He's always been a burden to the test team. You won't believe the preference shown to him has been so severe that to accommodate him, they displaced Pujara from his No. 3 position on the Sri Lanka tour in 2015, even got him dropped on a few occasions (like South Africa tour in 2018). Rohit also replaced Rahane at times. I think it was South Africa tour 2018 and before that Sri Lanka tour of India 2017-18. At other times, they would upset the team balance to play Sharma at No. 6 (South Africa tour of India 2019). Sharma failed repeatedly in overseas conditions between 2013-19 yet he somehow was always picked whenever there was an opportunity to pick him. His test career is largely a creation of the selectors' preference for him.
