I've never tried 'em before! Hmmm. I generally get any organic ones from my local co-ops and health markets. Typically it's Lotus Foods, TruRoots, Yoga Organics or Lundberg in recent times.
@RedPillVegan5 жыл бұрын
I generally do not buy organic rice. Those are solid brands however. My philosophy on ethnic markets especially regarding dry rice and dry beans, is buy what the People buy. I'd rather buy one of the premier brands amongst the community, from a store where they sell volume, than I would go to a white people grocery store where a bag of Lundberg rice has been sitting on the shelf for x months. Ironically my friend at the Indian market does infact choose to buy organic rice... But he eats Sona masoori rice. I have an old video on that I, personally I prefer Basmati at this point. (if the choice is between Basmati and Sona masoori) ...Asian rice is a different story. I could talk at length about this lol
@kestertroy4 жыл бұрын
@@RedPillVegan please do. I'm just starting to look into basmati rice but am overwhelmed by the variety of rice consumed by the Indian community. I'm Asian and I'm familiar with Jasmine and short grain (Korean & Japanese) rice, but Indian rice is a whole different story.
@Quincycle5 жыл бұрын
Do you worry about arsenic contamination at all?
@RedPillVegan5 жыл бұрын
Not really. I'm not saying eat exclusively rice. I also generally do not eat rice grown in the USA unless it is grown in California. If I buy USA, I buy Confirmed California Asian brands like han kuk mi, and one of the best sticky rices from a family farm called Koda farms. (There are videos about koda farms on KZbin, and it gets into the history of how their farm was confiscated during the Japanese internment... Great watch, and all the more reason to support craft rice growers like Koda farms.) If I buy jasmine rice, Thailand. If I buy basmati, I'm buying premium brands grown in choice regions of India. The data I've seen suggests that the rice grown in India has some of the lowest arsenic concentrations of anywhere in the world. rice is so cheap and there are so many servings in a big bag that it doesn't make sense to skimp a few dollars and by the "cheap bag" - it truly is one case where spending a little bit more money really goes a long way. if you are concerned about rice and arsenic, my advice is to choose brands carefully with informed choices, and enjoy it semi regularly. I eat rice regularly without much concern. I have gotten my arsenic levels checked as well on a blood test. My results were not zero, but not elevated either. (And that was after a prolonged period of smashing a ton of rice)
@RedPillVegan5 жыл бұрын
The arsenic situation is most serious with rice grown in the United States outside of California, and certain parts of Bangladesh (which to be honest it would be very unusual that you would ever find rice grown in Bangladesh in the United States supermarkets) - and as I understand it there are some legitimate concerns with concentrated rice products like brown rice syrup and some processed foods as well.

I don't shop at Indian stores. I'm from Europe and honestly hadn't seen or heard of these brands where I'm from or where I live. I actually googled one of the brands and only found it in some specialized Indian online supermarket. Didn't even say how much it costs, only that it's a 10-kilogram bag which I've never seen in a normal supermarket. I don't understand the point of going out if your way to shop from such places. DateYana 10lb bags are the norm for most brands of basmati on the market (not 10kg). Shopping at indian markets is the best value. These brands are readily available and well known. Within the indian community, india gate and dawaat are highly esteemed. Part of the point of doing videos like this is to share my experience and knowledge trying some of the best basmati available. You may notice I recommended the next video comparing two other brands (Tilda and Kohinoor). Quite frankly I’ve noticed that a lot of my friends and acquaintances say things like *how can you eat rice!?* - as if rice tastes bad... and of course they’ve never really tried anything beyond uncle bens or some precooked single serve microwave rice. Hopefully my enthusiasm is coming through Best

I’ve never tried India Gate, but Dawaat is amazing. Believe it or not, I had another that was even better than Dawaat… the name escapes me right now, I’ll have to figure it out, but it was a long-grain basmati variant. It was pretty damn expensive though, but eh, anyone whose tried a high quality basmati rice knows it’s worth it. If you find a high ass quality jasmine rice it’s also an unreal addition to a stir-fry. Sadly, jasmine rice isn’t as fool proof as basmati because the aroma escapes the rice very quick after packaging, rendering the rice lifeless by the time most of them even hit the grocery store.
@RedPillVegan5 жыл бұрын
I can tell you're not new to this game either. 😆 I feel basically the same way on those points. In my opinion because Rice's so cheap to begin with, it's worth it to spend a few extra dollars upfront and buy the better brands based on experience because when you spread the cost out over many many meals the enjoyment you get from the superior product is totally worth it. However this does not mean I go and buy the kitchy small one pound packages they sell at Whole Foods all those white people brands

Most premium brands sell 10lb bags (these two are less than $20 usd / 10lb) Some brands do sell 10kg, (about 22lbs) but most larger bags are either 25lbs or 50lb. But these are usually more generic, mass market basmatis. I have seen 25lb bags of basmati for around $25-30usd - maybe more or less if brand is good or generic. I’ve bought cheaper basmati for $9 per 10lbs too

For us poor folks, the best basmati rice is the cheapest basmati rice that is not from China or USA 😂
@RedPillVegan5 жыл бұрын
I feel you man. My philosophy is that because the cost of rice is so cheap to begin with that it is not an area on which to skimp. The "cheap" basmati is only a couple dollars cheaper per 10 lb bag compared to these premium brands. Spread out over the course of many meals, that money is well spent for a few extra dollars. Granted, there are even more expensive brands out there (organic, and the type you find at Whole Foods) - these two brands move volume at the Indian market, so in my opinion these are the preferred brands of the people based on sales and word-of-mouth.

@@RedPillVegan I'm also trying out different rice to find my favourite. So far best value I'd say is Trophy (I think it's Indian) small 'long grain' basmati. The main things are: 1) price: it's usually around 90pence - £1 per KG, 2) it's a light white if that's what you like 3) it's very fluffy. I find thinner the grain the better the taste of your dish. The thicker or wetter the grain the less you'll taste the flavours of your curry/sauce/dish. Iranian rice: Anjoman is the recommended one they use in all iranian restaurants. When it comes to rice they're the best people (this one is much longer in length and is best cooked the iranian way) i wasn't a rice person so when I tried this in a restaurant I found myself eating it plain because it tasted really good. I had to ask the waiter what brand they use as I think my mum would definitely switch to this. That was Anjoman. Mum cooked it her own way, she only rated the length and said no fragrance. Sister in law says it's down to cooking techniques to get the fragrance out that's why id say best cooked the iranian way. Yet to try Imperial also another Iranian brand
