One important reason due to which this fort was unconquered is , Siddis often aligned themselves with a power rival to the one attacking or besieging the fort, so their allied power kept the attacking kingdom busy in fighting somewhere else and kept the siddi's and janjira fort supplied.

The fort was later captured by Marathas from Siddis.
@surajbiradar9827 Жыл бұрын
@@mangopudding5979 it wasn't captured by the marathas. The campaign you are probably referring to is the offensive conducted by peshwa bajirao against the Siddis. While the Marathas captured all coastal territories like danda, rajapuri, north konkan etc Siddis quickly capitulated and made a deal with the peshwa to be the Chhatrapati's tributary vassal in turn they could keep the Janjira fort. I am from Murud Janjira and I would like to say that Janjira was under the Siddi rule. Siddis worked as allies of Adilshah of Bijapur and later for the Mughals. That's true that Maratha king Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was never able to conquer the fort Janjira but his son, king Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj once besieged this fort in 1682, nearly choked the Siddis to death but had to retreat from the fight to drive back a large Mughal army from his capital, Raigad. After many years, Siddi leader was killed in battle with the army of Peshwa Bajirao in 1736. Siddis signed a peace treaty and annual tributaries to Marathas until British took over the region. Then Janjira became a princely state of Siddis in British India and paid taxes to British. Padmadurg is one of the sea forts built by Maratha kings in 1676 in Murud to challenge Janjira which was controlled by Siddis and control the other activities in Arabian sea and it is located in the northwest direction of Janjira fort at a distance of about 10 km.

Raja Ram Rao Patil was the Patil of Janjira Island and a chief of the Kolis who built this island in the 15th century for Kolis to live on peacefully away from pirates. He built the island after gaining permission from the Sultan of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate but later refused to obey the orders of the Sultan. In retaliation, the Sultan sent his Admiral Piram Khan in 1489 to capture the island. Due to the castle's fortifications, Piram Khan was unable to attack the island conventionally, so he disguised himself as a merchant and requested to stay a night at Janjira. He was granted permission, and he hosted a party under the guise of thanking the Patil. When the Patil and the Kolis were intoxicated, Piram Khan attacked them with his men, who had been hidden in barrels, and captured the island.

These Siddis (Arab owned Afro slaves) of Janjira were vicious barbarians, trafficking slaves that they would capture from neighboring defenseless coastal villages was their primary profession. They did not built this fort it was built by Rajaramrao Patil (a local Koli chieftain) long before the first Arab or Arab owned Afro slave stepped foot onto that tiny island. Siddis did fortified it though and placed mammoth cannons that proved to be crucial in the defense of that fort in following years. Siddis were way too barbaric than even barbary pirates of north Africa, Marathas under Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and later Sambhaji Maharaj did tried to capture this fort on few occasions but did not succeed, though Marathas managed to put a check on their barbaric activities for a brief period of time as Siddis completely confined themselves within Janjira, they would never dare to take on Marathas by coming out of indomitable fortification of Janjira. Soon after the tragic death of Sambhaji Maharaj Siddis started harassing and capturing locals by coming out of Janzeera, they were already allies of Mughals who handed over the most crucial Maratha fort of Raigad to them. Marathas at that point were busy in fighting with massive Mughal army on multiple fronts as great Mughal Alamgir Aurangzeb himself had arrived in Deccan region to wipe out Marathas once and for all but even after spending last 27 years of his life in Deccan all he could managed to win and retain against Marathas was some hundred square feet land for his modest tomb situated just outside Sambhaji Nagar city (earlier known as Aurangabad) of today's MH. Siddis literally ransacked the whole region around Raigad, killing and looting hundreds of locals, many managed to flee to Satara, a Maratha dominated mainland. Once Chatrapati Shahu took over Maratha throne he expressed his willingness to recapture prestigious Raigad fort and freeing the region from the Siddi barbarians before newly appointed Peshwa (prime minister of Maratha state) Bajirao 1st, he was so furious after hearing the atrocities that Siddis carried out in the region that he ordered his men not to spare any Siddi and announced that every Maratha soldier would be paid extra for every Siddi head he would bring back to Satara as trophy. In 1733, Peshwa Bajirao launched a campaign against the Siddis of Janjira. Bajirao's forces, however, did not take Janjira fort, though they captured all of surrounding area; a favorable treaty gave the Marathas indirect control over virtually all of the Sidi's lands. Needless to say Marathas gave Siddis taste of their own cruelty in the most gruesome manner, the entire coastal region was freed from reign of Siddis terror, some handful of them managed to get behind walls of Janjira thus saving them from ongoing Maratha onslaught. Siddis never got into slave trafficking after that thanks to strong presence of Marathas in the region who even reached as far as Delhi in coming years under the leadership of same Peshwa Bajirao 1st. Would like to add one more point here, Siddis confidence and aggression grew by many folds when Aurangzeb arrived in Deccan with almost half a million of his royal Mughal army to wipe out Marathas. There was an incident where on the orders of Aurangzeb Siddis came out of their Janjira fort attacked, captured and looted the trading port of Bombay which barely had 10K inhabitants at that time. This incident is famously known as "The 1689 Siege of Bombay", British rushed to Aurangzeb in order have a peace with him and even after having a peace agreement Siddis did not show any intention to leave port of Bombay and continued to harass locals. That's when a young Parsi came forward and formed a militia comprised of local Hindu Bhandari/Agri/Koli men who started to thrash Siddis and kicked them out of the Bombay. If you know Marathi then search for "गोष्ट मुंबईची: भाग ७९" in youtube to know the in depth information of this particular incident.

The description mentions that the fort survived attacks from British, French and Portuguese armies. But let me tell you, for a large part of their history the Siddis of Janjira were allied with Mughals, Bijapur, Portuguese and British against the new found maratha state. The most devastating attack on the fort was not launched by any foreign power but it was launched by the Second Maratha King Sambhaji (Son of Shivaji), Sambhaji was a masterful general who swiftly cut-off the supplies to the the fort and choked the siddis. He also attempted a ruse to capture the fort which was discovered and the Marathas inside the fort were killed by siddis. After a long and grueling siege where both sides inflicted heavy losses onto each other the siddis started to feel the pinch of low supplies and Sambhaji pushed on damaging the fort's walls and he also started to build a causeway to attack the fort straight away. Siddis were caught in a dire situation despite fighting bravely and they had realised that they would not be able hold the fort for long. However, the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb was well aware of the strategic and trade importance of Janjira and hence he hastily sent his general Hasan Ali Khan to attack the Maratha cities of Kalyan and Bhiwandi to alleviate the pressure on Siddis. The plan worked as Sambhaji could not afford losing the important cities of Kalyan and Bhiwandi, hence Sambhaji had to leave despite being able to see victory in his sight at Janjira. Sambhaji then proceeded to attack Hasan Ali Khan near Kalyan and defeated him, resulting in his retreat to Ahmadnagar. However, Aurangzeb was able to prevent Sambhaji from capturing Janjira as Sambhaji then had to focus on other important battlefronts against the Mughals. However, the blow dealt by Sambhaji to Siddis was so severe that they did not venture out against the Marathas in a serious conflict for about the next 16 years

Siddhi People were always the Pride of Ancient India. They made up High Ranks in the Marata Army. From Military Commanders to Naval Commanders to Personal Body Guards of Maratha Emperor - Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Who had a Muslim Siddhi Bodyguard. This was how much Marathas trusted the Siddhi Tribal Commnity.

The "unconquerable fort" is the same as " HMS Invincible" which was hit in the Falklands War. There are no such military targets that are invincible or unconquerable.

doubt it is unconquerable, just make no economic sense trying to dump that much resource taken it. it can't send help to the mainland or the mainland can send ship to resupply it without getting hit.

@@durgeshsss I don't know why you Indians are so imature when it comes to stuff like this are you 10 years old? Even if there is a underwater tunnel, it would not matter since you can ignore the fort anyway. Is it a cool Fort? Yes. Is this fort capable of stopping and zoning out invaders from taking the coast? Absolutely not. It doesn't have any geostrategic importance, the only guy who wanted to conquer this at all costs was the Marathas King Shivaji. If the British wanted it they could've sinked the island with their navy but is was not worth the ammo.

An engineering marvel indeed, but unconquered because nobody needed to, would have been easy for the worlds most powerful navy to blockade and starve them out, but easier to bypass it, conquer everything else until they had no choice but to sign a peace treaty…., wait thats about what happened 🤣
