I have that kind of dog! His breed is reactive and anxious by nature. I had to be very deliberate in training him to be on a leash. He was so bad at it for soooo long. Luckily, I had the time to dedicate to acclimating him to his walking path and the other dogs in my neighborhood. His littermate was not as lucky, and that boy is a bit of a wreck (no one's fault tho): very scared and very vocal about his fears. I'm so glad Taj's owners got the guidance they needed because this breed of dog pays it back in affection, tenfold.

I have a question about dog behaviour, so what I've seen is that we use food to reward dog for a good behaviour while training, as time goes we don't give the food in same frequency, we usually just say "Good dog" or something. So how does that training stick with them and not that "im behaving well and still he's not rewarding me" and then become agitated, how does this work? Thank you
@SvetaFromUkraine Жыл бұрын
From my understanding (I'm a dog groomer and vet tech) the frustration comes from the change in reward, from a high value reward (like a treat) to a lower value reward ("good dog"). The dog has come to expect a high value reward, does not receive what they anticipated, and may act out in frustration ("this isn't what I expected, wtf mom, I'm not gonna do that, it's not worth it for me"). The key is balancing high value reward with low value reward so that they don't know exactly what to expect each time, so when it is a high value reward, they get extra excited about it. The important part is slowly phasing out the high value reward, while still offering it on occasion. So the dog knows the possibility of a high value reward is always there, but they can't decode the frequency.

I couldn't even watch this because it pisses me off too much. I've had family pull this crap before and it ended in the dog being put down. Similar to this dog with old people, not used to dogs. I asked them what possessed then to choose that dog? It wasn't the dogs fault! But I asked them, if you wanted to help.out a person down on their luck. Would you go behind a bar and pick up a past out, ex-bikie, drug addiction as your place to start? The same line would get trailed out each time, "oh, he's a big cuddle bug WHEN HE'S ALONE WITH US AT HOME"!!! FFS! They're so clueless and it really gets to me that people's stupidity, ignorance, and nievity ultimately puts the dog in a terrible position when it has no say what so ever in it. He would get very skittish and lash out when kids were around. There were 12 kids under 5 in the family at the time. Similar to this dog. Very big, powerful and smart but riddled with anxiety. Looked like a lion killer but as gentle as a teddy bear when he felt safe. It just triggers me so bad when these people take something on they are not only SOOO far out of there depth on. They often have no real interest in learning or putting in the work. At least these 2 are trying having seemed help I guess.

Goodness, my dog Kahoe that I found here at the base of a mountain in Hawaii looks EXACTLY like this dog, and with the exact same issues. I spent 2700 here on a 10 day immersion camp where they took him from me to help with the pulling but it didn't do anything even with me continuing on with the training and using the e-collar and everything the pulling is scary at times, because he is all muscle and if im not constantly braced for the impact of when he inevitably sees something he wants to react to I am terrified of either losing him or my arm, or both. I am at a loss, I sit out there every day walking back and forth trying to practice heel with the e-collar like i was taught and I'm just missing something, I feel so defeated and we only have one more lesson together this coming week.
@juliekagel3785 Жыл бұрын
It doesn't sound like rhe E collar alone is enough of a tool for him to know a walk is work. Have to practice the walk too thats when the strude picks up. Maybe add a gentle leader or a pinch hermspringer collar
@RedErin Жыл бұрын
What I’ve done that has worked with my dogs is to get ahead of their reactions. I look ahead, I listen, almost like driving and watching for cross traffic or changing lights. Instead of that surprise reaction from my dog, I have already seen another dog approaching and tightened up the leash close to me and talk with the key words we practice (stay with me, heel, things like that that focus the dog on me instead of the distraction). Sometimes I step aside with my dog, have her sit, and we watch the other dog walk on by. I couldn’t pay anyone to have trained my dogs, they have all had to learn how to operate with me and follow my lead. It’s a lot of consistent daily work, not a 10 day fix. All dogs need lots of repetition because they will keep testing to ask you what they can get away with. My corgi mix never stopped thinking that as long as I wasn’t looking she could do what she pleased, so I developed a short whistle pattern so she’d know I had my attention on her - all dogs are different like this and it’s the time spent with them where you figure out how their mind processes information and how long it takes.

My dog is like this as well. I understand it can be very very overwhelming. It seems like I have been on a uphill battle with him between the reactivity/anxiety/pulling/potty issues/nausea in the car and the list goes on. I adopted him and the adoption agency told me he was well socialised his so well behaved potty trained etc. . . had I known about this things im not sure if I would have adopted him. The initial days I would literally just cry from being frustrated and overwhelmed. We have come a long way since I got him he behaves beautifully now but it wasn't easy you must be able to dedicate a lot of time, money and effort. I used to think how can someone rehome a dog etc but I understand once it happened to me. Besides all the time to put in, the amount of money I have spent on him is insane from canine behaviorists, special leads collars, enrichment, all sort tools to help him, booking days off work its a lot. I never knew it could be this bad because our previous dog was just a dream to be around.

@juliamagnusson8670 Жыл бұрын
The prong collar is used for communication. No tool are supposed to fix pulling automatically. Tools are there to help make it easier to train & communicate with your dog. But you have to do a lot of training like you're seeing on Tom's videos. Teach a heel inside with no distractions and slowly add more distractions as the dog gets better at the command. Then you do it outside with no distractions and slowly move on to more distracting environments. Watch Tom's older videos where he shows more of the progress or watch his heel tutorials
