More than 40 per cent of India's 61 million children are malnourished, prompting the prime minister to declare the problem a "national shame".
A recent report reveals that levels are twice that of sub-Saharan Africa, making every third malnourished child in the world an Indian.
India has one of the fastest-growing economies in the world and runs one of the largest child feeding programmes.
But critics say only a fraction of aid reaches the needy.

Being an Indian I don't blame government for this poverty rate but with the society. Overpopulation and lack of birth control lead to the rise of poverty. Government is given us lot of programmes, projects and schemes and they are trying their best to this improve social problems. Though illiteracy, early marriage, massive migrations from rural to urban, casteism, and lack of knowledge of social problems etc create hurdles to the government.

It's a common misconception that these poor people give birth to provide them any future support. The truth is that India is a patriarchal society, a lot of them keep on having kids until they get a baby boy. Another major reason for so many kids is that there is a big stigma for Birth control measures like contraceptives, pills, etc...If women here are even shy of showing their faces to men how can we expect them to ask for contraceptives? Moreover these are poor people they too understand that its hard to look after so many kids but they don't have any other choice under prevailing conditions. They can neither afford medical services related to pregnancy nor can they avoid a natural human instinct. It's all fault of Govt and not of these innocent people.

If you look at history, people start having fewer babies when they get wealthier and life gets easier. The Chinese Gov't implemented the one-child policy but experts say that birth rate was already ddropping as the crazy things in the 60s and 70s (great leap forward and cultural revolution) came to an end and life got better. Today, many Chinese don't even want to have a second kid even if they are allowed to and they have at least one kid becuase Chinese care a lot about having a descendant. My point is, birth control is not the solution.

After travelling in India for 4 months, I came to realise that although the people are generally warm, there is deceit and desperation lurking at every corner. That shop keeper and district collector were good examples of how people there just lacked a common decency to be kind to one another. India is a hard place to live, even harder to live well. I hope this issue has gained some traction in 2017.

I agree with you but their is no education on this. None of these kids go to school so if they survive past puberty they will have a bunch of children themselves. Men in India usually get abusive if a woman insists on using protection and it should be free as well which it is not. Ideally they need outreach for these remote villages and then FREE birth control.

What needs to be done in countries struggling with hunger and poverty is limit the amount of children being born. Each woman should have a tubal ligation after the birth of her second child. Food donations aren't the answer that's like putting a band aid on a broken leg.

I respectfully disagree. Overpopulation is not the issue. Notice that he (the narrator) stated that in the bustling cities there's a surplus of food and wealth. Many children go hungry in the US yet we waste nearly half of our food. In many cases, overpopulation is not the core issue ( high population in poor areas is an issue; but I am aware that the combined factors (poor economy along with overpopulation) exacerbates both individual issue. It's not a matter of there being a shortage of food or resources; it's a matter of the wealthy and elite not be willing to help their fellow country men. Recall that they mentioned that there is a lot of corruption in the government. This corruption causes many to suffer and languish in poverty. So as you can see by the points I have mentioned, overpopulation is not the core issue, it's greed.

I do understand that corporations build nations: by creating employment, which in turn increases the quality and standards of life; they provide money to the government through taxation, which the government can then use to build the nation's infrastructure and provide social benefits to the masses. I also understand the nature of business: profit and grow above all else. What worries me is that the nature of business and the human nature are opposite (granted not in all ways) of one another. Human's bottom-line is (typically) their loved ones, while business bottom-line is profit. People can invest in someone without seeking a reward for their time and effort; businesses don't operate on this sort of principle. What we are realizing in this age is that we must learn to play a harmonious tune with the strings of our hearts and our purse strings. We must allow innovation and great ideas to take shape and form. But we can't afford to silence our hearts and we must not destroy our planet for the sake of a few men and women gaining extreme amounts of wealth.

Christopher Swayzer There have been campaigns in Australia and the UK to pressure governments to collect taxes from entities like Google. Tax havens are their thing. The Panama papers leak being a recent example. The comment of natividad has to do with the great number of street kids as a result of poverty and not being able to take care of many children. I agree with him that it is prudent to have small families if circumstances make it difficult to look after children well. Civil societies are making governments accountable to redistribute wealth, but it's not going to happen overnight. That's what's happening in my country, the Philippines. The government is making sure free contraceptives are available for the poor, and the government of duterte has expanded considerably the budget for social welfare.

There still would be problems. Telling people how many children they are allowed to have, is fundamentally wrong. That is a mother's decision. Abortion is wrong too, any unborn child is still a child. Don't want kids, don't get pregnant. Period.

It’s not like in the West….where easy and even financially better to have no kids, if you have no kids in the poorest parts of India, at 45 or so when you physically break down from the lifelong physical work…you now have little to no options to support yourself in retirement or if disabled. And even while young, you need the older kids to help with never-ending chores or if you get sick: to work the subsistence farm, get water, wash the laundry by hand, etc. In general…no one else is coming to help you but your family…it isn’t like the West where there are many safety net programs and poverty means being more likely to be overweight…..here people can starve, go blind from malnutrition, etc. And these are people who were likely malnourished themselves as kids, who have astonishing little beyond a few pots and the clothes on their back, and having children is one of the few things they aspire to or have hope for. And the kids don’t have any say where or whether they are born, but pay the price. That certainly isn’t in all of India…just parts and it’s huge, And the sad fact is that India HAS enough food and funds, and could fix it with just a free school breakfast and lunch programs, but in many areas it is just corrupted and miss-managed into near nothing, and the bureaucracyis very entrenched and outdated.

This is so sad and it absolutely breaks my heart to see this. I live in USA ,and while we do have poor people here as well, It's not quite like this at all from what I've seen. People here don't realize just how fortunate and lucky they are to live here. My heart goes out to all of these people. I wish I was rich...cause I would do as much as I could to help people in need. and it just makes me think of all of the millionaires and billionaires on this earth....I wonder how many of them bother to actually try to help poor starving people around them?
