellent pictures and descriptions. Thanks again for making motive power so interesting and educational.

You know, I know quite a bit about American engines. But, I got to tell you, all the european motors, and all the motors around the rest of the world, some of which I knew nothing about, until I found Visio Racer Channel. You've actually taught me so much information about engines from across the globe, motorcycles from across the globe, and that's not to be taken lightly, considering I am an ASE certified Master Tech of 38 years. So, I'm no stranger to engines, I promise you. I built my first small block Chevy V8 when I was 12 years old. Built my first Briggs & Stratton when I was six. I got my first motorcycle when I was 7. I absolutely love the channel, love the layout. There's only one thing I dislike, not really dislike, just like the old one better, let's say..... that has to be you drifting that blue car in the intro. Yeah, that never gets old. But yeah this channel is 💯 all day long.

I think the straight-eight is suited to the narrow hood and independent fenders that were used in the old days. They are better at cutting thru the air and much easier to work on. I think they should be brought back. I would snap one up for sure. I'm sick of all the bs on the market now.

You share my exact sentiments sir. With todays superior metallurgy and electronic gimicry, a DOHC alloy head, 9 main bearing alloy block engine would be a dream to own ! Fuel injection, stratified charge combustion chambers, and variable valve timing , 4 valves per cyl, That's the way to go !! It would be great ,if it was a short stroker, over square bore to accommodate canted intake valves of large diameter, to enhance swirl. The higher revs thus attainable, would make this a real winner. Torque, power, revs, smoothness, and best of all , that sound of a 16258374 firing order !!

I'm a sucker for a straight eight, especially when manufactured by Rolls Royce. The B80 series were great looking, especially in road going form with quad SU carbs on them. They sound fantastic too, so damned smooth. The Hudson Straight eight flat head is a pretty cool engine too. I love the Commodore, great looking and a great sound also. In fact, what am I talking about, all these engines, and the cars they're fitted in are pretty amazing. The Mercedes engine, for one, capable of producing up to 640bhp in the mid thirties, is nothing short of incredible.

Yet another absorbing and well-researched video from VisioRacer. Was especially interested by the Lanchester, never knew they had a straight-8. The company was an English car-manufacturing pioneer, making its first model in 1895. The horsepower figure mentioned, 30 HP, refers to its RAC (Royal Automobile Club) Rating, a calculation based on engine measurements, not power. It formed the basis for the UK's taxation on cars; the higher the number, the higher the tax.

In the 60's my dad had a Kaiser strait eight. Big station wagon. It was old.

Would make a great light and heavy duty truck engine (gas). I think it would bring the long hood look of a big rig styling wise as well. Could be engineered for low rpm torque or high rpm application across displacements as well.

That lanchester has a distributor going through the valve cover. The tach also swings the needle down, that was unexpected movement.

Oh there are 2 distributors, one on top and one on the side. Spark plugs on both sides of the engine.

Check out the Duesenberg straight eights of the 30s. It was a Lycoming aircraft engine with dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder. Many of them were supercharged, and produced more than enough power to propel a 6000 pound super luxury car to well over 100 mph. In the THIRTIES!
