India is home to some of the most polluted rivers in the world, with the Ganges being one of the most affected. Despite several efforts, the challenge of cleaning up these rivers seems impossible. In this video, we will explore the reasons why cleaning rivers in India is such a complex and difficult task.
We will examine the impact of rapid urbanization and industrialization, the lack of proper sewage treatment facilities, limited resources, political will, and cultural practices that hinder the efforts to clean up these rivers.
Join us as we delve into the challenges faced by the Indian government, environmentalists, and the public at large in their quest to restore the purity of India's rivers.

1 I fully disagree with this narrative that it’s impossible to clean the rivers of India. All these developed countries, in spite of much more higher level of industrialisation and developed chemical, fertiliser, textile and construction industries have successfully kept their rivers super clean, even when one river passes through a number of countries. Here what we have to understand is right efforts with right intensity has not been applied in India. Whatever river cleaning projects we have observed was and utterly insufficient and most of them were engulfed in corruption. A few thousand crore is not sufficient amount to handle Waste generated bye population of 30/40 cr people. Apart from large scale water recycling plants and sewage treatment plants at all villages and all city’s with target of covering complete water recycling, we have to integrate complete drip irrigation wherever applicable in entire agricultural sector along with solid waste management program also. This has not happened in India resulting in less effectiveness and that’s why it appears near to impossible. 2 as far as money spending is concerned. This entire master integrated water recycling, mandatory drip irrigation,STPs and solid waste management plan may take around 10-15 lakh cr. From where this amount will come? Government by deficit financing had additionally spent six lakh cr during two years of Covid period. We will have to continue that kind of deficit financing for around seven years to meet that expense. Even the salary hikes of nearly 2% of population who are government employees, in one pay commission enhances the expense by lakhs of crores rupees during half a decade. Then why not to spend on such greatly greatly needed plan that will so positively affect the lives of almost entire population. The additional debt creation may fetch around 1.5 lakh cr off tax burden if the total expense is envisaged to be 20 lakh cr and Interest is considered at 7%. Here it is pertinent to note that Indians are creating almost 10 lakh cr of debt every year to buy cars which is actually not the need of Indian society and Indian conditions. And these car buyers spend almost average minimum 1.25 to 1.5 lakh rupees every year in just EMIs if we yconsider average car pricey between 5 to 10 lakh. Further, it should also be noted that most of these developed countries created debt much higher than their GDP even up to 5 times of their GDP to fulfil their needs and to become developed. Then why shouldn’t we spend some money by creation of debt to fulfil our basic need? 3what we need to understand is, most of the countries who are developed today, first managed their water resources. Water is first need of life. However great resources we would have, but if we don’t manage the water resources properly, we would remain under developed only. There are many countries like Israel who developed actually because of single biggest tool-water management. We may also understand that proper water management would lead to substantial increase in food production, which will enhance the supply elasticity of food leading to ease of food inflation. Ease in food inflation will increase the roam for higher deficit financing to be used for development of infrastructure/secondary/tertiary sectors without increasing the inflation, The model of development which was typically used by western countries that has been hidden from us.

I completely disagree with your view. As someone who has seen the Namami Gange initiative closely, I would like to inform you that river cleaning doesn't work in the way you explained it i.e. rational & irrational. However, one thing that you are right about is cleaning at the source which is exactly what the team at Namami Gange is doing. To give a brief, in every city, each and every nala discharging wastewater into the river has already been mapped, howsoever small it may be. Then interception and diversion (I&D) works are being undertaken to connect every small nala to a main drain which is then connected to an STP. In cases where tapping of nala is not possible/feasible, decentralized STP (DSTP) has been planned to ensure clean water is discharged into the river. The projects for the cities are being taken up in phases. While you will see ongoing works in cities such as Patna or Prayagraj, the work in other cities like Agra is just starting. Thus, it is just a matter of time before you will be able to see the results. Unlike highway construction, where you can see the day to day progress using a drone, you will have to wait to see results in sewerage projects.

The root problem is mentality. Log apne Ghar ko saaf suthra rakhte hain, kabhi bhi koi apne gharko ganda nahi rakhega. Par bahar Kudal kachra phenkne mein unko koi problem nahi hai. Mentality yeh hai ki yeh toh mera ghar nahi hai, isko saaf kyun rakhoon. Jab log pure desh ko, starting from apna mohalla, to apna city, to apna state ko apna ghar jaisa samman aur respect denge, ki Haan yeh bhi mera ghar hi hai, ise bhi apne ghar jaisa samman karunga, aur apne ghar ke jaisa saaf suthra rakhunga, tab jaake desh saaf suthra Hoga.

Clean water is priceless. Life can't go on without clean, unpolluted water. Treated water apparently can be sold to industries reducing load on water resources. Biofuels can be generated from solid, liquid and gaseous waste materials. If this is done it can generate employment and energy for the nation and reduce imports of the same. As per Nitin Gadkari jis statements large number of STPs are being built in Northern States to clean up sewage water being let into main rivers or their tributaries. Such cleanups have happened in Western countries as well so it's definitely not impossible. It's very much possible esp if it's made into a recycling business run by private players. Lots of jobs. Raddi business may be among the most profitable businesses as their input cost is very low and profit margin is very high (waste to wealth).

I don't think it is impossible. It is difficult and we need to continue the process. Water management process, water cleaning and treatment projects are very important for cleaning the rivers. The givernment has deployed large scale STPs under thr namami gange project. These plants will help in cleaning of the Ganga and its tricuteries. The government is also tryong to work on solving the issue of flow of untreated seawage into the Ganages. This can be replicated on other rivers as well in a profitable manner with the help of community support and involvement of private corpoerates.

@@shaktimaan1064 the solution isn't that hard to be honest. We just have to stop adding more pollutants in water. It might hurt some industries who try to save money by releasing their waste into the river but after that nature will make everything right within a few years. Aur water treatment ka zimmedaari City government ke paas honi chahiye na ki indivisual manufacrer ke paas. Municipality should make Dedicated Sewage treatment plant, khud banane ka bhi zarurat nahi hai, bus wo Contract de de plant banane ka aur maintain karne ka via bidding. Aur fir baaki industries direct us dedicated plant par apna waste send kar sakti hai. Aur koi bhi City se agar waste river par jata hai, to Municipality par iska heavy fine lagna chahiye.

That's totally wrong, high amounts of biodegradable waste is harmful to the rivers as it messes with their ph level. Many flower sellers have chemicals in their flowers which pollute the river. So, dumping of flowers and more religious waste does have an effect on the river.

In this environment, spending a lot of money on projects whose benefit is not directly visible (compared to highways, trains etc) is going to be very difficult politically.

States have too much power in India. Indian Constitution needs to be updates. And the centre should order all the states to have one large sweage treatment plant for every city inside the state. And also give a time frame by excercising emergency powers of the centre because states just wont listen. To reduce cost the govt. can develop a single design for a sewage plant and build it all over India. The sewage plants should be massive and treat water like Japan's sewage treatment plan does. So clean that the country allows its children to play in the treated water during summers.

If you are saying biodegradable waste is not a problem, you've not done enough research. The amount of organic matter in water is extremely important in maintaining aquatic life which also plays a big part in keeping rivers alive. Storm water management is also a huge part in river pollution, which almost everyone overlooks and unfortunately you also did the same. During rains everything in the pavements, roads gets washed directly into the rivers, with no buffers to stangnate and settle residues and this is a big contributor to eutrophication, especially when it washed off top soil nutrients into the rivers where in causes algal blooms. We need very strategic city landscaping to stangnate storm water, so the top soil sediments settle, organic matter and oil residue from roads are physically filtered out where it can remain in soil and not reach the rivers. Many cities in the world do this from the very first point, by making housing regulations for rainbarrels and managing controlled discharge of rainwater before it even hits the ground. Then raingardens in public streets settle pollutants and they collect the water in local pools and only the excess from that will move into larger drainage pipes that empties into rivers. While I don't know if some of our places even have separate drainage pipes for sewage or storm drains

I know one can’t compare a lake and a river which travels across Half the country. But what I’m trying to say is all this talk abt Ganga being a holy river and mother blah blah is just pure bullshit. Rivers flow. That garbage and pollutants will wash away into the sea. All they need to do is set up major waste management plants, water treatment plants all across the settlements along the river. Even if it means setting up smaller units in places like Varanasi. Filtering waste that flows into the rivers is easier than cleaning rivers once the untreated water is already discharged into the river.
