Social distancing and good hygiene are essential weapons in the fight against COVID-19.
But how can you maintain social distancing in one of the world's largest slums? How can you wash your hands regularly when there is no running water? And what happens when millions of people who survive on meagre wages are suddenly without work and struggling to feed themselves?
In India, 1.3 billion people were confined to their homes with just four hours' notice as the country embarked on the world's biggest lockdown.
Tens of millions of migrant workers suddenly found themselves jobless, quickly running out of money and food, and unable to return to their villages across India.
Ibrahim Mohammed worked as a rickshaw puller in New Delhi, but now he cannot leave the slum where he lives with his wife and four children.
"Ever since the lockdown was announced, we are dying of hunger," he says. "Now they say there is a sickness in the air. We may get sick, but before that, we will die of hunger."
Construction worker, Bhikhari Yadav, says he can no longer send money home to his wife and children in the eastern state of Bihar. He says migrant workers feel abandoned.
"We have made this country the way it is," he says. "But right now, the poor man is being kicked in the stomach."

Taking responsibility IS going into lockdown.. As previous commenter said, what other choice would he have? As soon as he announced lockdown, people started trying to migrate back to villages - probably taking COVID with them and spreading it all over. This documentary showed it perfectly. They are uneducated and because of that, living in poverty. They don't know any better. They need educated people to make the tough decisions for them. They are lucky to be getting any support from the government at all to be honest.. Living in poverty and willingly having 4+ children is incredibly irresponsible and completely unfair to those children. India seriously needs to implement some population control measures or this problem will only continue to accelerate. Socialism doesn't work, especially when majority of the population lives in poverty and isn't able to contribute to society in a time like this. Survival of the fittest.

Poor people in India look more poor than poor people in Pakistan, washing hands with clay. Rich and middle class in India may be better off than Pakistan but their poors are in worse condition than poors in Pakistan. Both countries should end the war hysteria and work on elevating the poverty

the situation has actually gotten bad.the problem is even if lockdown has been eased still many wud not get jobs,mostly middleclass is working from home,so basically no jobs for rickshaw pullers,taxis ,auto drivers....people working in restaurants,or running food stalls have lost works because nobody is going there.

India has a huge economic inequality. A great chunk of the population lives under the poverty line who can't afford basics like healthcare and food. There are people driving supercars in Delhi through their black money and yet the poor are neglected and left to die on streets. Really sad.
