I personally discovered Aurora during the pandemic, when I did a very deep dive into music….I have sung in choirs since childhood. This was one of the first pieces I heard and I was absolutely gobsmacked. I was also brought to tears. True beauty fills the heart with so much feeling that it has to have an outlet. And that outlet is often tears. I am capture by the crystalline purity of her voice. The absence of much vibrato is reminiscent of a young boy soprano, which to me, is the purest vocal sound. You are correct: The “eh-ya” chant at the end is, to me, innately spiritual and expresses human emotion at a very deep level. Being of Northern European, Celtic descent, that kind of chanting pierces my heart. You can experience this even further in her live collaboration with the group Wadruna, which is available on KZbin. Wadruna is one of the many groups in Northern Europe and Britain who are trying to emulate and recapture the ancient music of their ancestors. I don’t know you well, but I do know you are a devout Christian. I do not know how open you are to hearing sacred music from other times and cultures.. the song/chant that Aurora does with Wadruna is a funereal piece……bidding farewell to a friend and wishing him “Godspeed” on his journey to the afterlife. It was the piece of music which introduced me to Aurora, and to me, it is very powerful and moving. It is easily found by searching for Aurora and Wadruna.

Fantastic reaction! This entire concert is magical, from start to finish, but this is certainly one of the highlights. Vocalizations are a big part of Aurora's repertoire, and perhaps never better displayed than here. I can't think of anyone better at conveying emotions, both happy and sad, than Aurora, and I think it's because she's so authentic. It's not an act, but it's coming right from her heart. In the fantastic HAIK documentary, Aurora said that this song is very important to her. She was going through a phase, where she was only seeing the bad in the world, and she wrote this song to get it out of her system. It's still an important song to her, to this day. The backup vocals in the third verse are from her longtime backup singer/musician/friend Silja Sol. Unfortunately, she doesn't get a lot of screen time in this concert, but if you watch "It Happened Quiet" live at The Current, she reallly gets a chance to shine, and you'll see just how great they are together. It's an acoustic session, with nobody else but those two, and it's one of Aurora's most popular performances. And as far as Nordic tradition, perhaps the best example of that, at least with Aurora, is "Helvegan" from Wardruna, featuring Aurora. It's a fantastic live performance, with a very, very old school, traditional vibe.

In 1996, a gunman entered Dunblane Primary School in Scotland and shot dead 16 Primary 1 pupils (all 5 year old children in their very first year of school) and their teacher. A memorial stone to the victims of this horrendous act lies within Dunblane Cathedral - and when I visited the Cathedral recently and saw the memorial stone, this was the song that ran through my head. @@teckreactions Can you imagine the application for this concert in the cathedral was initially denied! "Olavsfestdagene" which is a church and cultural festival in Trondheim Norway booked the cathedral for the concert, but the church administration denied the application because they thought the concert did not meet the criteria for what can be allowed in the church. In the guidelines for approving, it is stated that events in the church should provide room for wonder, faith and hope. They apparently never listened to Aurora's music... Even a local rock band called "Motorpsycho" had been allowed to play there. The festival appealed the case to the parish council, and it was unanimously approved.

What is in the water in Norway? And in the Scandinavian area in general? The female singers I have heard (Aurora, Eivor, Silja and others), all have such a pure clarity to their voices…..like an ice-cold stream. Is it a lack of vibrato? Is it genetic or cultural? I don’t know. It is not a “warm” vocal sound, but rather pure and sharp……..I picture forests covered in snow and freezing mountain brooks…,and ones breath crystallizing on the cold air.

When you review ”Lucky” at the same venue. And I know you will lol. That song is about the struggles one has taking their own life. Going through that journey and coming out the other side. Being amongst a crowd with no one knowing how lucky the person is that they are still alive. I’m sure you will get to It Happened Quiet, as well. the song she said was for the thousands of voices that go on unheard dealing with the struggle of S* abuse. Everyone of her songs have deep meaning. She is an unapologetic writer. Her songs are for all of those who cannot write them themselves. This was a Christmas concert. There was a small pre-interview at the beginning of this concert, where she reaches out to those who might not be in the Christmas spirit. Not everyone is filled with Christmas spirit whether it be through family loss, or because that person is alone etc., and it’s important not to forget them. Although I’m not politically aligned with AURORA as she very ‘progressive’. I believe her spirit is pure. And I love her all the same. ❤

You should really treat yourself, by spending 4 minutes watching this same song again privately, but the a cappella version from March 2016 called Through The Eyes Of A Child - Stripped Vevo UK Lift, on her main channel. It is just as beautiful as this one, in my opinion, but in a different way, and she is doing amazing harmonies with her band members. Next you should watch "It Happened Quiet" Live at The Current. That song is also beautiful in Nidarosdomen, which was the very first live performance of it, but the acoustic version at The Current is something very special, almost magical. I just watched her live in Oslo ~1.5 weeks ago for the first time in 1.5 years, and during the first song my tears also just ran by themselves, because it was so beautiful. And it was the perfect song for it, her song called "The River", where she sings: "You can cry...." She wrote the song when she learned 73% of suicides is done by men, and she thinks it is because men is not "allowed" to cry in todays society.

I would not be surprised if Aurora's vocalizations weren't influenced by Swedish Kulning (cattle calling) or Sami Joik singing, because Aurora has stated that she's always felt close to indigenous cultures. Aurora's band all contribute backup vocals, but here she has a female backup singer named Silja Sol who you can briefly hear adding harmony vocals before the male choir joins in. I would recommend "Lucky" from the same concert: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d563mqSIZ8SJd9k, or watch the whole concert if you are willing to do a long video:kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYGbn4Khlr1orbc. The full concert has subtitles (not for song lyrics, just for the parts where she speak Norwegian). The full concert will be one of the most rewarding hours you can spend.

I would be very surprised if Aurora was influenced by Swedish kulning. Kauking is a Norwegian style of singing/yelling that includes a number of formalised styles like hjaling, laling, hujing and for particular usages such as sauelokk (sheep-call), geitelokk (goat-call) and KULOKK (cow-call). Of all this forms, mainly kulokk exist also in Sweden under the name "Kulning" (mainly in the former Norwegian territories). The style of kauking was probably developed (or stylized) in the Norwegian mountains as it lends itself to communication over long distance with the use of natural harmonies and inflections and was used for exactly that purpose in addition to calling for animals. So why would she be inspired by Swedish kulning, when Norway has such a much richer tradition itself?

@@BrimirMereally interesting…….lokk must mean “call”, yes? I’m interested in languages and their development over time. Norwegian has influenced English for sure, through conquest and settlement.. “Ku” I assume is “cow”. And “geite “ is “goat? Cool.
@BrimirMe9 ай бұрын
@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 Yes, and sau is sheep. In this context lokk typically translates to call, but in common use it means "to lure/entice". It's probably derived from a proto-germanic *lukkōną with much the same meaning, which has possible cognates in german to lûgen/locken and english lie and/or lock (as in caught/trapped/fastened).

That entire concert is fantastic. Would make great content for many videos to come. I definitely recommended you start with her early stuff like that concert. She does not personally copyright strike reactors for any of her stuff. Her and her mother both watch them frequently. With the exception of a few collaborations that other artists have some rights to.

You are quite correct that she is inspired by Scandinavian folk music. The wordless part where the choir comes in sounds a bit like the joik of the Sami people. The joik is almost always wordless, and it is both a noun and a verb. You joik someone or something when you sing. I'm not sure if this was her intention, but I can imagine her joiking the child in the second part of the song. As for the next song, I don't know her catalog all too well, but she's made a very special cover of Bowie's Life on Mars. Just her and a Fender Rhodes, magical! You should also watch some interview with her. She's very special, and has a great sense of humor!

Since you liked this you might also liked the "stripped down version" its just her and some back ground singers singing the same song but the sound quality or design is amazing. I like both versions for different reasons.

In the beginning of the Nidarosdomen concert video (the full one), you'll hear her explain the perspective with which she went into that concert. It makes all the songs you hear that much more moving to know where her heart was at. It was Christmastime and she was singing for those who experience grief, loneliness etc, during the holidays if I remember correctly. It may be worth doing the whole concert, even if in installments.

Followed AURORA (no, I'm not shouting, it's how she wants her name credited!) since 2017. She's unique. She reminds me of Elizabeth Fraser from The Cocteau Twins.She comes from a musical. She started playing the piano at 5. She composed and arranged 'Runaway' at the age of 11. She writes all her material and directs her own videos in collaboration with a long-time friend. Her sister makes all her outfits for the videos. She's a classically trained dancer as well. She's a national treasure in Norway. My favourite AURORA songs are Black Water Lilies, I Went Too Far, The M*rder Song, Runaway and Queendom. YT has a few live concerts of hers. One was held in a Norwegian forest mid-winter with lanterns and Reindeer, just magical. Another was in a Cathedral. There are also a few Capella songs too. Watch them as she's mesmerising, quirky and unique. She totally immerses herself in the lyrics and music, unaware of the audience in front of her. It's just her and the music at that particular point in time. .....and remember, everyone is welcome in AURORA's 'Queendom!

Although it is not a song which she herself wrote, Aurora’s cover of the song Teardrop, is IMO, one of the best in showcasing her incredible vocal control. It is rare for Western singers, especially those not trained, to be able to use Eastern modes, which, as you know, contain quarter-interval scales. Aurora seems to be able to do this so naturally.

Aurora has much more sad songs if you know her history. KZbin doesn't like us posting comments about some of the events like what happened in Norway in 2011 where she lost one of 3 friends in various events in her life. But the song "Little Boy in the Grass" is about that event. Also "Lucky" is related to some of those events.
