I’ve been sharing - word of mouth and telling them to YT or google ITH and of course what that stands for, even some outside of Dalton...Wish I.could get one here but Alaska would be a L-O-N-G drive, but beautifully scenic.

One note on having a gray water tank higher than the shower drain... Solution on boats and RV's is to use a drain pump... Just turn it on while taking a shower and it'll pump the drain to the tank... You just need enough clearance below to install the pump and piping, which should take up less space than placing the tank below and then lets you place the gray tank anywhere as you won't be limited by gravity based flow...

The reason for the slated bed is ventilation. These are often built in conversant vans.

How would you keep your water tank from freezing in winter?
@ZeoCyberG
@ZeoCyberG 7 жыл бұрын
Typically, three things... The tank and pipes can be insulated, the pipes and the tank can be heated (just needs to be kept above freezing), and if the water is constantly moving then it won't freeze... Alternatively, they can bury the tanks in the ground, below a few feet the ground remains an average temperature all year round... Same physics that made root cellars possible... as the ground acts as a thermal mass... Optionally, solar thermal panels could be attached and channel the heat of the sun into the tanks to help keep them warm in the winter... or they can integrate the system to the house heating system... Even a simple ducted heated air exchanger combined with insulation could easily keep the tanks above freezing... So there's a few options they could use or all of the above...

These guys run such a great, and entertaining, channel don't they? My plan... and so far it's just in my head, is to put all mechanicals on the tongue, including large vertical poly water tank up high for off-grid gravity effect (empty for travel)... the heavily insulated, modified mechanicals room will have in and out vents for warm air circulation in cold climes... just an idea... a note: I see private builders putting large flat tanks in the floor... I think that is a massive mistake if they plan on wintering in the North... the ground radiates cold and it's much harder to keep from freezing unless they have a skirt and warm air going down (or radiant pex)... just throwing a few ideas out there.

Henry, main reason to put tanks below are for your gray and black tanks... It's just that most engineer their plumbing to work with gravity, but as noted in my other comment there are drain pumps that can be used instead. If you're not using a composting toilet, you can still use a maserator and pump to locate your tanks in a more convenient location, but it could mean more long term maintenance and possibly energy costs for running those pumps if you don't have a power system that can handle much more than the lights... That said, tanks can be insulated and there are options like electrical heating tape that can be run along the piping and the tank to keep them from reaching freezing temperatures... As for the tongue, keep in mind you need enough room for turning radius while towing and you don't want anything sticking out enough to hit the tow vehicle when making those turns... So you may have to cantilever above where the tow vehicle would be to provide enough space for all your mechanicals... Weight distribution should optimally be 60/40 with most of the weight forward towards the tow vehicle but you have to be careful to not put more than 60% of the weight forward as then you can over balance and put too much load on the tow vehicle... Mind also the center of gravity... Not having tanks below and putting them high can make it top heavy and more likely to flip over...

ZeoCyberG hey, thanks very much… I appreciate the input… Yeah the dual purpose aspect to mounting all the mechanicals on the tongue is to also be more aerodynamic with a rounded nose… Thanks for all of your input… Very helpful

Randy or Amanda, At its highest interior point, How tall would a bottom and top loft space each be if you split the heights between the overall height? I'm 5-foot-none.
@ZeoCyberG
@ZeoCyberG 7 жыл бұрын
They've done lower lofts before, even reverse lofts... Only if you need to meet code would it be a issue, as then there's a minimum ceiling height of 6' 8" for living space, and 6' 4" for bathrooms, kitchens, etc. They normally do about 6' 8" and still get around 52" for the loft height... So, if they lower that to 6' 4" then it should give 4' 6-8" or about 4-6 inches short of your height... But you don't have to be bound by that and can set the height to whatever you want... The loft itself has no height requirements... It's just usually not suppose to be counted for total square footage for the house unless it's 5' or more in height... There's also some tricks, like a skylight provides a little extra headroom in the loft and can be placed right where you would want the most height... along with having a lower platform that cuts into the loft space and thus provides an area where you could stand... Below could be storage and thus not getting in the way of anything below... Or you can just have the stairs only go up part of the way and leave a remaining height platform that you can stand and enter the loft space... Btw, residential code stairs are one of the reasons why it's hard to get zoning acceptance because residential stairs have to be 3 feet wide and have full standing 7' height space all the way up the stairs, which wouldn't be possible in a Tiny House... But stairs that only go part of the way is one way around that... While changes are starting to be pushed to make exceptions for the stairs/ladders for loft access in Tiny Houses, at least in those counties and states that are starting to legalize tiny houses... There's also fifth wheel trailers... The cantilevered part can provide a space to put a bedroom with standing height and would only require a short run of stairs to reach... It also helps that fifth wheels are generally easier to tow too... So those are some of your options and things to consider... At least with sticking to Tiny Houses On Wheels (THOWs)... Tiny Houses on foundations can be two story as they generally have a less strict height requirement of around 18' or more, depending on local zoning rules... and the house may also be able to offer a basement or just lowered into the ground to provide more interior height space to get around even that height restriction...

Why 9 feet wide? When that requires you to have a permit everywhere you go? I could be mistaken, but I believe 8 1/2 feet plus a little bit extra for essential hand holds and emergency equip is all that is allowed in all 50 states
@ZeoCyberG
@ZeoCyberG 7 жыл бұрын
8' 6" is the federal legal width limit, which applies to the nations highways... Regular roads follow more strict local rules... Same with height... So vehicles that push the limit, like say a Class A RV, are usually limited to traveling within a 10 mile radius of the highway... Though that may vary from state to state... Most of the houses they build are just below the limit, giving them some leeway for things like a tiny bit of roof overhang, exterior lights, and/or gutters (sometimes may require removal when moving if not included in that leeway)... But not everyone intends to move their tiny house very often... So wide load sticker and moving permit is fine for them and they benefit by a larger and more flexible floor plan... While others may opt for slide outs or fold outs or other method of adding a little more space once parked...

Thanks very much! Do you know what is involved in getting a wide load sticker? I totally agree that an extra foot is YUGE when it comes to interior space... I'm looking into tubular steel framing for the exterior (not metal studs) as well as for any lofts, to provide for an upper loft slide as well... just ideas... also looking into vertical "slide-ups" so a loft can turn into a full height room, giving full door access to the adjacent flat roof as yet another deck/rainwater collector... insulation and water proofing is the challenge there... just in my head so far :)
@Henry-cy2kk
@Henry-cy2kk 7 жыл бұрын
I also wonder that, if I get a wide load sticker for one state and then want to travel through other states... is that sticker "federal" so that it applies for the whole trip?
@ZeoCyberG
@ZeoCyberG 7 жыл бұрын
The sticker is easy to get, it's basically just a sign you put on to show you're an oversized load and that helps warn anyone on the road to give you a wide birth... The permits are state by state... You basically need to plan your route and then give it to the local authorities for the route you plan on going through and they will have to authorize it... It's to make sure that the roads you're going over will be rated for the weight and there's nothing in the path that would be an obvious danger... If there's a problem they'll suggest alternate routes until a route is agreed upon... The permit is usually for a few days, so there's a time limit once you get the permit(s), though you can get a one year permit if you're a commercial mover and specific rules can vary a bit per state... Like you may also be required to have an escort to clear the road ahead and behind you... But if you hire a moving company this will usually be taken care of and that will usually add the benefit of professional driver and company insurance in case anything happens along the way...
