The apple harvest begins in September in the Okanagan Valley. Seasoned fruit pickers transition from harvesting cherries to picking apples. In this short documentary, the workers reflect on the spirituality of the food cycle and its impact on the community. The workers ponder how we contribute as humans to our surroundings - in society, the global food system, and local ecosystem.
‘Cream of the Crop’ is a CBC Creator Network series that highlights nine individuals in the trade of growing, picking and packing fruit in the Okanagan Valley. For many, picking fruit provides a seasonal livelihood. It can be a rite of passage, an adventure or a life-long vocation. For others, the income is a necessity to support their families outside of Canada. The workers detail their experiences and perspectives in this a “day-in-the-life” look at a small-scale agriculture operation.
