Dog training with a leash reactive or aggressive dog has many layers. Training a small aggressive dog can be even harder. Tom Davis works with a terrier on leash aggression.

Such a great video. I really appreciate when we see small dog sessions. We foster small dogs through a rescue and when we go to the dog park, often, most people think its OK to have a small dog jumping and barking. But, honestly, its not. Its not good for the dog, the owner or anyone else in the park. Regardless of size, all dogs need guidance, leadership and training. This video is just that. Thank you.

Terriers are some of my favorite dogs to train because while they have such an intensity all across the board that can make it very hard to work through (high pain tolerance, hyper fixation, etc), once you break through with them its like all the switches are firing at such a quick rate. They live for work and LOVE structure, in fact, they thrive on it. I love working with them.

An amazing video! I’m don’t see small, aggressive dogs very often so this level of reactivity was really surprising, about a ferocious ankle biter! How impressive that Henry’s owners and rescuers persisted in trying to give him a better life by bringing him to Tom. Using vibration right from the start to interrupt the reactivity was another surprise I didn’t see coming and wow, did that ever work well! Kudos to Tom for thinking outside the training box and many more kudos to these dedicated owners. This is a very satisfying turnaround to watch. NBDA 😊

That dog is absolutely adorable. Small dogs can be wonderful. If they are just trained. These guys got this dog and trained. But now they’ve worked with him and that’s great. He probably would not have had to be a rescue if the first people would’ve trained him.

There isn't one small dog in this area that the owner has spent the time to train. They cause the most problems especially when they are allowed off leash which is almost constantly. Had very negative affect on my GSD. NOW he will go after them and I know the outcome will not be good. This was a great vid addressing this issue, bravo to you guys!

This is exactly it. Small dogs get away with murder, almost literally, and everyone will be 'oh well, that's just a small dog, so it's fine'. Until the larger dog who gets frustrated by them reacts.....
@PickleMcTavish
@PickleMcTavish Ай бұрын
@@EvelineUK Yes! I have had so many little dogs come and have a go at my GSD's and the owners invariably say "oh, its because... your dog is on a lead" or "...they don't like big dogs" or (the routine) "a GSD attacked them once and now they don't like them"... there's always an excuse for the fact that their little dog is out of control and being aggressive in my dogs face - while MY dog is on the lead by my side! I've even had one (cockapoo) biting my dog and when I put my hand down to push it away, it bit right through and broke my finger! I was trying to save its life in case my dog decided he'd had enough and bit back. Some people even laugh when their little dog is attacking my huge one! I want to say "is it okay if I let him off now so he can have his turn?"

Ya, a video with a small dog, and a terrier no less! Many people think that because a dog is small it doesn't need to be trained properly. I especially liked the end of the video where you're showing the dog on the treadmill. I feel that so many behavioral issues are from a dog not getting enough physical and mental exercise.

I have a dog that has severe reactivity on the leash, almost identical to Henry, but with far more barking. I was feeling really dismayed when I bought a remote collar because It was like it didn't faze him at all. I have no idea why it didn't dawn on me to hold the button on the pager, but it is definitely something I'm excited to try out. Thank you so much for all of your videos and education Tom!

What a brilliant little dog, I love working with terriers! One thing I have observed, with leash reactive dogs like this, using a head collar on them seems to massively raise the level of frustration and ‘fight’. I don’t like head collars for dogs anyway, their heads aren’t designed for it and it isn’t comfortable, but I think it’s actually counter productive in this situation. Unfortunately a lot of people go for them these days.

Terriers are so tough man. They have such a great working prey drive. People get them and forget they are a working dog bred with purpose and function in mind. That excel in everything from obedience, scent work, dog diving, agility, tricks, to search and rescue. They are a big dog in a small body, they also aren't to be confused with companion breeds like Kings Charles Spaniels and Yorkshire terriers.

How do you feel about the 'discussion' Zak George is trying to have on his channel regarding balanced dog training, and how any correction would damage the dog long term? He of course has never dealt with an agression case, just a few pullers and a bit of barking.... I thought it was quite funny you used the same sponsor in a previous video ;)
@missmermaid6249
@missmermaid6249 Жыл бұрын
I used to watch Zak George when my dog was a puppy and I was trying to train her, and I worked with a trainer that believed that as well. I’m not criticizing them, to each their own, but it didn’t work for me, seemed painfully slow in progression. My puppy was leash reactive to other dogs and it scared me because I knew she was going go get much bigger and stronger. I was watching Tom’s videos and realized this was how I wanted to train my dog. I interviewed another trainer that worked with correction and not only was it working I then started feeling more confident and I saw a huge attitude/confidence change in my dog as she learned.

Balanced training is the only thing that's working for my insanely reactive dog. I tried 6 years of positive only training and he just was not getting it until we introduced a prong collar with the guidance of a balanced trainer. He is so much more calm and confident now. I am only seeing positives from a balanced approach. I feel like Zak is thinking of e collars and prong collars as violent tools, and they are not so long as you implement them properly.

My dog been on a wireless fence collar for when we let her outside. So, whenever I try to use the training collar on the lowest setting she acts scared and won’t respond to the command. With the setting that low is it the wireless fence contributing to this or her just not being familiar with the stimulation? Thanks!

You have to increase the level.. Whatever is stimulating him more than the vibration is more important & stimulating which is why it isn't working. Find his working level than +10 for anything over stimulating like other dogs and people for example.

People don’t understand that small dogs, terriers in particular, need the same training as a big dog. Terriers were bred to hunt, kill, bark, and chase. Other dogs were as well of course, but the terrier mixes tend to exhibit this behavior more. Think about the dog you want to get, and how much time and training they will need, before you get them. I am glad these owners came to you to help save their dog. His mental state is so much better after just a weekend in the right hands.

I love ALL dogs (actually all mamals lol). We have had rotties since 96. Have tried to socialize all we can and also made sure that we could always have people over and they know how to behave. Now, they behave, but they always watch and I have seen a few of ours be friendly, but if you make sudden movements, they normally would put themselves between us and whoever was over. But they never "went after" a person for no reason. The funny thing is people like this say their dog "nipped" 4 people. If one of mine did that, animal control would leave a vapor trail getting to my house lol. That little fella just needs boundaries and consistency, but people think that cause its a little fella, that means they can just wait. I will never understand that way of thinking. Just sets that baby up for failure one day
