INS Vikrant proudly serves in the Indian Navy as the nation's first domestically built aircraft carrier. This glorious vessel CLASS is positioned as the seventh largest among global carriers. INS Vikrant is expected to achieve full operational status by November 2023.
The ship is equipped with approximately 2,200 compartments, tailored to accommodate a crew of approximately 1,600 individuals, which includes dedicated cabins for women officers and sailors.
The carrier is capable of accommodating approximately 30 aircraft, encompassing a diverse mix of both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. This includes Russian-made MiG-29K fighters and Ka-31 airborne early-warning helicopters, alongside Indian-manufactured Dhruv utility helicopters and U.S.-produced MH-60R maritime helicopters. Notably, on February 6, 2023, the carrier achieved two successful arrested landings, involving MiG-29Ks and a HAL Tejas (Naval Variant).
Vikrant is equipped with a robust array of defense systems, including a 32-cell VLS (Vertical Launch System) for the Barak 8 Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM), enhancing its anti-aircraft capabilities.
Additionally, it features four Otobreda 76mm dual-purpose cannons and four AK-630 Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS) in place, providing rapid and effective defense against incoming threats.

India actually at max needs 7 aircraft carriers, 2/3 on either side of Arabian sea and Bay of bengal, 1 in the andaman & nicobar islands and 1 in maintenance. Considering INS Vikramaditya wont operate in the navy past 15 years from now, 1 is in construction right now named, INS Vishal and would be in service by 2030. By 2047 India should have at leastin total 5 carriers with 2 of them being supercarriers and nuclear powered.

Indian Navy is soon going to reorder another Vikrant Class carrier. And also they are designing a 3rd Super-carrier with 65000+ displacement and EMALS Technology called INS Vishal (means Huge) to replace the Russian origin INS Vikramaditya. The Indian Indus valley civilization had shipbuilding and ports which were used to trade with Mesopotamians and Egyptians. Then the Gupta Empire and Roman Empire trade thrived flooding Indian coffers with Roman gold in exchange for Indian silk and Wootz steel. The chola empire conquered a lot of southeast Asia with the use of their robust navy and finally great Maratha King Shivaji revived the Indian naval glory by establishing a navy that challenged Europeans in the Arabian sea. India has a rich shipbuilding and naval history. So this is just the start of a lethal Indian Navy.

@mingmuyiyang8615 6 ай бұрын
@@yashkumar3196 I hope Indians read carefully and experience with their hearts. The huge difference in the founding of China and India determines the biggest difference between India and China. Just look at the modern history of both countries and you will understand. India was colonized by Britain for more than 200 years. In 1947, Britain experienced World War II, with its strength greatly reduced and its position replaced by the United States. India took the opportunity to achieve independence through a "non violent and non cooperative" approach. In other words, India's independence has not experienced the test of blood and fire, so an independent country lacks cohesion and willpower, as well as a sense of national identity. Now let's talk about China. Since the British defeated the corrupt and incompetent Qing government in 1840, the Chinese people have been living in a state of deep suffering. Various disasters and wars followed one after another. At that time, China was very poor and backward, suffering various humiliations. Including the cession of Hong Kong and Macau, Taiwan becoming a Japanese colony, the Eight Nation Alliance burning the Old Summer Palace, and the subsequent comprehensive and brutal invasion of China by Japan. In 1931, Japan launched a full-scale invasion of China. From 1931 to 1945, the war lasted for 14 years. The Chinese military and civilians rose up to resist, fought in bloody battles for fourteen years, and suffered 30 million casualties, ultimately achieving victory. Do you know why there are so many casualties in China? There are hundreds of reasons, and I will only give an example to illustrate one of them: Chinese troops are in conflict with the Japanese army. Often, if the number of Chinese soldiers participating in the war is 100, they only have 20 to 30 firearms. The remaining soldiers did not give up resistance or surrender. They bravely fought against the Japanese machine guns and cannons with machetes, steel forks, and wooden sticks until they sacrificed. This spirit of returning to death and never retreating is the Chinese spirit. 30 million casualties! Do you think this can happen in India? For India, it is zero casualties because India's knees are soft. India will soon give up resistance. Do you know why there was the "Nanjing Massacre"? Because of the desperate resistance of the Chinese military and civilians, they will never surrender or give up. After Japan broke through Nanjing, it was first to vent its anger and secondly to scare off other Chinese soldiers and civilians who were resisting. However, the "Nanjing Massacre" not only did not deter any Chinese people, but also further stirred up the resistance of the Chinese people. The establishment of New China has gone through the test of blood and fire. Do you know why the Chinese national flag is red? That's because the establishment of New China was bought with the blood of countless Chinese ancestors, and we Chinese people will always remember it. From 1945 to 1949, during the Chinese Civil War, the Kuomintang fled to Taiwan. Originally, the Chinese people thought they could live a peaceful life they had long longed for, but in 1950, the Korean War broke out, lasting three years. The Chinese Volunteer Army successfully resisted the US northward route without air or sea control, outdated military equipment, and extremely poor logistics, at the cost of losing hundreds of thousands of brave PLA soldiers. As for the 1962 Sino Indian War, which India never forgets and feels extremely humiliated, in the eyes of us Chinese, it was not a war at all. Firstly, it only took 32 days. Secondly, from 1959 to 1961, China experienced the most difficult three years after its founding, during which many people starved to death. In 1962, India's economy far surpassed that of China. The United States, Soviet Union, and Britain both support India. At that time, India implemented a "forward policy" and used elite troops to attack China. We Chinese people really don't want to go to war. The Chinese troops who joined the war with India in 1962 were ordinary border defense forces, not regular People's Liberation Army. In China, military personnel are known as the "cutest people". There is a Chinese proverb: without a country, there is no home, and military personnel are the backbone of the country. Thank you to our brave soldiers of the People's Liberation Army who are always ready to defend the border of our motherland. No matter how India develops its military, it cannot surpass China. Whether in the past, present, or future, China can always defeat India. This is determined by the history and culture of both countries. Chinese people value the spirit of dedication and sacrifice. Do not surrender, do not yield, resist to the death, and face death as if returning on the battlefield. If Chinese soldiers surrender on the battlefield, it is a great shame, and the spirit of dying rather than yielding is deeply engraved in the bones of every Chinese person. These are all things that Indians do not possess. So, even now or in the future, India will never be able to defeat China. Now, do you think India can stand tall in the world like China? Absolutely impossible.

Putting all those VLS tubes on a carrier is a waste of resources, compromises space on the ship, and is less effective at protecting the carrier. There is a reason the American and Chinese carriers carry zero missiles. Instead they carry and launch AEW aircraft, which will search out possible threats, and then all your escort guided missile frigate/destroyer/cruisers will use THEIR missiles to destroy the threat long before it gets close to the carrier itself. The carrier just needs the best CIWS system available as a last line of defense against a stray missile that might get through. Instead the Vikrant is carrying its OWN air defense missiles, has a near obsolete CIWS setup, and on top of that, which ever foreign company that manufactured the cannon managed to con the Indian navy into installing them onto the carrier as well. GUNS???? What are you supposed to do with guns on an aircraft carrier in this modern age. Even WWII era carriers didn't sport cannons!

@@Sinner85 US and Chinese carriers do not use VLS medium range missiles, because that's what their destroyer escorts are for. What they DO USE are two things: short range anti-air missiles (such as the ESSM) in trainable HORIZONTAL launchers suited for close in defense, as well as the highest quality CIWS they have, as last line of defense against any supersonic missiles that have gotten through all other layers of defense. What does the Vikrant carry? 1. 32 cell VLS which either carry Barak 8 for medium range air defense (which the destroyers should be doing from far away) or Barak 1 short range air defense. Except vertically launched short range air defense will not give you good enough reaction time compared with trainable launcher like the US and Chinese use. 2. 4 AK-630 CIWS units, which are some of the most antiquated CIWS systems in the world, and is considered only adequate to defend against subsonic threats. India does not make its own CIWS AFAIK. 3. Most bizarrely, 4 OTO Melara 76 mm guns. Essentially a 76 mm flak cannon, and it is even worse than the AK-630 and won't be able to intercept any type of modern anti-ship missile, but the Italian consultants hired by the Indian Navy somehow conned them into buying FOUR of these babies for their brand new aircraft carrier!

@ion8264
@ion8264 6 ай бұрын
what is that?
@death_parade
@death_parade 6 ай бұрын
@@ion8264 What is Cooperative Engagement Capability? Alright, say that you have one Indian frigate acting as a screen 30 km out on the flank from the main Indian aircraft carrier fleet that has a couple of destroyers escorting a carrier and a support ship. And this frigate screen detects an incoming threat of around a 100 anti-ship missiles that pop up on the radar due to their hi-hi-lo flight profile, hurtling towards the main carrier fleet. Now the frigate alone can hope to intercept at max 32 anti-ship missiles before they get in range of the carrier fleet and when they get close to the carrier, interception would become much more difficult because by then the anti-ship missiles will start flying a sea-skimming profile, making it harder for the S-band radars to detect until they are very close. Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) allows this one frigate to intercept all 100 anti-ship missiles before they get close to the carrier. How? Because it slaves the VLS in the both the destroyers and the carrier to the frigate's combat management system. So when the frigate detects the incoming 100 anti-ship missiles, it fires all of its own SAM missiles as well as half the missiles of the main fleet at the incoming threat. Without CEC, the main fleet would have to wait for the threat to appear on its own radars before being able to fire its own missiles by which time it'd be too late. If it was a Royal Navy carrier fleet instead, it would be toast because Royal Navy doesn't have CEC yet. @@rohitb5834 You will be having half or even less of the capabilities of a CATOBAR carrier. Frankly the distance it not so massive you need a carrier on both sides at all times. 1 Carrier being able to strike twice as many targets and put up its own EWACs and refueling aircraft is massive to help India control the Straights of Malacca which is the biggest strategical objective in the region. Will India have the planes, trained crew, and support vessels do man 2 or even 3 carrier strike groups in any short order.
@rohitb5834

@@n3v3rforgott3n9 Distance isnt massive? The distance is 2100 nm , or a 5-day sailing period from the Eastern to the Western seaboard or Vica versa. 5 days is a lot in war. India does not need a Carrier to control the Straits of Malacca. It has the Andaman and Nicobar Islands right at the entrance of the Malaccan strait. Having islands there with military bases and large airfields act like an "unsinkable aircraft carrier". India can completely block the straits there within a matter of hours if the need be, even today. I think the area where India needs it Carrier fleet is the Sunda Strait, between Java and Sumatra, lower down the world map. Thats another Strait where the Chinese fleet can enter the IOR. India will need a whole massive Carrier Battle Group there to block that strait in case of a war. Yes, India will have the planes, trained crew and support vessels for 3 Carrier Battle Groups by the early 2030s when the 3rd carrier enters service. Right now, it has 2 active Carrier Battle Groups. And i agree with the CATOBAR benefits, but before venturing into that, India needs to quickly cover its basic interests in the near future.

I think India may be planning to move straight to vertical take off and landing aircraft which will not require the catapult system at all. My understanding is that Rafale-M have recently been decided for the carriers. I don’t think India plans on following/copying American equipment. I think India is now looking few steps ahead and/or fully ingenious defence equipment. We would have to if we don’t want to be CONSTANTLY trailing behind other powers and if we want to break the cycle. Also, American and Chinese are invading/offensive forces while India is a defensive force. The requirements are not the same and frankly neither is the budget.

The reason India is not a global superpower is because India does not project it's military power in other areas of the world, INS Vikrant is diesel powered and can not operate far from refuelling port or friendly ports hence India only uses it in the Indian ocean near to home port. However, India does not create nuclear aircraft carriers as it has no interest in taking it's military power far from home. India still remains a nation that has never attacked or invaded another country and has always defended itself during war.

India's Aircraft Carriers, Destroyers, Frigates has operational ranges of 8000 kms - 10,000 kms + and can sail for 45 days+, India has 4 large replenishment ships that can double the range and endurance as well as overseas ports for refueling. However with the China and Pakistan threat, 70% of the fleet has to remain in the Indian Ocean Region. Remember the carrier doesn't have a catapult and is pretty small too in standards vs what actually should've been considering India has been operating carriers since 1960s, too bad the governments since then kept sleeping until now. The chinese only started on carriers 10 years ago and currently they've left India far behind in the race even though their carriers suck as well, We had the experience in carrier warfare and still they're gaining pace on us. We should move ahead of freebies and instead invest way more infrastructure and manufacturing, until we start churning out infrastructure like a big mass production factory, india isn't gonna grow at all, Chinese did exactly that since they're in a disguised Dictatorship under Communism, why we're still fixated at mere communal politics and freebies which would've been better invested even on shipbuilding which would've increased exports and strengthened naval defence sector for example. Plus the people themselves here are very greedy, the moment these freebies are removed they'll go on to protests, honestly a dictatorship would serve these people better since they all are greedy dickheads and would eat out of someone else until they die instead of doing work themselves.

1 - No catapult (has a ski jump that cheap and technologically backward carriers use) 2 - No decent aircraft for the carrier (MIG-29s are literally one of the worst aircraft in the world) 3 - Not nuclear powered 4 - Zero supporting infrastructure around it (supply tankers, support ships) 5 - India has been operating aircraft carriers since the 1960s (I remember reading about the original Vikrant being inducted into the navy 52 years ago) 6 - Meanwhile China just started operating aircraft carriers 10 years ago and has left India waaaaaaaaaaaaay behind. *Stop patting yourselves on the back, roll up your sleeves and actually compete with China!*
