India’s prime minister Nahrendra Modi and his BJP party are widely predicted to win next month’s general election.
But his second term in power has been marked by deepening religious polarisation and increasing islamophobia.
There are more than 200 million muslims in India, making up the country’s largest religious minority.
Following a wave of violence against India’s muslims, members of the community have told the BBC that they are living in fear and are being marginalised and suppressed.
Those claims are strongly denied by India’s Hindu nationalist government.

Muslims are not minority.. it is the 2nd largest religion. I come from a tribal culture with total religion size of around 300k (around 0.025%), i think that would be a minority. Hindus were only 3% in Pakistan in 1947. Rest of 20% were in East Pakistan which is Bangladesh now. Hindus were never persecuted in Pakistan as its shown in Indian media its fake news. I am not only a supporter of Partition (of India) but a champion and I consider it very essential. I find Savarkar's demand for an undivided nation (Akhand Bharat) with both Hindus and Muslims living together a very novice thinking. My only pre-condition is that every single Muslim must be moved to Pakistan and every single Hindu must be moved to India otherwise new nation will never be a stable nation which is an essential condition for progress and development. (BR Ambedkar in the book on Pakistan and Partition of India, written 7 years before actual partition. He remained supportive of this statement till the actual partition)

In India, you can find incidents of hindus mistreating muslims, you can also find incidents muslims mistreating hindus, you can also find hindus and muslims live together. So, don't cherry pick selective incidents, and please be aware of your own biases. One thing that I know for sure the tension between two communities is rising in India and it is a serious problem, though one can argue that situation was never better in the first place. Also don't forget that criticizing immoral views of islam is not islamophobia, though islamophobia is a real issue. Same applies to hindus also.

When you have had extra privileges to circumvent the law all your life, such as the triple talaq divorce which was horrible for women, being equalized under the law feels like oppression. India's making the right moves here as much as the west wants to say any powerful foreign nation is bad, most of all the colonial BBC which only reports incidents of Hindu violence but not Muslims beheading shopkeepers or any of the other side of that. The violence is bad but on both sides, and is a fraction of a percent of the plutocratic India at large. No mention of Christians being burned alive in Pakistan either. Minorities thrived in India since partition and were decimated in Pakistan.
