As a Graphic Designer and Prepress Tech, I always prefer Packaged files. At least 1 out of 3 times, I need to edit the InDesign file (add bleed, lighten/darken images, align panels for brochures, etc) before the final print. And packaging also includes fonts which is a HUGE time saver. It's very rare that I work with another designer that embeds the images but haven't had problems with the ones I have seen. For anyone that reads this, you can package an InDesign file by going to the File menu, Package, and make sure there are no warnings on the left side. Then it will put the InDesign file, links and fonts into a new folder that you can hand off.

Agreed, In fact my service providers/printers mandate that I create a Packaged File or "Collect For Output." They won't accept it any other way. I.E. Gannett Printer I use runs heavy on Magenta so they like to have links from package easy to find so they can “pull it back” if they need to. Renaming Link Folders is unwise and have never done it, but collecting for output assures that they're all there. even if I forget to look at the Links Panel.

Thank you Anne-Marie for making this tutorial something a beginner could understand and use! I will be watching more of your tutorials and perhaps, one day, I will feel confident using InDesign.

You can do it! 💪🏼

Clear and Concise the way I Like it! Unlike that “Official” Adobe Guy "Terry" who "Hims and Haws” through painfully long tutorials. Good Tips here! Also Clicking those little icons at panel bottom aids in Relinking or Updating Missing or Revised Links All at once.

The Other day I thought only Erica Gamet makes these videos. Now after sometime, I watched a video made by another man and now Anne-Marie as well. But I got to say that Anne Marie is funny. Thanks for the video. You guys are great designers and teachers.

hello great tip :) can I do something similar with links to files?? thank
@CreativePro3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but you have to set a preference to link text files… by default placed text doesn’t link back to the original. In Preferences, go to File Handling and select “Create Links When Placing Text and Spreadsheet Files.” -EG

Do you know how to count those link so to get a total of the images in the book?
@CreativePro Жыл бұрын
There may be a script that does it. The other option would be to select all the links in the panel and choose Copy Info > for selected links from the panel menu. Past that into excel (or similar) and check the line count (minus header). You could also choose Cooy Links To from the panel menu and check the item count in the folder. But that often sets the links to that folder which is annoying. -EG

HI, this is extremely frustrating- I can't get all the links together to copy all at once to be able to then paste them into another program such as word or excel. what am i missing? thank you for your help
@CreativePro Жыл бұрын
You can only select links on the same spread. You could do a package and gather just the images then place (or drag) them from the folder that creates into Word. -EG

I don't agree with embedding images as a regular practice. In some rare situations that can be a solution.
