Reservation will give opportunity not equality. Diversity Training: WHY Indian upper caste do not get enraged for violence against dalits the way white people in west fight for rights of non whites. Recently many people discussed this issue on social media ( you tube atleast some dalit media channels.) There are many reasons. Biggest one is theory of karma , which makes people believe dalits deserve the life they got due to past life karmas and any thing they get to mitigate their bad situation is non deserving and kind of favor to them. This is at subconscious level and people hardly recognize it. But let's keep that for other time as it by itself a very deep and broad topic.Another reason is white guilt against racism vs Caste pride in subcontinent. Let's keep that for some other time as well. Coming to the issue: BECAUSE most people don't see caste system as an Issue or atleast their issue. They don't see how caste system has harmed nation for miliniums and still doing it. For educated upper caste: they see some intercaste marriage between upper castes and declare caste system non existent. Most of them know Caste system through reservation system and start hating undeserving lower castes because they do not know and are not taught history of the land and why we came to this point. For them it's unjust ( technically they are right it's positive descrimination in favor of dalits) and need to go. When upper caste say real issue is economic status and reservation should be on that basis they have middle class or poor in mind but they have no idea what actual poverty is in villages and condition of poorest which belong to dalit Community. They can't see that these dalits are not only kept poor but exploited and humiliated for generations and it's high time upper caste India realize how selfish they are being when they choose to ignore this fact. Conversely, you see in West presence of "White guilt" where white people are ready accept historic wrong doings and are ready to fight to amend it. That is due to education and diversity Training. They are not taught how for thousands of years dalits were not allowed into temples, segregated from society and only after constitution they got basic human rights. They don't realize how this issue threatens national security as well( naxalite movement). They don't realize how caste system among upper caste also is detrimental to the unity of nation. Is Caste based politics not hindrance and threat to unity of nation. Stark inequality is a recognized threat to democracy and prosperity in any society. Don't we need to address that? They are not taught in school why India remain segregated compared to societies around globe due to caste system. There are similar things like caste in other countries but nothing as vicious as Caste system. Example: In my school ( one of the best in Gujarat at the time) mostly attended by upper caste ( jains, Patel, Bania, Brahmin) they would announce list of castes ( lower caste) and if you belong to any of them you go to office in the middle of lecture. Then they ask if your parents earn enough or you need to apply for certain assistance , if not you need to submit a letter in writing. Class used to burst into laughing when they announce these castes because most of the these caste names are used as curse words in Local language. This is their experience with other lower caste. Teachers also used to laugh but missed opportunity to teach students that just how proudly they say their caste some are cursed to be in caste which is curse word for no fault of theirs ( karma theory comes in to play here) and that is wrong. No need to say No religious diversity as well. ******** Solution: ********* What we can really use is diversity Training program like in US , starting from primary school to college and work place. In this we can include all kinds of descrimination ( handicap, gender, race (north east people, ) , regional biases, sexual orientation and caste descrimination. People should learn what kind of behavior is not appropriate, not legal, how to identify it, what are your legal rights, how can you help prevent it. Media can help spread awareness too. Remember : " Mile sur Mera tumhara" or " Chalo padhaye kuch Kar dikhaye". School kids can have projects like making pen friends ( Facebook) from other religions, other caste, from different backgrounds. Summer project can be to educate some one illiterate. You can be creative and sky is the limit. Trips to local village where people still practicing these descrimination. This will create awareness and pressure to get rid of caste system based and other descrimination. Dr Ambedkar said unless people share bread, birth, death , joy and sorrows together they will not feel cohesion in their hearts. People need to know women ( Common women)did not have right to property and inheritance until constitution gave them that right. In absence of that knowledge they just hate Dr Ambedkar as someone who has imposed reservation for dalits and hate him along with dalits. In really Dr Ambedkar had to resign fighting for these rights for women ( Hindu code bill) and not a single leader of the time supported him and hindy leaders vehemently opposed it.( We were not that liberal as we are told, and we still aren't compared to West) These things need to be discussed and debated. But how many social science students study such things? In villages people still don't mingle in each others birth, death and marriage ceremony, seperate cemetery, seperate well. A lot need to be done. This is a proven thing which has worked in US and West, can work in India as well. Only change in attitude will bring equality. We need to ask for this in every State and national level this should be implemented. There are other things that can be donebut that for other time. Please start spreading word (email to people in power,in person what ever way) we have lost 73 years can't wait anymore. But unfortunately, contrary to what is required, there is a big movement going on in which they deny there is or ever was Caste descrimination in India. There is a big effort to blame whole thing on British ( Check Rajiv Malhotra, subramaniam swami etc on KZbin). If we don't accept problem how and when are we going to solve it.

@@alpeshmittal3779 very nicely analysed and suggested solution , Indian hindu population has been forced to reform, for good , since the time of Raja ram mohan rai and Mahatma gandhi ji ,still ready to reform its social evils ( selfish motives) , sanatan religion can not blamed but follower who twist it for thier own favoure. Yes the attitued towards cast must change in every citizen of india , every religion ,within indian geographical boundry must reform so we can reach to have Uniform civil code . Its is common sense, not to laugh at others ,do not demean others ,respect every human ,be compassionte ,be non violent in deeds and words , respect enviroment have been taught to us in sanatan culture so majoroty are sensible , what is wrong if these common traits taught to and followed by every citizen irrespective of Identity. If you stay in USA you may be knowing todays violent protests and revers racism and insecurity among common people when they come out with gun only to check a protest rally which do not happen in india where rallies happens on daily basis ,common citizen even dont keep lathis in house. What more tolrent citizens yoy expect .and yes nothing is 100% ,India is improving its socity news generation is having differrent values then thier previous generstion and i am confident people wont mind mentioning thier cast , As Ford ,Bush dont mind thier sirname .we must be patient. Western European countries are most progressive and developed countries because they separate state and politics. India is only a developing country so to work with each other, develop science and develop as nation we should separate religion with state and politics. If we aren’t secular we will become like Iran or Iraq or Syria or like other middle eastern countries where women have no equal rights. People should first learn what secularism actually means before they start debating. Secularism only means that it is not subject to religious rule. India is a diverse country with myriad religions so it is important that we are secular otherwise, it becomes conflict of interest boosting distrust in the central government. This is why we have to elect an unbiased political party at the central level. Not someone who boosts building a Ram temple as a proud moment for the country (clearly , to instigate sensitive religious people and build their vote bank).

Harsh Chaturvedi You are mixing up too many things here. I am just talking about secularism and the aspect of separating state and politics. AYUSH KUMAR That is the sad part. To begin with Modi government didn’t find any other way but to stoop to these low level politics to earn votes from the innocents who could be easily lured based on their religious values. It is not correct to show that india is only Hindu country despite majority Hindu population. If tables are turned how would you feel? I understand that our neighbor Pakistan treats Hindus very poorly but at the same time our country foundation has always been different. It has been a land for all religions and to coexist has been its beauty and one shouldn’t break this bond between people. Sadly , it seems like there is no other way for politicians. Modi always make a political statement with saffron dressing and his conduct it is very clear that he is biased. In fact he used to be a RSS worker and these ties with RSS are scary which used to be foundational values for the Nazis.

Bharat was a healthy democracy from 1947-1976 without being secular. For a "Democracy" (rule of the people, rule by the people and rule for the people through elected representative) like India (a plural country where several religion created and adopted) it is necessary to strike a balance between rights and voices of the people. For that we need a nation which is tolerant in terms of choices, opinion and religion, here comes the role of government to implement the policy of secularism. In the absence of secularism majoritarian could try to impose their choices, opinion and religion on other people which are in minority. In the absence of secularism we could experience the same which happen with persecuted minorities in several nation, which happen with Black people in US. If we don't accept problem how and when are we going to solve it.

secularism is very much required for democracy. Deepa says she practices hinduism, but she cannot say she is an Ideal hindu. Thus it distorts the hindu beliefs and culture. Ghandhi and periyaar did not participate in politics , because you have to cut corners, distort the religious message to win an election. Deepa should be open to criticisms of her religion and beliefs otherwise she should not be public about her beliefs. For e.g. Modi laid the foundation for Ram temple. The reason he/his party gives is , mughals destryoed the temple 500 years ago, so they are going to destroy masjid and build Ram temple. Ghandhi once said, an eye for an eye will make the whole world blind. This act of Modi, cannot be accepted as a Hindu belief rather he has become a bad example. This is the very reason why we need secularism in our country.

UK has a state religion and is also a democracy so there's the proof by contradiction that democracy needs secularism. I also think Gandhi's saying is too facile. It recommends submission in the face of oppression, something Hindus are unfortunately all too familiar with. If a person is going around poking people's eyes out, all others have a responsibility to destroy this eye-poker for universal peace and good.

I think that they were deviating from the very concept of secularism in indian context.. as the secularim that we have adopted is far different from the westerm countries which says that state should kept apart from the religion and should maintain equal distance from all religion unlike indian secularism which says that in india state should maintain equal proximity with all the religions i.e state is not separated from the religion but it is close with every religion and indian state will respect every religion in that country... so basically no one was coming to that point and all were simply discussing about past and the word secularism and not about its present relevance and how is it going against to uniform civil code( whether going or not)..

How could Central and State governments take over the management of Hindu temples if they were secular? The concept of secularism is NON-UNIFORM. From where it originally comes, it simply means seperation of the state and the religion. In a way, it will mean that Sikhs can't wear turban in the parliament, Christians can't wear the cross etc. India is not and can never be secular in this way, which is why originally it wasn't used in the constitution. You just cannot seperate the religion completely in India. Everyone in the debate interpreted the term in their own ways and thus had different views. Miss Saba herself said "For me, secularism is...". If it's happening like this, what VALUE does the word 'secularism' hold? Any person can make up his definition of secular and follow it, whether it be ideal or not. This forms the root for misuse of the term. Politicians have manipulated the term in their favour, according to their convenience since 44 years😱. We have been literally fooled. Agreed that there are many aspects that we Indians should follow, but at least don't feed the people lies!.. First ensure that your country understands the principles, follows it and then announce it. China calls itself democratic, but is it? We can't even define secularism in the Indian context unanimously but we do beat the drums of secularism. God bless the future generations! They will live in illusion.

There is no point holding debates now, however insightful they may be. These debates, coupled with related mass votings on such tight issues could have held before the constitution was made. Also, the needs and aspirations of a country changes from time to time. There should be a provision for making important changes to it according to the needs of the time. Otherwise it will cease to have some practical effect on the decisions and policies of the people and the govt. Thank you _/\_

Sanket secularism is not simple as choosing sides and voting down for as you choose between India vs Pakistan cricket game. Secularism in itself is much more complex framework and it can only be viewed (put in practice) and not defined (in theory) as in any given big nations. By that I mean, everybody rather every religion has their own version of how they 'view' or 'practice' secularism and unifying that view isn't that simple and hence the conflicts as we see today are evident. There's no other way around simplifying the concept secularism but to accept it as it is and look for how this 'view' can evolve over the period of time and tame it with law and order if it gets out of control.

Same case for me also, as per your way of thinking. 😁

Atleast have a clear playing field NDTV. The panelists against the motion are up against seasoned professionals in their fields and they were fish without water. This was clearly demonstrated in their clear lack of understanding of the topic on hand. Secularism in a bare bone definition means 'the principle of separation of the state from religious institutions'. It would have been interesting to hear a productive counter argument and not this. It's a no for me this time.

@Butterfly lover The fundamental question is why tolerate a palpably non-secular ideology such as Islam in a secular country. Obviously accept the individual Muslims who call India home, but why Islam?
