June 03,2013 at 1900 hrs. I liked the documentary, but as an ex sailor who served on the first INS Vikrant, the commentary states that INS Vikrant became a maritime museum,which is incorrect. It broke my heart when INS vikrant was broken up, and aold as scrap in Mumbai. Jai Hind

With $melly $tinky Indians $hitting all over the ship, the whole ship became a high level bio hazard threat to any living being therefore the ship has to be demolished, destroyed and reduced to untouched and inaccessible scrap and kept in a complete isolated state of existence to protect the future of human race.

Nicely researched video. About the third carrier though, its likely that the plans for a 65,000 ton heavy carrier have been moved to next decade. Current plans seem to be building a sister ship of INS Vikrant. That way it can be built quickly and at lesser cost. Funds are also needed to fund 11 other classes of warships and 5 other submarine classes all being built or designed in India right now. As it is Indian Navy gets the smallest share of the Indian military budget as the lion's share goes to the Army and Air Force (because primary concern is China and Pakistan just across the border from us). So funds for a 65,000 ton Vishal class carrier will only be available in next decade.
@oadka
@oadka Жыл бұрын
Yes! I was going to post this as well. The Indian navy has decided to go for a repeat order of the Vikrant (sister ship) And due to the experience gained, it can be completed in 8 years with minimal budget overruns. Vishal will come after that.

The third aircraft carrier IAC 2 have been confirmed by the indian navy. It will likely be a sister ship of IAC 1 but with a larger body, increase fire power, flat top deck, and a EMALS Catobar system. It may be around 50,000-60,000 tone catagory.

@@roshanjohnson7467 its not confirmed for stobar. US and india are currently working on development of indigenous EMALS CATOBAR, and also the budget set for the second carrier is around 5 billion dollars, and out of that 5 billion, around 1 billion will be used on the EMALS CATOBAR system. Even if they change there plan, then also its garunteed that it will have a flat deck, hence it will have a CATOBAR system. Also it wont be just an upgraded version, even though it will be a sister ship, the displacement will be larger than INS Vikrant (around 55000-60000 ton), with more indigenousness contents, more firepower, more space for fighters and even better systems.

It's a really solid starter carrier for the Indian Navy. Pros = * Domestic made (so India now has production capability to make new ships and a pool of skilled engineers) * Cost effective ramp * Two carriers offers far, far more operational capability. Can rotate ships in and out of an area for sustained fighting, divert a ship to handle threats etc. * Decent size, comparable to anything Russia and France currently have. Cons = * 45,000 tons will get tossed around in harsh sea conditions, limiting operation capability. US carriers are twice as heavy and don't feel the waves as much. * Crew training will suffer given both carriers are mismatched by design. * No unlimited range, meaning logistics will be harder * limited sortie and payload capacity without a catapult system
@vinter19
@vinter19 5 ай бұрын
Nice analysis. But the INS Vikrant has been precisely built to meet the specific geostrategic requirements and threat perceptions of India. So, most of the cons you had mentioned are redundant. Unlike US carriers, Indian ones are not meant for Global deployment and may not be required to operate too deep into the Indian ocean region. Plus, the IN has been operating carriers continuously since the 1960s and have successfully used them in wars. Hence they pretty well know what they need and how to use them effectively. Cheers! ✌️

Only thing which both Indian carrier group lack as compared to American Navy is nuclear powered carrier and size also to some extent. But It has a enough range for Indian ocean, and well defended with Barak 8 and it has a complete carrier strike group with destroyers (with Brahmos), frigates also each have a nuclear capable Arihant class submarine that can deliver a nuclear warhead along with conventional submarines. China should be careful in Indian Ocean specially Strait of Malacca. Chinese govt. can't survive without Trade that's the route. Afterall, India is only country that has an Ocean name before/after it's own name thanks to Indian Subcontinent. So it must control it.

Anyone who understands microwave tech knows stealth doesn't work for large objects and that too traveling at such low speeds. Also, SONAR will easily detect it. Plus, aircraft carriers never travel alone. It's always part of a fleet of 10-20 smaller attack ships. So even if stealth really works for large sea objects, there's no point to it since the whole fleet cannot escape radar and sonar. Just because the government says something, it doesn't automatically become true. Critical thinkers can see propaganda a mile away.

Can someone in the chat please explain why Aircraft Carriers don't combine ski jump with catapult or EMALS? as from my understanding the ski jump allows more lift due to angle, down side being limitations with MTOW on takeoff. But using EMALS you could have a shorter launch on a ski jump? correct. I'm sure I am completely wrong in my assumptions as it would have been done if it was so beneficial. But would love to know why it wouldn't work. Thank you Horizon for such an amazing video, I am constantly impressed with India's development and how quickly they establish home grown manufacturing for highly complex systems.

By the way, interesting idea. I admit that it is simply too difficult to implement and the benefits will be modest. In addition, takeoff weight restrictions will remain, heavier aircraft cannot be launched
@jake7824
@jake7824 Жыл бұрын
EMALS and Steam catapults are always better than ski-jumps as you want to maximise your MTOW for longer sorties & weapon loads, it also allows heavier aircraft to be launched such as AWACS which increase the carriers capability by orders of magnitude. Skijumps are used A: because the country uses them lacks the technology for EMALS (it's still fairly early-ish tech for China and USA) B: the ship class Vikrant originates from was a Russian "Aircraft carrying cruiser" with a heavy Anti Ship missile compliment that took up a a lot of space C: it's a hell of a lot cheaper.

I guess when aircraft reaches the ski jump with that much force of catapult the landing gear may get damaged, I'm not an expert so take it with a pinch of salt
@kingdedede1066

Its really impossible to have a catapult going up a curve and would be difficult for the aircraft to detatch from the rail if it stopped just short of the ramp. It would also place an ENORMOUS amount of stress on the gear to be flung by a catapult and then squashed as it goes up a curved surface. Hope this answers your question.

Its has to be understood that india is a democracy and it has a large water region to cover with the growing threat from Chinese Navy. Hence india needs to be having atleast 3 carriers in the ocean to counter any threats that harms freedom of navigation and rules based international order in the indian ocean. Also the fact that these are not shared by countries like US , France ,UK or even Russians to india. This caused much delay for india to develop their own indigenous carrier and battle group but now as they have delivered one class carrier they need to keep making more and bigger and nastier ships. Go India 🇮🇳 ❤

Size is only one factor. The Chinese Navy has now surpassed the size of the US Navy but does it have the effectiveness to prevail in battle? India is a free democracy and in my opinion, would do better both economically and militarily to align itself closer to the west.

You dont build a near $3 Billion ship to just "gain experience". It is a very capable weapons platform and will be potent for the next few decades in controlling IOR in conjuction with its CBG and according to Indian Navy's doctrine. You are right in it is not the best but is overkill for PN and more than a very good deterrent for any misadventures by PLAN. Also the soft power an aircraft carrier has is immense

@@babiswaster7047 what exactly makes type 003 "obsolete" and what is "not-obsolete"? Indian navy will not have anything like type 003 for several years in the future. And by that time, chinese navy will have a true Ford-class equivalent: 100,000 ton, CATOBAR design with EM catapult, domestically designed and built 5th gen aircrafts, nuclear reactors, possibly directed energy weapons,...... And possibly several of them. Its not even a comparison.
