"Gravity" brought me here. My only regret is that it took me 8 years to finally see this movie & realize how many geniuses were involved, between the cinematography, the sound mixing/editing, the visual effects & the acting. I can truly see why it did so well at the box office & cleaned up the way it did at the 86th Academy Awards. Just amazing & studying people like this is so inspiring for anyone who has ANY interest whatsoever in audio/visual work.

Great video. I would like to point out that the decision of how to frame and how long the shot should be are often decided by the director. Yet it is also possible for the DP to work with the director when deciding how a shot should be framed and the length of the shot.

i`ve found that lubezki is the popular choice, everyone is a chivo fan, roger is also more subtle in is movement, but more impresionistic in his lighting, emmanuel`s work is stunning but since his colaborations with mallick his films tend to look very similar wich each other.

Wanted to comment on your last observation: Chivo's photography does immerse you deeply into the movie, the viewer cannot criticize it, I agree. But it goes another way, his work is so beautiful and outstanding, I find myself analyzing it when watching the movie, not criticizing but trying to understand how this fluidity and beauty are possible. I still don't fully understand what he constructed for that car scene in the Children of Man...

Yes... thanks for this, cabrone. Somewhere I have a shot from my personal day 1 (at precisely 9:05)... there are only 5 courses of the eastern (left) block tower standing in my photo.... I'm a big Lubezki fan and I loved the video. But I think you could've talked about another aspect of his work. Despite having a naturalistic style as his signature, he sometimes breaks this aesthetic in favor of the needs of the project, like for example "A Series of Unfortunate Events", "A Little Princess" and "The Cat in the Hat". Although he also used diffused lighting and wide-angle lenses, he chose a more fanciful style for these films

Hey, not to be a negative nancy, but that's not really how perforations work. You don't get a larger negative or more resolution because you shoot fewer perforations, 4-perf essentially just means you crop the image vertically beforehand instead of doing it afterwards. Since Chivo doesn't use anamorphic lenses he probably shoots super 35 film (1.85:1) as opposed to shooting academy 35 (4:3) which you do if you're shooting anamorphic . Super 35 does have more horizontal surface on the negative (although the negative strip is the same size) which means more resolution. The problem is that if you're cropping your super 35 film to be 2.39:1, you're loosing vertical surface on the negative which negates the resolution won through super 35. That is exactly what 4-per does, it crops the negative but it does it in-camera. Now, there is a debate on which is better and gives the more pristine image, but that's a waaaay longer discussion (although as far as I know anamorphic IS better in that regard). If i want to play devil’s advocate, maybe you skip one transfer negative if you don't have to crop it in post, but that's just a guess since I know too little about the post-process involving film. The only thing 4-per really accomplishes is that it saves film while shooting, instead of shooting the full super 35 frame and then cropping it to 2.39:1 afterwards, it's already cropped and the frames are stacked closer together. This saves money on film which is why it's popular among low budget filmmakers who still want to shoot film but don't like the look of 16 mm. I think it logically should make each film roll last for longer too. I.e. you can do longer takes. Love the channel!

What does Lubezki mean when he says he avoids underexposing to preserve the blacks and avoid milky images? Wouldn't you have more blacks if you underexposed, or do you lose the detail of the actual blacks? Do you get milky images in post when you raise the blacks up?
