i have been researching RVs, to buy one, to pick the best and I'm not buying for myself, in a couple years a couple mos. ago I stumbled across this Amazing thing...Tiny homes!! so I have completely decided on a tiny home, The RV Idea is no more I've watched many of these tiny homes channels, watched them designed and then built, I'm totally blown away, I am really in love with your homes!!

Me too, though I don't think they replace an RV. Tiny homes strike me as much more suited to putting somewhere for years at a time, if not permanently.

It's more a new category with overlap in multiple traditional classifications... Tiny Houses basically cover the entire spectrum from mobile to foundation built homes... The ones on wheels are just presently the most popular because they get around most of the zoning laws that have yet to accept Tiny Houses as valid full time living homes. However, pay close attention to the insurance and other concerns... Since it's a new category that has yet to get widespread acceptance, it means it will be hard to get financing, insurance, and legal recognition even if you place it on land you own, depending on the zoning laws where you live... Best bet is to find places where they're establishing Tiny House communities but otherwise you may have to be prepared to move someplace other than where you originally planned if the zoning laws don't allow it... HOA's, etc should be avoided like the plague as it's usually other people that make living Tiny hard. So anything that will require dealing with other people will likely make living in a TH in that area all but impossible... Zoning, permits, land costs, paying taxes on the land, etc. can quickly add up as well and easily cost more than the Tiny House as another consideration... So don't just consider the cost of the house alone... Though, much of this would still be true with a RV... They're not meant to be lived in full time by their nature and thus many full time RV'ers are doing so illegally... So we would be in good company, especially as it's estimated that there is about a million RV's out there, with 5-10 thousand TH's so far... Eventually, there will be enough pressure to get the laws changed but it's going to take awhile... So keep in mind you'll be an early adopter... Companies like ITH will be helping to make those changes... So that's another reason to consider this company to do your TH...

I think it will be very hard to get laws changed, as HOA's are very unlikely to budge and counties will always want their taxes, or may just be disinterested in bucking the restrictive systems already put in place. As another comment I read said, Tiny Home builders themselves are going to have to be politically active, showing up to city council meetings, lobbying just like everyone else does, etc. There could just as easily be a reaction against tiny homes that makes them less popular with county tax boards and potential buyers alike, as one that works in favor of builders and buyers. The battle is a long way from won or even fully engaged at this point. I actually feel a bit nervous for some of the people buying and hope they can all work it out successfully wherever they live.

Experience will vary but there has been some progress... The International Builders code was successfully amended recently, it only applies to Tiny Houses on foundations and isn't comprehensive yet but it's a step in the right direction... Certain states have already started experimenting with allowing Tiny House communities and amending local zoning laws to be more accommodating... Accessory housing is where it's progressing the most right now with higher demand to make them legal from all parts of the market... Thus the nickname of In-Law suite, etc. The trend of using accessory dwellings as offices, social interaction areas, etc. helps apply that pressure... While housing demand is only going up and whether those in charge like it or not they're going to have to start entertaining non-traditional solutions. But you're right that we're a long way from a real solution... Some places will actually go in the opposite direction before they come back to where most people would want it... California is one of the iffy places, for example, and it doesn't help they have issues with things like drug dealers using RV's and thus casting a negative image on all mobile homes in certain neighborhoods. Some people are getting wise to the fact that traditional housing is no longer a guaranteed investment and housing can depreciate and won't always appreciate but it's still a mindset that is part of the barrier to alternative housing as other people still get in the way because of their own concerns and it's not just the government with taxes, etc. The government may find alternative ways to tax, though, and that will make that part of the opposition easier to get around. But yeah, right now it's best to keep track of the local laws and practices... Even things like requirements for things like Septic tanks before you can even get a builders permit or permission to put anything on land, etc. are factors to consider and it's not going to get simpler any time sooner but we can take solace in that it's a growing movement and is converging with others to provide a majority opinion that it should happen at some point...

I hope things get much better, and as quickly as possible. I can't help but think that many people will find their best option is treating their tiny house like an RV and parking it behind somebody else's house and just paying them some rent. Fewest problems to deal with that way. The problem is, it's probably a small minority of people who have that option. When the best option is one that is so unlikely, the tiny house movement might have some problems growing.

they close down schools and business in Tennessee for a rain storm? lol its just kinda weird, I'm from Maine, we have gotten stammered on with numerous, back to back to back huge snow storms. I'm not sure if you've been up here... but we were getting 17-22 inches, this was literally every 24-30 hours, these were different storm systems... my car was missing, buried in that much snow! so much snow i could not believe my eyes.. but it's Maine and the school dept. business, well nothing will close! it was so bad this last few weeks, all of February, i was actually pissed they didn't cancel schools. well... it is what it is... but I'm telling you Sir, I'll take that rain over this crap, all day long!! 😂

Love your videos, Randy, keep it up. Starting off with a rambling lecture is a bit intense so I skipped ahead after a few minutes to where you were really doing something. And as I said in a comment below, I hope you are keeping your insurance up. You're one slip and fall or electrocution away from losing your business.

It does strike me as odd, though. Some of their lumber was indeed in the water. I hope they can get their warehouse space fixed up. Porta potties instead of toilets, hand-held lamps instead of lights, using umbrellas indoors, gigantic (and dangerous) puddles ... well, we all have to start from somewhere. I hope he keeps his insurance up though. He's only one slip and fall or electrocution from losing his business.

Yeah, it can cost millions to set up your own factory... Paying for the permits, certifications, land, building construction, equipment, etc. With the low profit margin he's working with that's going to take a lot of Tiny Houses before he gets there... So he's making do with the rented space he's got now... The weather they've been having probably didn't help that roof any either but they'll probably do some repairs once it stops raining long enough and any damaged wood can go into Lucifer ;-p Besides, I've seen other builders who didn't even have a building to work in... It's mainly those that come from traditional building and already have an established company that have their own facilities... Timbercraft, for example, is a major lumber company that now also makes some Tiny Houses. While a well known builder like Zyl Vardo works on his farm around his home workshop... Mind, those less established tend to be more artistic and more willing to do whatever the customer wants... While the company minded builders tend to treat it like a mass production assembly line and you can only choose between preset options... So where they're at now isn't necessarily a bad thing... Depending on what kind of TH you want...
