I was just searching for "incubus album review" and somehow ended up here :). Man, you are really putting in quite some effort and emotional connections to all the Tracks, the way you talk about all the albums seems damn profound. Also you're awesome in making your point. I'm listening to all the stuff Incubus put out for the last ~16 or even more years and know every song by guitar riff and name ^^. Crow Left of the Murder, watered down? That album has by far their most raucous riffs and Mike’s craziest playing. The solo on “Pistola” is savage, and Made for TV Movie and Here in My Room are some of their most sonically spectacular tunes in their entire catalog. No disrespect but we have very different definitions of watered down. That album has so much fearlessness and intensity in it. Also, Warning is one of their best songs imho. We have very different tastes in this band but I guess that’s the beauty of music lol

Make Yourself (100,000,000,00/10) To me personally, it all comes down to Mike Einziger's wizardry of manipulation of the guitar on the MYS and MV albums with the use of many effects pedals, most notable, that phaser/flanger sound mixed with the heavy dropped D sound, additionally the fact he predominantly used PRS Hollowbody guitars with MESA/BOOGIE Amps, it just equated in a beautifully epic sound, I don't know, there's just something that catches me with Mikes random riffs throughout different songs on both the Make Yourself and Morning View Albums, and especially the bridges in songs such as Nowhere Fast and Circles and Have You Ever. There's just something about those 2 albums (MYS & MV) particularly that has a melodic ambience, trippy out of this world type vibe that gives me chills down my spine, raises the hair on the back of my neck and gives me goosebumps. Then there's Brandon Boyd's intellectual lyrics and his vocal range is amazing and fits perfectly wether he sings fast or slow or high or low, Brandon Boyd is very talented indeed, oh and Dirk Lance on the bass, damn he was full of magic too, such gritty loud sounds with catchy riffs that just isn't in incubus anymore unfortunately. Don't get me wrong, Ben is a very talented bass player but he doesn't play to my ear holes desire, and then there's DJ Kilmore and his mastery of scratching vinyl, he's amazing on the turntables and produces very unique organic sounds that set a spacey tone, and Jose on the drums, just fantastic with his off beat rhythms and musicianship in relation to the rest of the band as they all play and flow together so seamlessly. Incubus are my favourite band of all time, there's no runner up. I have been listening to them ever since I was a teenager in high school back in the early/mid 00's and I still listen to them regularly to this day. I wish their newer stuff was like their old stuff but we can't have our cake and eat it too, can we?

Science had the best of all worlds with hard hitting incubus to the more chill love songs like deep inside and antigravity. None of the more current love songs could rival antigravity. Echo was a really good one in morning view but probably one of the last great ones. Even hard hitting songs from Science like a Certain Shade of green translated really well in acoustic mode. I think most people that are placing Science so far down on the list were probably turned off for it being relatively heavier to their other albums, but in my opinion the song writing and music composition was really strong and well put together. Mike Einziger is really the star on the newer stuff, considering Brandon's voice is not as strong as it used to be. Also I think there may have line up changes because the bass was a lot funkier and groovier in earlier albums as well as DJ Lyfe was an essential part in Incubus uniqueness.

The order of my list has changed a lot since I first heard every album at least once. S.C.I.E.N.C.E. was my favorite back then and it still is, that hasn't changed at all and I don't think it will. With A Crow Left of the Murder is a different story, when I first heard it I thought it was good, just good; but recently the more I play it, the more I fall in love with it, that's why it passed from 7th place to 3rd. I put Morning View there because even when is a great album (I love hearing it while staring at the sea and standing on the sand) i don't enjoy a lot every song of it, I find myself skiping the songs Have You Ever and Under My Umbrella most of the times that I want to hear the full album, don't get me wrong, both are good songs but they haven't done a click with me. For any other album I haven't mention, this is not the case. Every Incubus album is awesome, they have music to listen to in every type of moment I can think of. Because of that, they are one of my favorite bands. I don't know how much time I am going to live but if I can listen to Incubus during this existance, then every phase of it will be easier.

@@arkoverload Of course, that versatility is unique! One thing i forgot to mention is that i consider every member of the band as one of my favorite players in they respective instrument. I love both Dirk's and Ben's styles, the imagination Mike puts into its playing style is just briliiant and Jose's style is what i think i love the most from incubus. In fact, S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and A Crow Left of the Murder are, in my opinion, the two albums where Jose displays more of his unique drum skills.

For more than a decade there hasn't been a rock album that would shake the music landscape. Maybe Tool new album could help with this, but the new generations are way more into other styles of music. Even other slow incubus songs are interesting or musically creative But that album was a pure snooze fest unfortunately, it reminded me of what cold play was trying to do at the time. Incubus is one of my top 10, maybe top 5 bands. Amazing, and actually quite underrated band. Certainly one of the best of this era in alternative rock. My top three is the same (maybe not the order) but, hard disagree on A Crow Left... It is such a unique record. I feel it kind of brought back some of the experimentation of Science. Sick Sad Little World is my favorite too, but i also LOVE Megalomaniac. Don't really care for Talk Shows either. I was impressed with what they did with the new bassist, as they lost such a great player. I love how much you geek out over Science. It was mindblowing for me too. What they did with the nu metal/funk metal sound still blows me away, nothing like any other band in 1997. I first heard Incubus on MTV with songs like Nice To Know You, Are You In and Drive but fell in love when i heard Science. I can see you like Deftones too. I saw them live last summer, was badass! Unfortunately without Stephen on guitar though... Do you happen to like 311 by any chance?

I am definitely in the minority when it comes to Crow, but I just can't get into it (believe me, I've tried). It's just not for me, but I'm happy to hear so many enjoy it!

#8 - 8 (hated this because I had huge expectations for it when Trust Fall side B (a lie, was never released) kept getting delayed because as Brandon said, "We kept getting better and better ideas", hmmm.. nah, it's subjectively bad from my perspective; I liked Nimble Bastard before production ruined it though. Terrible, terrible production on this album. I expected it to sound like an extension of Trust Fall Side A, which it wasn't) #7 - Fungus Amongus (good, but obviously terrible lyrically, decent instrumentation) #6 - If Not Now, When? (mostly pretty good, just not as good as prime Incubus) #5 - Light Grenades (great, streamlined version of Crow Left of the Murder, interesting how literally every song switches back and forth between extremely heavy and soft to an almost abrupt degree (except for the stretch from tracks #7-9), [for example, Love Hurts (ballad) -> Light Grenades (title track - heaviest song on the album) -> Earth to Bella (part 1) [yet another soft ballad - maybe the softest on the album], liked it way more than Crow Left of the Murder at first, but it flipped awhile after that grew on me a crapton) This is where it gets pretty hard, tbh, I love #1-4 a lot. #4 - A Crow Left of the Murder (actually like pretty much everything you hate about this album [despite the fact I hated it so much when I first listened to it due to the contrast from Morning View, it grew on me a heck of a lot after repeated listens though] I like about it - Einziger was quoted as saying it would be "enjoyed by fans [more] retrospectively" upon release - prophetic words - particularly concerning the albums released in the next decade - more especially the later half of the decade #3 - Morning View (honestly almost feel like this could be #1 some days. freaking amazing album. the contrasts feel a bit more organic compared to light grenades. everything about this album feels so organic and naturally developed over time. Some of their strongest writing came off this album. Almost ironic considering many critics of the time thought it was pandering to their fanbase - huh. This is where they feel most natural - its not about popularity, this is genuinely what they crafted more naturally. its all amazing, but #1 and #2 were the reason I like incubus so much, [i actually felt somewhat indifferent about this album on first listen, don't judge me man]) #2 - Make Yourself (Streamlined version of S.C.I.E.N.C.E. They really broke out on this one. Nowhere Fast is a top 5 track for me. Freakin amazing. Even Out From Under is a blast - maybe the most underdeveloped song on the album but still freakin' great. Mainstream hard rock at the epitome of its best. Mainstream rock doesn't have to be terrible like obnoxious hipsters think it always is) #1 - S.C.I.E.N.C.E. (Was looking up Motocross Madness 2 intro one day. What was the song? "New Skin" Found that video 11 years ago in like freshman year of high school. Slowly listened to other tracks over the next 3 years. Became full blown Incubus fan after that. This album is so hyper its nuts. Just frentic, rapidfire, all over the place in a way that makes you want to thrash all over your room. Great stuff that turned me into a huge Incubus fan.)

IMO it has the most organic guitar sound and freedom of all albums. It is also very experimental and somewhat psychedelic but not to the extent of S.C.I.E.N.C.E. (different mood). If Not Now, When? Is definitely the worst. It felt dull, unmemorable and full of trendy indie shades of gray. The Worst.

hnnnnng Seeing Crow at the bottom is PAINFUL especially when they dropped 8 which is so EASILY their lamest and most uninspired effort to date. Crow, to me, EXPLODES with creativity, new ideas that coalesce in some of their most interesting, technical, and often beautiful songs... ugh. I may have a bunch of opinions here too. I'll keep them all as replies to this comment here. ;)

All good... VENT AWAY my friend lol. I personally was not a fan of the new direction the band went after Morning View, and so Crow does not resonate with me. That doesn't mean it's bad! Just that those songs don't hit me the way songs from Science, MY and MV did. 8, despite its flaws, has some good songs, specifically the first half of the record.

Amir Khostavan I will say that 8 featured one of their best singles in years, Glitterbomb. Outside of that the whole album, to me, kinda felt like a cheap throwback to sounds we have already heard before, meshed with some ideas that just weren’t finished or thought out. I love Make Yourself. Morning View was my intro, so I love that album and is obvi classic Incubus. But.. Crow and Light Grenades, to me, is the peak of their career. As for Crow, it was their most diverse- they were experimenting with pop rock, prog, and noise rock. Lyrically and thematically, it was their angriest and most confrontational. I love nearly every second of that album, and it sees them in a musical arena not many mainstream bands venture into. Where Crow experimented the above genre-blending, Light Grenades improved upon and perfected it. It’s super hard to make music that blends so many styles and influences, and LG does it so seamlessly it’s kind of a miracle. They are at their most raw and vulnerable, their most hard rocking, their nosiest, their most experimental- it’s so SO good. Not to mention AIR. TIGHT. Not a single moment is wasted with LG. Crow might have found a lull here and there, but LG fine tunes its lyricism and musicality and, in my opinion, is easily their sharpest and propulsive album to date. LG is honestly a masterpiece and paired with Crow they are the perfect one-two punch. It super bums me out that they don’t get the love and respect they deserve. lol, and again, to each their own. This was a fun video dude, GAH it just hurts seeing that INCREDIBLE ALBUM placed last. 😂

I get not ranking Crow above Make Yourself or Morning View but damn it got done super dirty. That's easily their best album IMO. Though I will agree Talk Shows on Mute is pretty mediocre. Also I'd say the album cover is easily the worst thing about the album

When I first listened to them, they weren't my cup of tea at all, but now i consider Make Yourself and Morning View 2 of my favorite albums ever. So I don't know. But I'm glad they're willing to change and just do what they want to do.

After Light Grenades the instrumentation just fell off a cliff, with all the focus shifting to Brandon's vocals. Personally, I like listening to individual instruments that make a whole, not a mush of sound stuck behind vocals. We all have different tastes but ACLOTM at least had strong mood and atmosphere, with experimental moments. 8 and INNW...just inane and predictable. But solid reviews, regardless. Appreciate it.

I'm with you on A Crow Left of the Murder. Its fine, but it's not remarkable like Morning View, Make Yourself, or Science, nor funky and out there like Fungus Among Us. It's just a bit too 'made for radio'. Same with Light Grenades, but It's been a long time since i've listened to that one.

I don't have strong opinions on Enjoy Incubus and I've never heard Fungus Amoungus, so that's why I left them out. I can't STAND Crow lol -- believe me, I've tried. It's not for me. Some good songs (Sick Sad Little World is Top 10 Incubus songs for me), but the album overall is meh. Just my 2 cents. Thank you for watching!

Incubus albums have, as a general trend, gone downhill through their career. The great news is that it's a very gradual slope. 1. S.C.I.E.N.C.E. 2. Fungus Amongus 3. A Crow Left of the Murder 4. Morning View 5. Make Yourself 6. Light Grenades 7. If Not Now, When? 8. 8 The first album I bought by them was Make Yourself, and I didn't even listen to SCIENCE or Fungus until after Light Grenades came out. Couldn't believe what I had been missing.

All the less interesting make yourself style albums I don't think I've seen a band water down their sound quicker than these guys for popularity. Even Metallica gave ya 4 albums first. With incubus, it was literally one album cycle. I wish we coulda gotten one more s.c.i.e.n.c.e. lite type of transitional album first before getting rid of any avant garde or unpredictable approaches to their songwriting.
