India-China Border Deal: Modi, Xi Agree on Troop Withdrawal, Patrols | Taiwan Talks EP488

In 2020, the Galwan Valley clash in the Himalayas killed 20 Indian soldiers and at least 4 Chinese personnel. It shattered India-China ties and triggered a shift in the geopolitics of the region. Now, Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping have held their first bilateral meeting in 5 years. Just days before, the two sides reached a border patrol agreement, which included terms for the withdrawal of troops from both sides. Does this detente mean another shift in the balance of power for the United States, which sees India as a counterbalance to China in the region?

For your Kind information there is no difference in border dispute with People republic of China and with Taiwan . Both claimed same thing and till now Taiwan is claiming same thing but they didn't show aggressiveness as PRC. But all this border dispute was initially started by past Taiwan leaders in China before they moved to Taiwan. So it's Past Kuomintang Government which is responsible for border dispute and later CCP leaders also continued same claim what their predecessor Kuomintang Government has claimed . That's the reason why India won't rise voice for Taiwan and won't recognise it has independent country and always bound to one china policy but as with Tibet we will always rise our voice because Tibet never claimed such illustrated borders and they have signed agreement with British India in Shimla to draw a Indo- Tibetan border but these earlier Kuomintang government objected and started claiming everything even South China sea dispute also started with past Taiwan leaders only. For the only one reason if those disputed lands have been controlled by Chinese dynasty or rulers even just for decades in ancient times.

The biggest problem USA faces in India is that unlike other democratic allies, US is not able to move the foreign policy of India. In case of India, both parties which traditionally stay in power i.e. the Congress and BJP have clear idea that they should stay away from conflicts for some more time, maintain friendly relations with USA, Russia and China. They toally adopt the multipolarism as the nation's basic geopolitical objective.

@@hiddendagger7291 Just because India has a larger military and nuclear weapons doesn’t mean China will suddenly be trustworthy. If anything, China’s willingness to bend agreements when it suits them should concern any country-big or small. If China disregarded promises in the South China Sea, why should India assume it’s safe from similar tactics along the border? And let’s be real about the BRICS influence. While India is indeed a significant BRICS player, China’s economic dominance in the group and in the region gives it leverage. The “no firearms use on the border” clause hasn’t prevented deadly clashes in the past; it only keeps the conflict at a certain level. China has shown time and again that they’re willing to challenge any nation-even powerful ones-if they think it serves their interests. So, does it make sense to trust a handshake with a country that has a record of acting unilaterally?

Thanks to Trudeau's expert diplomacy, India is fast-tracking its border settlement with China. With that out of the way, India has a clear shot at a permanent seat on the UNSC-especially with the U.S., U.K., and France cheering from the sidelines. In 1960, Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai proposed a compromise to resolve the India-China border dispute, suggesting that China would recognize India's claim to the eastern sector (Arunachal Pradesh) if India acknowledged Chinese control over Aksai Chin in the western sector. This "package deal" aimed to settle the boundary by dividing the contested areas between the two countries, with China prioritizing Aksai Chin for its strategic link between Tibet and Xinjiang. However, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru rejected the proposal, as he was unwilling to return any territory gained by lines drawn by its former colonial master. The U.S. maintained its embargo on China during the Great Chinese Famine (1959-1961) discouraging other nations from sending food, while millions died of starvation. Confident that China is weakened and will collapse, India implemented its "Forward Policy", expecting a weak Chinese response. It tried again in May 2020, while China was shut down by COVID-19, expecting a weaker response from China. If this border issue had been resolved in 1960, the past 64 years of mutual suspicion and distrust might have been avoided. China does not view any country as an adversary and is open to collaboration and partnership with all nations. Anywhere in the world, if there is a border dispute, it is usually the result of a line drawn by an Englishman; if it is an internal dispute, it is usually the US fueling it with diplomatic, financial, covert, and military support. Difference in implementation of divide and conquer strategy.

One thing missed out in this discussion is the effect of high-altitude on Chinese Soldiers in PLA. They have been stationed opposite Indian Army for the last 4 years and have lost a major chunk of their soldiers. Just in 2023-24, about 55 PLA soldiers DIED due to high altitude illnesses and its estimated that about 120+ PLA soldiers suffered from HAPO (High Altitude Pulmonary Oedema)...these 120+ soldiers most likely have permanent damage to their pulmonary vessels. Over the past 4 years one can estimate that PLA has lost probably 700 to 1000 soldiers just to High Altitude Diseases.

It's real. Indian Military has this data, you can corroborate through Chinese SM. HAPO and HACE are serious and fatal disorders. The Chinese are unable to tolerate extreme cold/high altitudes.

Dear friends in Taiwan. Do NOT forget few critical points. 1 - chinese economy is solely dependent on western economy as that is export led economy and western economies are in doldrums 2 - china killed its domestic consumption story as in the name of "cultural revolution" mao killed all thousands of years of practices, diversity, festivals, sprititual travels - all the wisdom that went from Bharat (India) to east. China can NOT revive that while in Bharat we preserved that and such events are major push for domestic consumption and also travel & hospitality sector. China has to revive ancient type of relationships with Bharat where Bharat was spiritual guru. To revive all those things. 3 - west imposed one-child policy and broken family system now is irreversible. Even if they achieve point 1 and 2... they can not restore this, despite massive efforts its yielding no result. Family systems evolve with civilizational states NOT european definition of states.. and Bharat has retained it in hers DNA. 4 - this has impacted chinas ability to war. They are producing unwilling, pampered solidiers.. They have started to withdraw BECAUSE every week dozens of their solidiers are dying on high mountains while indians are battle hardened and training & acclimatization system is soooo strong even a soldier (male female) from hot deserts can play games like vollybol WITHOUT any rescue gears (high oxygen requirement games). 5 - Chinas BRI is biting it back. Trillions of $ of bad loans and to all rogue nations, all with buying out their elites. Only Bharat can help it, if china "respects its occupied territories by pak, itself etc"... and those are flagship of BRI. And I sense china is seeing that, if they DO NOT come out of maoist mindset they will be doomed. They have to go back to ancient relationship to work as one entity.. and if they do it, whole of southeast and far east will work as unified center as Bharat was their spiritual, knowledge, trading, technology epicenter...

I think countries like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh should come together as one nation. Similarly, East Asian countries could consider uniting with China. Instead of traditional democratic systems, talented and skilled people could lead and make policies more efficiently. Disagreements should be resolved through peaceful talks and negotiations. By working together, these regions could focus on improving life for everyone and explore opportunities to settle on places like Mars, the Moon, and nearby planets.

Good relations between Bharat and China is important for Global peace and stability. But, at the same Chinese Communist party should change its ways on how they deal with their neighbours. They should respect written agreements and not break it every 5 years. Mutual respect is important. Communism in China will destroy it and rest of Asia as well if is not kept in check

Absolutely…. These 5 blind eyes have highly underestimated India, China and Putin. They have taken matters for granted. 😂😂😂. In Chinese perspective, they smelled that Trump is coming and they need a market like India. Not only that by forcing India to respect Line of Actual Control, eventually India has ceded their claim on Aksai Chin. Moreover they can concentrate more in their claim over Taiwan and can be used as a bargaining tool with US & West in case of further alienation. In Indian perspective, by forcing China to respect LOC, India succeeded to force China to forget their claim over Ladak and Arunachal Pradesh, at least temporarily. India can also open their market for Chinese investment and it will reduce the trade deficit with China. It’s almost a win win situation for both countries US could have capitalised this issue by giving more technology support to India and shifting more US companies to India. But Biden administration has lost that chance. So I think China and Russia have won diplomatically in this phase. Now Trump administration has to do extra efforts. Biden and US deepstate made situations complicated for Americans

After the major clashes, the official bilateral talks between the two sides depict a major shift towards cooperation and efforts to build trust and partnership. This initial step of disengagement is in itself a significant development to create a peaceful border region. India lost 20 soldiers in the 2020 Galwan clash and India finds it very important to not let it happen again. To build trust is as important as steps of disengagement.

As typical, a great show with clarity on Indo-Asian territorial tensions. A request, please cover in detail, the use of the word ‘democracy’ in CCP rhetoric. I suspect that internationally, PRC uses it as a co-opted cypher for leveraging western influences in coveted regional contexts. They are not using it as a descriptor of a local or national Gov. System. Is it a nominalization, and an obfuscation to facilitate CCP decision-making agency?
