I own 2 Harley's, and all I can say is thank you Indian for pushing the envelope. HD needs to take note on a performance bagger. I love to customize and HD has the aftermarket for sure, but the Indian is ready to go out of the box. Nice review, I need to test ride that Challenger, looks like an awesome bike!

I have been riding Motorcycles for 45 years 37 on Harley. My current bike is a 2003 road-glide. I have had it 18 years its on its third engine. the most resent is a 103 with heads cams larger throttle body S&S headers fulsac loaded CVO mufflers. Dynojet power vision tuner. 101 HP and 107 Torque. I take a lot of trips never haul my bikes I ride them everywhere. Indian Sold me on the Challenger. As much as I love my road-glide and all my performance changes and suspension upgrades. This bike out performs Harley in every way even the infotainment. Harley is not taking care of the long term loyal riders my dealership here in Albuquerque is terrible. I tried to buy a used CVO which had an advertised price of $20,500 Which when I rode it they upped the price to 22,500. They offered $6,500 for my current bike even knowing they charged my $8,500 for the motor work that was being done at that time. Here is the math they used: $22,500 - 6,500 = 18,000. Remember the math is off and the price upped by $2,000 which changed the final price by $4,000. That meant they were only Giving me $2,000 for my trade in and he asked me if I was ready to do the deal. I asked him knowing that I work at a Defense Lab and Have 2 Degrees. Did he realer think I was stupid? I walked out. Thank you Indian for stepping up. I will be your next customer in the spring.

I know this is an older video as far as the bike world goes. I picked up my challenger from Panama City beach Florida and rode home to NJ in sun and rain with my wife on the bike both of us were so comfortable that 2 days later we rode up to bar harbor Maine so comfort on long distance rides is definitely not an issue. 2 years later I got my pursuit. The fairing issues are gone the idle issue also gone and the tech is so much better! On a 950lb bike I’m doing wheelies without any effort or popping the clutch. I’ve been giggling like a damn school girl since I got on this 108 engine.

The Challenger actually has a 65.7 in. wheel base and 98.5 in. overall length. The Road Glide Special wheel base is 64 in. and overall length is 95.7 in. So although the Challenger felt smaller to you on your test ride, it is actually bigger than a Road Glide. The rattle in the fairing was probably the key fob in the cubby. That is where they put them for demo rides.

Rode my Challenger to the Black Hills (over 1000 miles) w/o stopping. I was so comfortable I never needed to stop. It’s made for the open road and it’s still a blast to play in twisties. For me it’s the best of both worlds. Haven’t heard any rattling yet after 3600 miles.

I think there definitely is a market segment that does want a performance bagger. I don't see an issue with having a big, heavy touring bike that can also carve through the twisties (as well as an 850lb bike can, anyway). So I guess I disagree with your idea that this bike doesn't really fit in anywhere. How many guys do you know that put aftermarket cams and/or big bore kits in their touring bikes? The answer is, I'm sure...a lot. They want more power from their big, heavy bike. Heck, Harley even makes a 131" kit that can ONLY be added to their touring line. So yes, there is a market for a bike of this kind. Indian sees that and has added the brakes and inverted forks to go along with the added power.

You are correct, the #1 selling bike in the US, for all mfgs, every year for the past 10 is a Harley Street or Road Glide by far. They sell more stage upgrade kits for their Touring line than any other. Performance bagger is the 2nd quickest growing US market behind ADV. When you can tour comfy on something for 2 weeks that has power & still has a soul, hard to beat. Smart move by Indian, go after HD’s top seller but quicker, no need to spend the extra $4K on the SE upgrades

You are spot on - I purchased a blue limited and my only problem is the poor quality of the paint - no rattles anywhere. My 2014 Ultra Limited paint is better than the Challenger paint after about 200 miles of riding. H-D simply beats the Indian in finish quality hands down, but the Indian Challenger performance is 2nd to none. It will be interesting to see when the performance fall-off happens, if at all.

I bought this bike a few weeks ago in the middle of touring. Put 3000 miles plus on it in a week and a 1/2. 10 out of 10 would tour on across country. When everyone was done at the end of the day and wanted to sleep, I wanted to get back on the bike and continue riding. The challenger is such a fun bike to ride! The only gripes I have happened to be the exact same ones that you mentioned and my bike is a 2021. I've definitely made it a mission to figure out exactly what is rattling in the ferry and come up with a fix for, because it is definitely a problem that should be addressed, before it leaves the factory, for a motorcycle that costs as much as the Indian challenger does.

Noting this is a 3 year old video and owning a '22 Challenger, I'll say the throttle / misfire issues have been addressed through ECU flashes. Yes, the Challenger is more nimble than the HD RG - I've ridden both. The biggest difference isn't in the "specs" (both having almost identical dimensions) but in the feel and weight distribution. The RG feels very top-heavy where the Indian carries its weight much lower. The suspension is night and day different, as is the power delivery, both in Indian's favor. The liquid cooled Power Plus 108 revs much higher, but lower RPM numbers aren't much different. Grateful for HD and Indian both competing for the same market share - pushes both manufacturers to give us better products.

Indian dealerships always look pretty empty to me. After shutting down Victory the way the did how can you say they won’t do the same to Indian? If the dealers aren’t making money they will close the doors. I am not by any means putting Indian bikes down but Polaris I think made a mistake in killing Victory. Why didn’t they put all the effort into updating that original brand? The Scout and the Challenger are basically Victory’s.
@gabrielcocco5188
@gabrielcocco5188 3 жыл бұрын
@@harleycamper5577 Polaris was targeting the Harley Davidson consumers when they launched the Victory line. After 18 years they made well engineered motorcycles but sales lacked, *(to the point of losing money consistently). Polaris purchases the Indian Motorcycle name as a marquee brand that would be respected by the HD customer. *(Way back when Indian consistantly beat HD on tracks and were pioneers in motorcycle innovations). Polaris/Indian was smart to make its first introduction using the Thunderstroke 111 with its retro design in a modern air cooled engine. What you're seeing now is Polaris combining the Victory engineering DNA under the Indian heritage branding. Sales have steadily increased. My opinion, this wouldn't have happened as easily under the Victory branding. Also, it doesn't make sense for Polaris to have both Victory & Indian competing for the same consumer segment. That is why the decision was made to axe the Victory line. Polaris is a diversified powersports conglomerate, similar to Honda, Kawasaki. They aren't going to end Indian Motorcycles and have deep pockets to absorb potential losses through their multifaceted product segments.

I hear folks blipping multiple times before each downshift while approaching a red light (WTF is that about??) or my favorite ...sitting at that light and cracking the pipes for attention. Nowadays, I refuse to ride behind anyone with pipes ...it's just annoying. Still, your assessment of the Challenger is spot on. I've test rode Indians and regardless of model, the dashboard seems too far for me. Appearance is personal taste, so if you enjoy the shark nose fairing of your RG, that's cool, as I personally think it looks better too, but the Indian's liquid cooled 108 PowerPlus is no match for the M8 107. If I were in the market for a fixed fairing bagger, I'd get the Indian just for the motor, but a fixed fairing is the only thing these two bikes have in common. FYI for anyone not familiar, throttle blipping is a racing technique where the rider quickly raises the revs while downshifting for a turn to maintain power to the rear wheel. I ride lots of mountain twisties and I focus on my trail braking skills to quickly get through corners. Ride safe all. 😎

I sat on one a few days ago. Felt ok but like you said it feels weird having the fairing so far away. Makes me wonder if the wind protection is any good on it. I'm at the age where I'm done getting beat on by the wind to look cool . I actually went over and sat on a new 2020 Goldwing and liked it better 😅 I do think this engine is where American bikes should be going instead of getting bigger and bigger. They have gotten bigger for years with no great power increase. Yet Indian brings us a smaller engine that will smoke them all Here's my main concern. I've never had a Polaris that was worth a damn. Constant trouble from their ATVs. I HOPE that hasn't been a issue with their bikes. But my mind is open about it rather than closed

Great review. I finally went to go take a look at the Challenger and can echo everything you said. But in the end, I walked away feeling great ride, but missing something. 1. Build quality: Lots of plastic. From the saddle everything I saw was plastic. That's not necessarily a bad thing but I wasn't happy when squeezing the left handgrip made the controls flex and move. Faring seams inconsistent, handlebar control housings all plastic. And faring rattles on a bike with 6 miles on the clock. 2. The only way to get gloss paint is to get the Limited. 3. Very few customization options from Indian. I like making my bikes my own. 4. Would need extended handlebars... my arms were locked unless I bent forward. 5. Entertainment system was very slow and hard to read in the sunlight. So while I like the feeling after riding the Challenger, I'm afraid I'll be disappointed long term.

Absolutely not a good first bike. It's big and heavy. It can throw you faster than you know what's happening and you'll walk away (if you're lucky) and never ride again. If you want a bagger, look into Yamaha and Honda that can be outfitted with bags and a windshield. Something light with a lower center of gravity would be best for a beginner.

Indian uses a learning computer to tune these bikes. They try to dial into the individual owner and take several hundred miles to dial in. If they need to purge data, they do it by killing the engine. You can usually tell if they are looking for better data, they will have a rough idle. Once the ECM dials the tune to the rider they bikes are very smooth. Demo bikes may not have any miles on them and may have a hard time dialing in with all the different riders.

The Challenger is a performance bagger. The Road Glide is a standard bagger touring bike. Other than having a fixed fairing and saddle bags, the mechanical composition of these two are vastly different. The Challenger is fully liquid cooled, has a modern mono-shock rear, inverted front forks, better brakes, and many other improvements. The Road Glide on the other hand is just a standard v-twin bagger. To add the performance upgrades the Indian has, you'd be spending thousands in the aftermarket.

I have ridden all the Indian models, with the exception of the Challenger, during certain motorcycle rallies and the quality is just not there. Some models look very clean and sharp but not worth the money they are asking. Like a Chinese knockoff version of a Harley. But hey, competition is a good thing. Let's see if both manufacturers up their game to benefit us consumers. But you have to think that there are many people out there that don't need a powerful bike, I got the Harley 128 Big Bore Kit installed recently and it's a lot of power. Keep your customers in good condition to keep riding. I think that's why Harley keeps the performance at a certain level coming from the factory and those who are experienced and want more power can do so.

Just negotiate a stage 2-3 in your purchase for a new Harley and it will be quicker. A simple aftermarket cam change on a 107 will make it quicker than the challenger.

But what about the better electronics, brakes, suspension, and frame? Can't swap all that over.

Focused Garage aren’t the brakes the same on both? Don’t the 2020 Road glide and challenger both have dual disc brembos front and rear? The fairing and frame felt smaller while sitting on the the challenger, so if that matter to you great. But looking at it from the side, it looks way bulkier. I thought the electronics were both pretty good on each. The challenger i rode had a weird like knocking noise which I guess is normal, my road glide has a lot of top end noise which is annoying.

They both have Brembos, but the Indian has radial mounted calipers with much larger rotors than the Harley. I think there are more pistons in the calipers also on the Indian. Regardless, they are both great bike. I also have a 2017 Road Glide, and it makes a good amount of sewing machine noises but nothing like older Harleys lol.

Well I doubt that, watched a challenger with a stage 1 kit consistently beat a stage 4 117 Harley & this is straight out of the box

Poor engineering... sound is not better then Harley... looks do not compare in anyway paint is no equal.... I can cruise 90 mph all day down the highway on my road glide I will give you this bike would probably beat a road glide in a race ... but you know I don’t remember the last time I raced on my motorcycle so that’s not really an issue ... the only thing that leaves is comfort so the only thing is if it’s more comfortable and that doesn’t overshadow all the other things that it comes in second with being design paint reliability style... because to be honest it’s butt ugly

@Steve Xaxa Challengers are poorly engineered, what are you talking about? The Challenger includes; lightweight cast aluminum frame, inverted front fork suspension, rear adjustable Fox hydraulic mono-shock suspension, better infotainment system which includes Apple Car Play / weather & traffic overlay, 100 watt clear stereo, Bosch lean angle sensors, dual radially mounted Brembo brakes, Metzeler Cruisetec tires, full LED lighting, and a powered windshield. You're comment reeks from ignorance. By your own admission the HD doesn't ride as smooth but the paint is nice.

@@gabrielcocco5188 Polaris is plagued with electric and or software problems even riding fish on KZbin who bought one had to haul his back to the dealership at 400 miles.. and he is not the only one.. Polaris paint sucks... if you want me to give you the ride might be a little better but Harley ride is not bad..the infotainment is not better if that’s your opinion that’s fine but I’ll disagree.. the only other thing is you can sit in your garage and play with the windshield going up and down... that’s a joke if your trying to say that makes it better

@Steve Xaxa You sound like one of those guys that if the gas tank doesn't read "Harley Davidson" then you'd find fault. I, along with many others are saying the Challenger is better! I agree the Challenger had first year production glitches. Most were VCM related. The PowerPlus 108 is a great engine with superior design. Don't believe me, check Kevin Cameron's article from Cycle World. Every American made bike has first run production/engineering/supply chain issues. That doesn't upset me. Not addressing those oversights, in a timely manner and passing repair cost the buyer upsets me. Has the M8 sumping issue been corrected? How's that stock suspension? Want LEDs, open your wallet. Want chrome front suspension?, sure we have that part, want to roll that into your financing? Regarding sound, I'm certain your current ride has Stage 1 and/or Stage 2. Do the same with a Challenger and hear that sound. Check RidingFish's Tab exhaust w/ Zombie baffles. *(too loud for me). By the way, have you seen how many miles RidingFish put on in a short time frame...? Have you seen the places he's traveled? Heard of any major issues? I understand these are not racing bikes. However, tell me what guy doesn't want more HP & Torque? As far as looks, that's subjective. I'm a Baby Boomer and I like the look. I never thought the front design was bulky. I like the single headlight with enclosed turn signal/daytime running LED's as standard equipment. The adjustable windshield is not gimmicky, it serves a function. Plus, I'm not a sheep, I like being different from the crowd. I also like to know I'm getting more for my hard earned money. Your focal point is paint. I could take a Stock Challenger, add Stage 1& 2, *(although cams aren't available...YET), and custom paint the bike and be Thousands of $ ahead of a person that adds Stage 4 to a RG. *(I'm not saying this is you. I'm saying what you get stock/standard doesn't compete. Plus, the engineer is far superior.

You forgot about the garbage aluminum frame maybe that's why she's rattling up in front with the cheap plastic up on top. Otherwise in that I agree with you on the bike. In my opinion aluminum is the worst thing for a motorcycle. Anybody who lives down south especially Florida knows the problem with aluminum it just pits and turns to powder doesn't even matter if it's chromed.

What about all the super sport bikes that have aluminum frames? What happens to those?
@dominickzappola2429
@dominickzappola2429 4 жыл бұрын
Most of the super bikes when they're done aren't worth anything. And as far as Honda goes Honda had a lot of problems with the aluminum frame. I talk from experience I literally have hundreds of thousands of miles under my belt at high speeds. Nothing better than a steel frame. I almost bought a Honda Goldwing a 2016. Once the dealership found out who I was they told me if I bought the bike they would not warranty it. And most of the stuff with Indian as far as the Challenger goes is garbage. I was actually at Indian today in Elkhart Indiana. They have a bike there that has 200,000 miles on it the bike is all beat the shit. Before the Challenger came out and hit the road I talked with Indian about taking a bike. Didn't want me on their bike for the fact that the type of riding I do points out all the defects. And the Indian that they have at the dealership with the 200,000 miles on it the man claims he won the Hoka Hey motorcycle challenge. He never even came close. And you also claims you wrote a hundred thousand miles in one year. But none of it is documented.
