I had a similar thing many years ago with a mate and that was just standard shopping in the city. They'd only eat at McDonalds while I'll go most places - except there. If they weren't interested in a shop, they'd hang over my shoulder making it very clear. In the end I simply refused to go with them and went on my own. As you say, so much better.

The V&A is a museum of applied arts, design etc, so it’s very different from the British Museum, which is more of a historical museum, with lots of really ancient stuff. If you haven’t been there you should certainly go. Another commenter mentioned the Wallace Collection, which is decorative arts plus lots of paintings. It’s jaw-droppingly spectacular.
@Jay-Kay-Buwembo2 ай бұрын
V&A has a lot in common with British Museum, permanent collections include a lot of art, craft, sculpture, ceramics etc from South Asia, East Asia and the middle east. Not to mention the Sculpture from the Mediterranean.

The V&A was recommended to me when I was last in London. I asked what was there, and it was told that it contained things that you would find in a house. I spent the entire day there, saw perhaps three quarters of it, and what was there? Things you would find in a house! But, as you saw, amazing things! I would go back there in a heartbeat.

The V&A is one of the world’s great museums. I went a couple of weeks ago, not having been for decades and was enthralled. Definitely somewhere that needs multiple visits. Don’t waste your time with the Science museum, which has been completely dumbed down and ruined. Glad you loved the V&A

The Casting Halls are awesome because Victorians went all over the world and took plaster casts of the most amazing statuary all over the world. You can see the best staues here, all in one place. And some of those original statues have been destroyed, so the museum has preserved what the host countries did not.
@wrd7772 ай бұрын
The V&A is called a "Museum of Applied Arts", as opposed to a "Museum of Pure Arts" like the National Gallery. Incidentally, it has arguably the world's best collection of oriental carpets. The big one under glass, the Ardebil Carpet, has been described as the world's most valuable work of art because, if it came on the market, every country in the Middle East would be competing for it.

It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site all easily accessible via a 10-15 minute train ride from London Bridge, or better still via a River Bus. You have the Royal Park with its stunning views of London, the Royal Observatory and Planetarium. Along the river you have The National Maritime Museum, Queens House, Cutty Sark Tea Clipper and the Old Royal Naval College which is constantly used as an historic filming location. Then of course there is the Market.

So much better to do these things on your own, then you're not being distracted, or feeling pressure to rush. Hope things are getting easier.

I check online for exhibitions in museums of the US and sometimes drive 2-3 hours to enjoy them. Sometimes I meet up with distant friends there, or, if not, I enjoy the solitary trip, listening to books or music on the way. I eat alone, and browse through the displays at my own pace, not having to keep track of a companion. No pressure. No big hurry. A nice day on my own terms, rather a rarity, all told.

The V&A was the first museum in the world to have its own cafe, the room you were in wes designed by E.J Poynter, a well known Victorian artist. William Morris's company designed another one of the dining rooms. The National Gallery is the other place I always make a beeline for.

Well Alana, I am a 72 yr old lady who loves, prefers and does a lot of SOLO travel joyfully! Why? Because of the freedom to go when, where and do what I like without having to consider or negotiate with anybody else! I value this freedom so much so that I actually find travelling with other people rather intrusive and impeding to my enjoyment of my travels and exploration! I interact a lot with other travellers who I meet/pass and move on, thus sharing a little of my time without taking too much of theirs! I have met a lot of interesting and very friendly strangers that way! Love solo travel in my retirement having spent decades travelling in large family group forever caring for others' needs largely at the expense of my own! Hence I don't do cruises and tour group travel as I would rather go HAPPY SOLO! ✌️

Memories are not going to be made sitting at home.

Anti recommendation - don't come to the isle of sheppey unaccompanied , not least because you have to catch the Sittingbourne to Sheerness train . The creators of the comedy series ' The Inbetweeners ' used to come to sheppey to write . They described the train ride as possibly the most dangerous one in England !?

The tapestries are kept in low light condition so the material does not get bleached by bright light. Wonderful old materials.

Huge brownie points for fighting down the anxiety and not only made the trip but filmed too...extra points for using your cutlery like a proper Brit, not sure how Canadians eat but Americans drive me mad at how they stab at their food like a toddler. Others have mentioned the date faux pas on the crucifixion so I won't but a tiny teeny point loss for, you didn't sleep bad, you slept badly..😊✌🇬🇧
