India landslides: Many feared dead and dozens trapped

At least 93 people have been killed and dozens are still feared trapped after heavy rains triggered massive landslides in the southern Indian state of Kerala.
The landslides struck hilly areas in Wayanad district in the early hours of Tuesday.
Rescue operations are underway, but are being hindered by heavy rains and the collapse of a crucial bridge.
"The situation continues to remain very grave. The casualties may go up," V Venu, the state's top civil servant, told local media.

I have wonderful memories of my time in Kerala back in 2003. One my all-time favourite Indian dishes was Keralan fish fry a I was mainly on the coast. Flew from Trivandrum airport to Sri Lanka for about 6 weeks - hated the food. Couldn't wait to get back to India to eat proper food that tasted wonderful! God bless the poor victims of Kerala, and the people suffering.

Moreover, the dam is located in an earthquake-prone area. Small-time earthquakes that had happened in 1979 and 2011 caused some cracks in the dam. 25 Oct 2021 The Mullaperiyar dam is situated in an area prone to earthquakes and landslides, classified as Zone-Ill. The zone is classified as a Moderate Damage Risk Zone which can face tremors up to an estimate of 5.6 magnitude on the Richter scale. It is reported that the area has become more vulnerable to earthquakes. What will happen to Kerala if Mullaperiyar dam breaks? In the distance, roads and bridges would get washed away too. The lives and livelihoods of about 100,000 people would be devastated before they could get to safety. But the dangers would not be over yet. After about 45 minutes, the flood would reach the Idukki dam about 25 km (15 mi) downstream. Plz help us 🙏
